searching the pipeline

GREEN FLEURETTE

With a guttering cigarette-stub candelabra
planted on his tin pan rim
old Hobo H., yea verily him,
sets off, vagrant pilgrim, on his last hurrah.

& recalls that fond octagonal gazebo
where many a summer
found him (quizzical plumber)
searching the pipeline for Cy Manitou.

High & low, & up & down the river
led by that whistling flit
of Ray Caw-somuchwit (tight
Gansett smokehole, domed in Ravenna)

Hobo went on, a-glide like some water-bat
round that chartless labyrinth
amazed with gold, & crème
de menthe – a little green fleurette

upsprung ‘mid scattered fallen leaves
& spinning like a gyroscope
cross-threaded by Hope
so’s to balance what him heart conceives.

For that whisper-caw of Wakan Tanka
cries – all the temples of Solomon
& all the domes of Justinian
are but the models of a living Anchor,

planted ‘twixt the temples of your mind
beside the hearth-fire in your heart.
O speaking brook, where rivers start!
Handy RI aerie (in your eye to find).

SPIRAL HUT

Hobo moseys down his usual shore,
thinking of the finish line.
Plays with his river-sign,
his spiral hut of shoreline lore.

Someday there might be an algorithm
for the eyes in the mirror,
the project of the logosphere
curved beneath Beatrice-smile... leaf-skim

fluttering in Pentecostal glossolayea
round those pillars of Diana
stolen for Hagia Sophia
by Justinian (Solomon, I have outdone ye).

The builder’s signal of completion, the flag
of a little pine tree
planted like perfect akme
at the apex.  Unknown Soldier’s Rag

of worn linen.  Shakespeare’s cap
of happiness, he said,
that buried pot – not dead,
not even sleeping; where rays overlap

into a solid beam (centripetal matrix
of a million eyes).  It is
finished, this Poe-biz –
seraphic wayfaring Eureka-box

of pinecones, green acorns.  & the canoe
of flowering almond ribs...
your singing coracle of orbs,
suspended in accord from sapphire-blue.

On a ceiling in Verona

SPIDER-THREAD

Late winter gloom.  I’m stepping down
an ice-path to the river
like an Incan on his sliver
of Andean terrace (steep, frozen).

Downstream, the dark-eyed Jessie O.
(steamboat captain’s daughter,
great-grandmother)
was just a child, coming up from below

St. Louis... O Jessie Ophelia...
Cleopatra Desdemona...
Solominka, Marina...
frescoed on a ceiling in Verona-

by-Neva, maybe (in a dream).
& I, only mere boy,
half-yearn... imaginary
Longfellow, flaking off the stream...

Your dark water-crossroads, Pawnee-
Hecate.  Whirlpool
of Eurydice.  School
of Dante’s cinder-journey.  Three

ways, all phosphoric (thundering
falls).  Only to find
that light Diana-mind
Justinian burrowed, for his high welding –

only the lightest spider-thread
from Colchis dawn will do.
For Juliet.  You too,
my child, may skip the tightrope-tread.
