Henry having a royal fit

ARIADNE’S CROWN

A limpid morning, Palm Sunday.
In the little woods
behind the Shriners’ (closed)
Hospital, gaunt oaks lift branches high

in anxious supplication (to an emerald
Acorn King).  Prince Hal,
scion of OK Gal, in his corral
of febrile & uneasy crowns, grows bold –

to place his father’s own upon his brow
in the Jerusalem Chamber
(where Huck & Jim clamber
aboard… that cardboard scow,

the trumped-up King of England’s dhou).
The river bends, reverent
& full of revery (blent
with the clay into its royal slough).

You boy, there!  Yes you, boy
rivery O-buoy!  Come here!
King David shall appear
& dance – like naked singularity

or Solomonic wormhole, full of sacred
density – before the Ark!
& with the flicker of a quark
the center of the galaxy turns red

& churns like furnace of the cosmic kiln –
inverted mirror of MLKy
Y’Way – so massively
reflecting (like a missile-toed oak-gall)

*

that mauve & scarlet Rooster of the Day
who chants his clear call
to Event Horizon Wall
& leads the Magi home – another way!

M87 – black hole (multiplied
by 56, at least) –
from center of the feast
of lights – preternatural Virgo, Argo-eyed

Hagia Sophia – Isis of Ocean River
barge!  Prince Hal
trembles now, elliptical
epileptic – empty Apollo quiver…

overshadowed by that Thunderbird
shadow-of-shadows (el Rio
del Espiritu Santo).
His Ariadne’s Crown only a word

for the implicit eagle’s nest of silence
where the plague-eddies
of blind King Eddy
disappear into Big Muddy, & the dense

congregation of the Humble One
who rides a mule into town
(distance-divided by their own
disease, their wrangles for the crown) –

are suddenly hushed before those lips
mute-smiling, like a rose canoe;
those palms, encircling us now
in one speechless embrace… (love-clasp).

plague stalks the King

PIN OAK

When the great cities are covered in grass
& nomads return, to forage & hunt
will they remember President Blunt
who saved them from civilization?  Alas!

President Blunt is anonymous too
his towers demolished
where servants once polished
his golden doorknobs, his superb statue.

What happened?  A corona followed him home
from the golf course, one day…
did his nation betray.  Now
his dogie named Money no longer will roam.

Plague stalks the King, going blind
as of old.  Old Oedipus
(our homo sapiens rebus) must
die for the herd (driven into the blind)

& civilization, our slave-driving hub
must await the next trickster
to merge at the mixer
& shatter the wiles of absurd Beelzebub.

Thus time-gravity, suffused with vertigo
informs our animale compagnevole
how pride goeth before a fall.
The voice you heard (long time ago)

out of the cave, whispering low
was your own ghost, human.
Soft-yodeling Robin, on
pin oak branch (before Cahokia).

February, face-to-face

VERTIGO-CURL

It was a night of misty melting;
Hobo, the boho, sawed
through his dark glass so
in old St. Paul.  Janus was hinging

everything on sister Sue’s nag,
at the racecourse (Mordish
Hippodrome) – his wish-
ful thinking left him holding the bag.

The sky mottled gray, like a blurred
chessboard of dirty snow.
An alleged RI rainbow
filtered through Amina’s pocket (mirrored

Pocahontas), while a Balkanized
cannibalism consumed
the demos, knocking Sue
Mixam to the maximum (paralyzed).

Irma admired the Emir’s muscle
from her stolen distance.
In that mossy manse
with her ear to the hearth, the hustle

all over the earth seemed a triangle
built by Souperior Deo
for a bonfire canoe
– his own, by Odin’s kayak!  & to bungle

it was Man’s bad gamble.  Sal
Miniato & Silo
Paennim could tell you
as much – ‘twas comet Groundhog’s tail

                        *

after all.  So they went eel-gathering
all over Galilee for that
matter of Bretagne, mate –
the official King, along with his blathering

& corny Maid Minniver, his lovey-
dovey yaw-way L-vessel.
She would sail through hell
for old Ossifer Osiris – hand-in-glovey

with him, all the way!  Ecstatic Itasca
purled in the tiny whorl
of her Vertigo-curl,
like a Topsfield spanner in Alaska!

