part of the main

HEARTH-FIRE

I stepped outside of the quarantine
early this morning (one quiet
crystalline April moment).
A mourning dove, sequestered in a pine

nearby, was practicing, solo (adagio
con molto sentimento d’affetto).
& therefore do not send to know
for whom the bell tolls – Adios, amigo.

We don’t hear them much now, here
as once in Rhode Island.
& it’s hard to comprehend
how time-space telescopes into the mirror

(O my clay-rimmed, worm-riddled heart
& soul)… yet her melancholy
plaint echoes, in me
the solitude that ripens all my art.

We do not belong just to ourselves.
We are part of the main.
I am a half-hitch in a seine
flung from an ark, whose kelson delves

across the Black Sea of the universe.
Borne by embattled star-murmurs,
this pressure on the king spurs
martyrs to out-run the royal curse –

so Socrates & Tommy More, Jesus
absolve the men who killed them;
so their normative love-law anthem
sighs out warm fire into cold sacrifice.

whispering the news

NESTED BRANCHES

When the Eternal comes, says the Rabbi,
& what does he mean?
May be the Ghost behind the scene;
the tear with grain of Ocean in your eye.

The truth is whole, the truth is one –
& what does this mean?
That Love’s criterion
is rectitude, in every human situation.

Gumilev, that Petersburg poet,
called it chaste vision
welded like dew at dawn
to blades of grass, the spark of holy Paraclete.

The infant acorn was King of the Wood.
The leaves bent, whispering the news
through Ariadne’s arbor… (hers
the thread – her nested branches overhead).

The Rabbi is a child of God!
cried Mary Magdalen.
He dies on this occasion
since he bears the prophet’s spiral rod

twirling from heaven as from nothingness.
His smile defies your gravitation;
he will come again
after three days of stony sleepiness

like Jonah sprang from salty Milky Way;
the rule of theft & violence,
of Minotaur’s demonic fraudulence
is coming to an end.  Truth shines like day.

at edge of Gulf, at Mardi Gras

MUSTARD TEAR

So ancient Carnival-time creaks around
Hobo, at winter’s nadir –
up & down the copper
serpent-river, ice to Gulf, from underground.

Seigneur Latrobe & son (masonic
architects) glide on
into their slanted lichen
tombs, below the levee.  Chronic

exploitations, born of lordly guile
condemn brother & sister
to the poorhouse – maybe
forever (never God’s will).  Meanwhile

Mardi Gras Indians from Cajun swamps
tiptoe, sauntering in beads &
feathers, vaunting weeds
beside Big Muddy… spin their vamps,

magnanimous & happy-go-lucky!
As Frazer phrased it once,
the Oak-King was dunce
for a day, scapegoat – to bind three

realms, to decorate the grim
reality of king-dom
(manacled to thrum
of male plumage, sly rhythm

of greed).  Meanwhile us tramps lie in our camps
the ciphered segregation
of a riven nation –
the politic paralysis of frozen clamps

                *

unbroken for a generation
yoking partisans
of limited taxation
with particles of airy explanation.

Yet lo, Hobo! the sleepy sleepwalker
still reigns under the rain…
King Virbius in blue vervain,
Osiris-man of verby us (dumb talker)!

One lone mustard tear of Isis
flowing down the dream;
knit-wit of Union, seam-
by-seam… Columbia, thy hum he is!

& out of one immense unspoken heart
on its wheel of suffering
flies this foam… a sparkling
shield of steely martyrdom – cart

of churl & Charlemagne, Big Bear,
Charles’ Wain – iron hinge
of Milky Way!  Melange
of pipesmoke sacrificial princes, there!

Martin, & Jack, & Abraham…
William & James… lights
winking from Astraea’s height –
sea-foam & flotsam of the cosmic Lamb!

At the edge of the Gulf, at Mardi Gras
Hobo floats to sea, to see…
out of wrath & misery
lamps of justice, liberty – her wings, Noah!

UNDOING CAESAR

In this misty February pre-dawn dark
a Snow Moon, over silent
cedars, glows phosphorescent
silver.  Sacred thumbprint-mark

of first king (saturnine, defunct).
& I’m whorling his identity
for the FBI (maybe
some type of Memphis pharaoh-punk?)

in case we need to trace him back
to the source (Itasca
tourniquet? some kinda
hieroglyph?).  Small floaty Hobo-shack

in the heart of mudpie heartland.
Little coracle of clay
shaped for Lincoln’s birthday
maybe (Valentine’s Day).  Unmanned?

nay, manned – like a catamaran
by every air across the sun;
part of carnival season,
a gloss on Pentecost.  Mighty One

coming-forth, like hurricane or tornado
from a whisper, cave-
mouth… out of the south-
bound, multitudinous, incarnito

nexus of brownian river-motion…
out of the roaring flood
of driv-down dust, blood –
wind-sown, windblown clay… spun

                      *

into handmade UNION, like an eye-in-hand;
sliced from the Nile-bed,
bled from Osiris-head,
bricked in a pyramid of mason-sand…

our salt earth… squared beneath an almond
lamp like hovercraft
or hydrofoil (fore-&-aft
in quatrefoil) – little fylfot countermand

(counter-clockwise emerald) out of Iona;
like a coracle of Columba
or Camelot for JFK
her Isis-essence emanates from Iowa –

West Branch of western harmony
amassing trusty Athens
& Jerusalem-to-be (Hen’s
covenant of clear spring… see?

