from light snow-years

COPPER RING

Snow tumbles into Minneapolis.
Twin Cities.  Meanwhile
the InSight capsule
settles onto Mars – whose promise

is to probe beneath the surface,
appraise the molten core
of our God of War
(riddle of the Minotaur).  Space

beckons insight down path P
toward planet X
our dream of PAX
curled inside violence (a middle C

unrolling from the Lake of Galilee).
O Beast from Ocean,
dread Leviathan –
a void between two notes... blank lee

of the abyss!  The infant’s misery –
missing her heartbeat
once, with her complete
Oneness... whorled... into infinity?

Where Martian drones attack Queen Bea
(just being Bea, around
a crater in the Netherlands)
by orders of omnipotent Pharaoh

whose eye is like a palindrome
(kayak in garage)
from old (Ionic age)
Emordnilap – our catenary home

                   *

a long-suspended violet bloom
breathes hope, & yearning
for some answering
anemone (your cypripedium

reginae).  Orange-azure M-bridge
for an owlman... almond
OMO... woman-bond
of wisdom... dancing G-bride...

light between J-pillars, Okean-trees!
Out of the twomb
you spiraling come,
@tlantis – Jewel of July, high C of seas!

A copper ring from Palestine
incised with simple krater
& the name, PILATE
recalls the one whose sign

for “heart” breathes from the swing
of time (your twin, Julie).
Rose, rowing from the key
called PAX, which passeth understanding –

yet from each ordinary tent
of refugees, each family,
once forced to flee
from the mad king (sad infant

Minotaur), will come to bear
a normal world again –
out of the dream of man
& woman (breezes flowering the air).

he was no Big Fish

SWEET CORDELIA

Like a Showy Ladyslipper in the woods
unseen by all except
chipmunks (scrabbling adept
through silent clerestories of dead

cedars) Hobo strayed, from Ursus
Major to St. Apollinaire;
he was no Big Fish, barely
a minnow Star du Nord (Jesus

his seine-maître, toiling away
upstream).  America
steamed on, formica-
sleek, pregnant with Labor Day

& White-Tailed Rabbit & Polar Bear
looked on, from cell blocks
melting in the superflux.
The Man of Concrete was no longer there

(he’d cried himself to sleep).  Henry
by a berried Berryman
stood by, his Resurrection
Plot cartooned in St. Paul snow (flaky);

apathetic Oblomov, at the gazebo
spied Olga in the distance –
wading through native plants
like sweet Cordelia coming to rescue

jet-bagged Lear.  Earth dangled
from one silver hair,
suspended over the bear-
cave (striped with blood, star-bangled).

Minnehaha's moccasin

SPIRIT-WOOD
                             i.m. Edward Lewis Peckham

Step lightly in my mother’s house,
whispered a tiny elf
named ELP – himself
a watercolorist (a yellow lady’s

slipper’s footprint left the forest
on this day).  Cypripedia
reginae – Minnehaha’s
moccasin – graced this wilderness

as well, making a pair for Joy
& Beauty (graces
almost three).  Time paces
seasoned out of winter, so employ

your dancing shoes, fiery Hiawatha –
roll like Polar Bear
around that pinpoint star,
sing like a loon, like your happy

father (Thalia-glad).  Nature
& Manitou join hands;
a Turtledove blends
sea-sounds, all about green Eire;

urn burials, gardens of Sirius
swim synchronizing
rhombs on monarch wings
(a rugged Paradise for ladybugs)...

one dance-call through spirit-wood
or jadestone flute
sows dreams of Camelot
(like waves of wheat around a vineyard).

*Note : Edward Lewis Peckham, Rhode Island artist and naturalist, painted a watercolor of Cypripedium parviflorum - Yellow Lady's Slipper - on this day in 1866, 150 years ago.  See illustration here from the Rhode Island Historical Society.