She was very moving, that sheepish yak
shellacked in the clay.  Like
an emerald in the smallest tyke
of a state, of all states – the Union, Jack!

She dwelt in the heart-hearth of Odd Eddy,
looming through mystic slips
like Evangeline E. Nilegnave (skips
across rocks down Jeannie’s Mississippi);

like a raven over Neva, like Anna
acting the dove in our eye
– is you serious, Rus?  Why
risk ice for Osissyshipiris?  In Louisiana?

Hobo says, I see our sis Lady Liberty
surge like Old Ironsides
through the fog, on this Ides
of July.  Let’s go find her, Henry.

a thing a thane might ship

MUDDY WINDVANE

The muted pleading of the cottonwoods
meshed in a counterpoint
with myriad redundant
autumn leaves (Chet Baker, Miles).

Sorrow & joy, sickness & health
in a subtle weave of shocks
& echoes (mental blocks
were mystic chords once, Keith).

Beneath your penumbra, Alighieri –
a shadow pantomime.
Fleeting Ravenna rhyme
(Julie on the swing set, Henry

sailing from the limb, laughing).
The logic of your enigmatic
kerygma, then, epileptic
showman?  Merely a line curving

across historical time, into the light
emanating from your heart,
Galilean nazir-sport –
over a chessboard made of night

& day, an abba-rhyme pattern
(pax-bellum-pax, or king-
usurpavenger-prince... a thing
a thane might ship, a Grecian urn).

Bent overlords still shadowbox
musical echoes in refrain.
Mendelssohn leaf-rain
leads me back to Mirror Lakes

                   *

– twin lakes, twin mirrors (eyes
of Oedipus, Antigone) –
Twin Cities ceremony
curing the incest-curse (of Paradise).

You cannot have a child of gods
& men.  Like an albino
freak, or Minotaur
the twin will upset planting periods

& hunting prayers.  The High Priest
tears his robe.  He
says he is the One – he,
he!  Messiah-singularity (least

shall be greatest, last first).  Huh?
Henry earn him tragedy –
dumb spiral out of clay
turn muddy windvane of Columbia.

All about people you know, poetry.
Little Rhody, see –
Rog Williams, Tommy
Gould (Annie Hutchinson too, sadly) –

plumb from Sir Edward Coke
into self-government
by way of Charlie Second
(seedling restoration, kingdom oak)...

til little Providence become
a way of life (like yesterday)
& you reckon the penumbra
yon Lady of the Harbor harbors (hum)

all the way to Mt. Moriah

ALMOND-BREAD

This weightless branch of butternut
floats in the August stillness
like palm-frond of Isis
in sky-barge of Cleopatra-Nut.

Earth grown deserted as a pyramid.
Nothing moves in silence
like Lion-Sphinx
crouching with a question on her eyelid-

casket – just for you, Orpheus-
Oedipus.  Your arcane
cane limps against the grain,
gone serpentine... a missing Theseus.

Where’s Ariadne then?  Arise,
light Jonah-seer, sweet
grey-eyed sister!  Meet
him in the wrinkles of the Minotaur’s

disguise, find him in the stone face
sleeping like a Roman guard –
motionless, Medusa-hard,
until your gardener grins in his place.

She’s kneading my clay now, adamantine
mother of amusement.
All the way to Mount
Moriah, she’s dragging my crown.

She’s molding the planet, children –
shaping this loafer into ships
of almond-bread, with those lips.
Those eyes are sparks for tinder-men.

conversation for kids

LITTLE PEARL

The Hebrews found a verbal replica
for Pharaoh’s pyramids.
Conversation for kids
(& sheep, & goats).  It was Jehovah

came to intervene, to interview.
Some saw an Oedipal
triangle – shadow wall
of mud-baked bricolage (dream stew);

some saw trois anges, craning down
from Paradise – to speak
with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac
(that lightning twin would play the clown).

