it's only gravity

SEA-SALTS
… an astronomer consulting the stars to-day would announce
that the most favourable day of the year for weighing light is May 29.
                                       – Arthur Eddington, Space, Time and Gravitation

The brightness of the light shines more or less
in various fields of stars.
The Hyades, for instance, are
magnificent – rays bend around the sun’s eclipse

according to their gravity (1132?)
& their displacements make
a parallax, will shake
the skies – like that black hole in Virgo

where the whole cosmos in its photon rings
as in a coelostat on El Principe
looks back from a funhouse mirror
mired in the cryptic gloom one Friday brings

(in April, in RI).  So when Prince Hobo Hal
sets out upon the Ocean stream
paddling his gyroscope-trireme
his dim reflections shade his violet pal

Jean-Jo, behind their glare.  It’s only gravity.
They glide along past green Cahoki-o
beneath a soaring Gateway prow
toward topaz Gulf (ineffable Mardi Gras)

where Jean-Jo’s mild humility
(like unknown soldier or
grey pebble on the shore)
emerges – lightweight solidarity –

& swathes him in a dove-grey cloud
of granite apses, limestone
spires… an airy congregation
of sea-salts (& makes his father proud).

up in Montrose Park

PINE-SMOKES

The war to end all wars was done.
On May 29th, 1919
Sir Arthur Eddington
tested heavy light, suspended

in a thread around the moon-black sun;
so gravity bent clay
toward refining accuracy.
Black Elk extends to six directions

silent gratitude & recognition,
just as an icon speaks
in speechless pine-smokes
or a painting glows with valedictory

emotion.  Around the summer solstice
rose-phosphorus sunset
seals the monuments’ regret
in Washington – western promise

magnifies & coalesces, in a microcosm
(up in Montrose Park,
at Avon Place, by River R).
That armillary zodiac, or star-prism

revealing violence, imperial dominance
(diagonal to its redeeming
countersign) – entangling
mn-mutter, amid all circumstance…

sweet Angel, levitant above the cancer
of the Capital; fleet-
footed Evening Star, bright
Pocahontas (waterlogged Delta, triangular).

Where the crooked sumacs are

BACKWARD THUNDER

The Redeye of these freight cars’
heavy backward thunder
over rubidium crossbars’
X.  Where the crooked sumacs are –

their creaky grey akimbo-structures
(rusty caducei).  Amorpho-
phallus Titanium?  No,
not quite... but ruddy, like Osiris-

Oedipus (up 3-Way Highway,
where the pylons meet).
Eddy Parallactic,
relatively paralytic – all that whey

so massive, bending light around
Caesar’s own seizures,
jade embrasures
(pyramidical, tyrannical, profound).

The iron Bruegel earth turns so,
in snowy dunes.  Until
one feathery perpendicular
percolates up (with bleaker crow).

Light eddied, slow (28, 29...)
where a spring coils
moss-green (oeuil
of Bosch, in Kansas City sun);

where Iris plants meek sovereignty
by Eero-Eeyore Gate – &
Eurydice, come late
May, rose... (tiny Iona tree).

Add it to the quaint & curious volume

SPECTRA BEE

The spectre of a raven, carved
in ink above the dusty
door, the door to an abyss
beyond the evening river

Nile.  Rehearsing my remorse
once more... so toss
Einstein to 529 (Lorenz
aggression-transform) – on course

toward decreation (Eddington eddies
echo in papyrus
reeds).  He’s US
(a relative, at least) – voice-

breeze through checkerboard fabric.
& Raven, O... her shadow
dove into my gray
memorious blender-alembic –

clouds of milk or milk of clouds
from whence the winking
spectra bee.  Keening
I owe... I owe... Iona sods

& Iowa rows (dappled Columbia).
A stone in the corner of
RI... reunion-trove
fallen from sky.  Cornucopia

plumb with casket (evergreen);
plum turtledove
binding with love
clay child & jealous heaven.
