in the shadow of Notre Dame

TO YOU

To you who have walked with me
all along this many poem.
I would translate my diagram
of raven wing into quick algebra.

As daylight stretches into spring
I would head to Beltrami
a worn-out refugee –
Itasca hearts to weld by wring.

The Iron Range is as our life,
cold for sunrise, fire
by dusk.  Evening Star,
Dove-Bird, be thou my wife

                 *

whose effigy is coppery Peg
centered in Big Muddy silt
at Pentecost, green to the hilt.
Cahokia palm (with Easter egg).

She danced in the shadow of Notre Dame
a firebird, on 5/29
with flammable cardboard mural crown
for Apollinaire to remember (at the Somme).

& she wheeled across flat American clay
from West Branch, a circumference
of byzantine raven-sense...
to lift sad Earth toward the Realm of Day.

heights & depths

LOVE LEADS

In the phosphorus dwelling-place of the Most High
Dante, murmured Hobo
will I be able to hear
that melancholy train-horn cry

so-so long gone?  His pal Henry
felt that ol’ pulsing flame
of lonesombrero, becomin’
churnagogue (centripetal clay) –

that emerald lichen-moss of Giuliana,
flanking a time-hewn sepulcher
with it still whorl
of tesseratic Emperors & Empresses... ah

Psyche, from those regions which
are Holy-Land!  Smoky
incense signals eye-
in-hand, Galla (yon casket-niche).

The soul is feminine.  The turbulent
churnagogue is melting
galaxies, in buttermilk –
hamlets of sacred discontent;

YHWH, detached from patriarchal kings
unveils a weird Coatlicue-
possessed & epileptic Dante-
muse... Venusian fire – & Jonah sings

Love leads us up like moth to flame
from steel-train Iron Range
down to Delta... strange
diamond, Latrobe (El MLK mandala-frame).

mark how red dust leaps

GATEWAY RING

The trickster-shaman & the prickly prophet
frame a stumbling-block
you can’t dislodge... mock
as you may, puffy lectern-puppet.

It is a fundamental moral world
they dramatize, a place
of breathing flames – their science
is conscience, this life a dream unfurled

on stage (his banner over me was love).
On board a fellowship
from birth, we skip, we slip
& slide toward the deep (sky-alcove,

ocean-sepulchre... Osiris-canoe
full of Isis-candles... grave
of MLK, our architrave).
As if returning to our own soul (true).

In West Branch, Iowa (my grandmother’s
home town) there is a dark
moss-green catafalque
of Isis, adamant earth-mother (who remembers).

& the North Star of the martyrs shines
like a seminal spark
over the Iron Range.  Mark
how red dust leaps into lifelines –

how a merry-go-round of American clay
swings toward the gateway ring
upstream, down.  Shaping
newborn, translated children – maize, hay hey.

like San Francisco vertigo

PAINFUL CORNS

Henry’s inching toward the center
of his poem – bright high gyre
like William Golding’s Spire
(splintered, keening, full of ire).

In the Cathedral at Rodez, we saw
its balsa-wood replica
(like seedling, or amoeba-
virus) – Jocelyn’s vanishing awe

lifted to depths of infinite regress
like San Francisco vertigo.
Yet it shall not be so
with you.  Your realm is humbleness.

Your solar crown, a crown of thorns
your aureole a poor halo
picked up (after the show)
by crotchety vets (painful corns).

Somebody tell me where we’re going
with all this, Henry!
The acorn in an almond tree
makes not much sense; canoeing

(not a major sport in Italy) is
unlikely to resolve the fight
between the mining money’s might
& piping pioneers of wilderness

(attainted Oz).  Henry dozes
in his miniature oak tree –
a mythological Charlie...
& will he wake?  Check JB’s glozes.

hen hides under blanket

LITTLE RINGS

In the muted Bruegel colors now
a raven’s-eye view circles
round twin Mirror Lakes
in Mendelssohn, so long ago.

Heidi & Holly, Jamie Freeman –
kids in a panorama
skate across my retina
from a Flemish Ice Age (Union

Pearl, foundered in frozen cup).
Laertes, will you drink
with meI think
not, yet... & so I take it up.

How gravity spins round the Sampo,
Longfellow – how Minnehaha
eddies through Edina
like a maelstrom over Nanabozo

– silly wabbit in the old cartoon
of Manitou & Redman –
stormcloud, lightning (Hen
hides under blanket, ‘til monsoon-

tornado trundles off to Canada).
Rabbi, Rabbi... Raven-
priest, Melchizedek... when,
O Wind, will this wallowing miasma,

lethal raincloud, lift?  A voice
from hurricane murmured –
when the agate here immured
in North Sea tears, as in a vice

                    *

floats into primeval Paradise
upon a simple kayak-word
out of the lunar hoard
of acorn-candelabra : REJOICE.

The train rumbles over the bridge
in the iron night, in the rain.
I won’t be back again
until Ferrara meets the Iron Range

in a poem coming down from winking
Starry Night.  Those whorls
are fingerprints – pearls
whispered out of Ocean, drinking

planets, orbits, icons, emblems
drawn from infinite thirst
for a milky source (first
taste of infamous black diadems).

Bears navigate a starry circle
over Berryman.  The stone
crypt glows in the bone-
castle.  Jessie Ophelia will

step down from the riverboat
beaming for Minneapolis.
The sky is gray, is
Minneapolis, St. Paul... c’est tout.

In Mendelssohn the Mirror Lakes
are ripples ever-new.
You’ll understand... you
live there (little rings an iron makes).