The pyramids are office towers.
No one will explain
how so much pain
depends on callous fingers (ours).

The just one wears a diamond pin
stuck through the heart –
QUADRANS IN IMO ET
IN SUMMA SUBTILIS (wide-eyed dolphin).

The Middle of the World, he said
& made the sign of six
ways (willow sticks,
or cottonwood).  So truth’s inbred.

Her little pearl of rectitude
is portable – rides
water as a cheek glides
tears.  That’s all (beatitude).

a little air

ALMOND MEAL

A little air, a melody
out of Mendelssohn, maybe –
like a wisp of smoke you see
afloat above Red Wing one day.

Like pipes out of Apollinaire,
trompette marine – sole
zigzag rigmarole
of an enigma (serpent’s lair).

You walk the blank maze, Oedipus.
With ghost of Ariadne
by your side.  Keen
pal, forsaken thesis – surplus

collateral, original
betrayal.  Henry Adam’s
dusky twilight madam’s
mad, quiet... a virgin owl

nested in stone Columbia.
Only her bird’s eye
as the crow flies
correlates phantasmagoria

out of the desperate heart of Cain
into clay valves
where muddy stars revolve;
through the dawn labyrinth again

from light, toward light, with light
blazing mild power –
like some firefly bower
mowers glimpse of a summer night

                  *

beneath remote aurora-shower
bearing fathomless delight
miraculous & right
to chastened human hearts in flower.

So I behold Dante & Job,
David the King,
hedged by ironic ring
of instinctual violence – the mob

of envious, avaricious rivals
circling their prey
to make King for a Day
once more.  Florentine hovels

I see transposed to Catlin prairie,
vertiginous Beatrice
mingled with Platte clay.
To the horizon’s elegant Bluejay

molts saturnine Cawtantowwit
with amorous Jenny-
Jonah; they buried be
only to soar in monarch-flight

O harbingers of Milky Way
whose kingdom is an Ocean
Stream – salty communion,
sea-green flock of Liberté!

Out from the massive turning of the wheel,
where Miriam churns the cream
of every starfish dream
into her almond meal (Messiah-seal).

Jonah was a fisher of men

NO THING

Hobo couched on his frozen bench
& felt the dream of summer
flow through his mummy-
shroud (cocoon from Danish trench).

Everything from no thing,
mused the broody dagger-
raven, plastic bagger
limping toward immortal spring.

Must mean some one looking out
from furled oak leaves.
No one conceives
how close a whisper knits the plot.

Poverty’s a hollow ache.
Lento, lento, the fast
approacheth – one last
Sabbath before Easter break.

The one I love’s an almond slip
between Pharaoh & Laius.
An airborne edifice,
the bubble in the level’s grip;

the fisherman’s égalité
gal from Gesthemane
surfacing lambent sea,
coulombe crooning Liberté.

One blinding black diamond
clothed in octahedron.
Orange junk lantern,
Hobo’s caravel flamande.

Red Wing colors

TWIN WINGS

Sun through winter clouds, light
grays, pale blues...
Red Wing colors –
Mississippi stoneware (molded tight).

The heavy clay, churned by the river.
Earth forms distend,
disintegrate... days end,
begin... arrows in a quiver

of darkness.  Black Sea, cold, dead.
Salt lashing the eyes,
unseeing eyes – Oedipus
in his beast maze (Minotaur Ed).

Bruegel with his traps & nets.
Sardonic Injun Joe.
Taut lips of Little Crow.
To the bottomland we go, eaglets –

where Janus wrestles in the ice
with icon of his father.
Horned (narwhal weather).
Stars nest in a pair of dice.

High in stretched vaults of shade
stone elms lean down
over a golden corn-
maze (Ariadne made).

Light-roping constellations chant
reunion, reconcilement –
on twin wings of prairie-tent
coulombe (your ghostly complement).

Stay, Momentary Confusion

Taking off where I left off a few hours ago, to retrieve Sophie from school...

We were mumbling something about critical detachment, about memory.  "Tradition" in poetry.

Tradition : bit of a taboo expression, eh?  Reactionary, neo-conservative, T.S.-Eliotos antique odor there.

Of course 20th-cent. Modernists revolutionized the whole notion - backward & forward, left & right.  But that was already a long time ago.

When I think about poetic tradition, I see something essentially unavoidable, like "family".  But this tradition is very much not a symptom of some filial-Oedipal-patriarchal-economic sense of duty.  It is instead something organic, almost biological.

Watch how young poets struggle to launch collectives, find affinities, soul-mates, define themselves, test themselves against be-laureled paragons, aspire to famousness, & so on.  What doesn't so much interest me here are motivating ambitions & rivalries.  Rather the curious thing is the anxiety, the helplessness, of poets - confronted by the fact that poetry is this livid knot of incomprehensible, uncontrollable, inexplicable lumpish living somethung, which nobody know how to explain, correct, control, or abolish.  Is like the inheritance of some arcane glob of biological (living) what-not, handed down from generation unto generation - the voodoo box of elegant poison Grandpa bequeathed us, whose Grandpa left to him, & so on, with an unreadable curse scribbled on the lid : Take Good Care of Me, Never Abandon Me, or You Gonna Die.

What are all these MFA programs for, if not that?  What are all these mags about?  These awards, these citations, this enormous prestidigitation of prestige?  These quotations in stone?  These honored dead, these beloved unread classics?  Touchstones?  Operatic ecstasies?

The point of the sword is immediacy.  Poetry doesn't need explaining : it's like a powerful speech, it justifies itself in the persuasive dominance of its message.

All the talent of Madison Avenue is compacted here in this syllable of recorded charisma.

But actually, I don't believe all that.  It's like the poetic version of a simplified, bowdlerized, philistine "American Dream" : the past is pointless; everything of value is about me, here, now.  Poetry is the anti-tradition. (Here we get down to the marrow of the dumbed-down American myth.)

Great!  Cool!  Make America Drool Again!  Great Gatsby!

Sounds pretty psychological, actually.  Frazer, Sacred Wood & all.  Siege Perilous.  The double-bind of succession, father & son.  Elongate twilight of Freud's sacrificial totem, across the "grey matter" of poetry itself.  (So maybe it is a symptom, after all?)

The Great Game.

But you mentioned game... (unicorns?)... so let's reiterate : I had this hunch or notion this afternoon about "detachment".

If we think about what we love, about what's beautiful... it occurs to me that the beautiful is always overdetermined : is "meta", one way or another.  What's beautiful entails, and emanates from, reflection (in both the physical & the intellectual sense).

Memory suffuses the object with feeling, identification.  What we love involves reverberations, echoes (mnemonic stimulae).

So, curiously, detachment - the distancing, the psychic freedom from passionate, emotional absorption - allows memory to evoke beautiful response, because it is fused with the recognition of tragic reality (the actual distance of the past, the ineluctable remoteness of lost time).

The plangent feeling of the truth, the power of the documentary.  Classic-Romantic.  (Italian Neo-Realism?  & then - Garden of the Finzi-Continis.  Deserto Rosso.)

The hour draws on... my deep-seated hunches & haunches gettin' tired here, blog.  For Augustine (& for Nicolas Cusanus) time is purely psychological.  Bracketed by the soul.  Begins & ends there.  This is a liberating concept, on the one hand - & also an abyss.

But for Augustine (following Virgil) poetry (music) was the very strong magic of ordered time.  The enchantment of syllables, framing, architecturally grounding, the sacred ineffable Now (planted, as Joyce put it, on that very void).

Proust also, echoing Augustine.  Re-echoing the poets (in prose).

The frame supports the picture (Rothko colors dream into infinity).  The beautiful an echo, a reflection.  Sketch, abstract, icon, exemplumimago - of the immaculate supra-beautiful.

So where does this leave poetry?  Tradition?

Sounds very Symboliste.  But remember : poetry is this intractable breathing spiritual animal - a stubborn problem, a dilemma - a sort of spiritual refugee, a crisis (like Roma in Roma).

Nobody can work it out in advance.  But I do believe it might be possible to re-think poetry (with a capital P) somewhat as the pre-Revolutionary, post-Revolutionary Russian Acmeists did (Gumilev, Akhmatova, Mandelstam).  With a sort of Cusanian (conjunctio oppositorum) passionate detachment, or critical engagement.

The paradigmatic or characteristic quality of contemporary cultural reality is immediacy.  All the Faustian technological forces are concentrated on disseminating the charismatic (marketable) product.  Of course there's a large element of risk involved, but this is of the essence of productive enterprise.  Success is the by-word; our future well-being depends on the happy financial outcome.

By the way, I'm not against free markets, or anti-capitalist.  I just believe there exists a scale of values which must mediate the struggle for economic domination, on behalf of equality, liberty, human rights, the common good, the safety net, the peaceable kingdom.  There are things more important than luxury, status, charisma and sway.  There is freedom.  There is equality.  There is justice.

Poetry inhabits this realm of universal spiritual values (see: Mandelstam on Chaadev, Rome, moral freedom).  And by grappling with the chaotic force-fields of articulate speech, it establishes a free space for what the Acmeists termed "the Word as such".

This sounds like a very hi-falutin' bequest.  But it's not, really.  I'm looking at the tradition of the beautiful as a manifestation of the detachment of elegiac (yet strangely hopeful) realism.  Of Blake's metaphysical "innocence and experience".

Social media is bursting with constant, relentless, monotonal cultural aggression, masquerading as sophistication.  The little screen is inundated with seductive, screaming roadsigns.  King Blurb is Trumpet for a Day.

Poetry, on the other hand, resonates with inherent doubleness.  It is not what you think, it is not what you feel.  It is not even what you read.  It is another kind of sign, pointing toward your beating heart.

Listen to it, keeping time... like John Donne's bell.  It tolls for thee.

Pines in Atlantis-land

STANDING ROCK

In the powerhouse of Providence
lame little Eddie Poe
must play the game hero –
like a minnow tar, fire-pitted mensch

against Mini-Mini-Tick Leviathan,
his haunt of fearful gravity.
His force is a depravity
of animal instinct – Heraclitean

axis of control – apes’ pecking order,
magnified by policy
(raison d’état, you see).
O too-familiar monster, O – our

puzzle-master, oiled in wrestle-hold,
whose flags flap overhead
above each engineered
corpse-shed (floods memories untold).

The silver dime, Elsie – your Grecian
Artemis – will not
suffice; this Ariadne-knot
must be released, for peace to reign

the dam must burst; an equilibrium
of equity must level out
the bruised minefield.  Bright
misery in wells of eyes... come,

Maggie Shekinah, come Galilean
Buffalo Gal (Eureka-
Psyche)... Standing Rock
pines in Atlantis-land – rise up again.

Where the crooked sumacs are

BACKWARD THUNDER

The Redeye of these freight cars’
heavy backward thunder
over rubidium crossbars’
X.  Where the crooked sumacs are –

their creaky grey akimbo-structures
(rusty caducei).  Amorpho-
phallus Titanium?  No,
not quite... but ruddy, like Osiris-

Oedipus (up 3-Way Highway,
where the pylons meet).
Eddy Parallactic,
relatively paralytic – all that whey

so massive, bending light around
Caesar’s own seizures,
jade embrasures
(pyramidical, tyrannical, profound).

The iron Bruegel earth turns so,
in snowy dunes.  Until
one feathery perpendicular
percolates up (with bleaker crow).

Light eddied, slow (28, 29...)
where a spring coils
moss-green (oeuil
of Bosch, in Kansas City sun);

where Iris plants meek sovereignty
by Eero-Eeyore Gate – &
Eurydice, come late
May, rose... (tiny Iona tree).