– translucent integral of truth).
& that tall rose window
tossed (like buckets of stone
water) to the skies, is massive, Ruth –

a cornucopia of acorn habitats,
a capital of washing
towns – a Kurbsky sting
against dim Ivan coups-d’état;

or Osip vs. Iosif – MLK
withstanding FBI –
Vindman in vindication (sigh) –
humanity undoing Caesar… Hallelujay

serpent in the clay

SLOW WHEEL

Henry leans on Hobo, stumbling along
the river path.
Sullen serpent of wrath,
her mud-green bronze glistening

mutely as she goes, her banks
tight-lipped, angry with Man,
older than Man.  The sun
barely registers on shady flanks

slipping by, tongue flickering.
The plot thickens.  Clouds
darken where crowds
hearken – listen! – princes, bickering...

& who shall have the succession?
A cast of characters –
kings, clerics, warriors –
mime St. Vitus in scared possession –

sleepwalk their sacrificial totem
for a perennial repetition
of the same (again, again).
& armies marshal around Bethlehem

to protect the kingdom from its violence;
a convenient woman shall
be found, to dance the ritual
in their place (a chosen princess)

& her cacophonous Parisian Rite of Spring
will set the keynote for a war
to end all wars (for
a while).  Meanwhile the black spring

                     *

of Rio Mississippi coils in anger
on the Iron Range, under
the North Star.  Thunder,
Hobo, Henry says.  It’s Woodpecker

come back – alight near Red Wing,
so they say.  What
does it mean, old mutt?
He muttered back : it don’t mean anything

to many, Hen.  She walks beside you
like an iron canoe,
the spiral J of Synagoga –
like that Micòl in Ferrara, like a shadow

of Our Lady.  Spiritu – loving you,
who don’t deserve her
sacrificed for Minotaur
on every altar, from Cahokia to now.

Then Henry saw a little emerald
almond leaf, shaped
like a boat... wrapped
in a river-whorl, spun, twirled

downstream.  The Delta beckoned,
where dark Mère Lousine
grinned from the deep.  Lean
over some more, Henry, Hobo intoned.

There’s Benjamin Latrobe & Son,
sunk like a foundation
in the Gulf.  An American
sun blinked, dark.  A slow wheel spun.

cloud & catalpa, Minneapolis

Cloud & Catalpa, Minneapolis (Martin Johnson Heade, 2019)

GRASS CLOVERLEAF

Everything grew simpler in that high room
overlooking Jerusalem
when he added up the sum
& gave us his Thanksgiving poem.

The apostolic laying on of hands
was just an afterthought
Mary Magdalen taught
to keep the Presence each one understands.

The knot held.  The silverweb
floresced, in centaur arrow-
shots – from Antioch to
Thebes, up to remotest Gad-Gab

(Ethiopia).  Axled on coffin
of coffins.  Buried deep
as Noah’s ark.  Sleep,
King of Kings (like everything human).

This gemstone of the Southern Cross
shines like diamond
out of emerald
almond – mossy quaternion, grass

cloverleaf (in shape of heart).
That little tree will root
where all the branches start,
where all the rivers roll (sky-girt

perpendicular – little Everytwig
leaning against current)
– unto that iron agent
sluicing the Delta to a brazen fig

                    *

shriveled, dry (as is the way with figs).
Yet Wisdom is justified
in all her children.  Hide
now, O Man – Ouragan digs

into clay.  Rotating so solemnly,
she shakes the bone-limbs
from their joints, skims
lightly over coastal property

– only to uproot, destroy.  Bideth
nor roof nor door, Tornado!
Like the Iron Age you know
twisted to shattering shadow... Lilith-

Crocodile, climbing from Delta
to muddy matrix of
St. Louis.  Scorned Love
twisted into dust-mandala –

substantial b-flat of the galaxies
stilled, played in reverse.
The little tree of Ursus
Minor – little star, catalpa’s

iris-blooms – starts wheeling
counter-clockwise.  Clover
culminates your
integral almond-canoe.  Sing,

Muse, Oblomov-grail of prairie earth!
The great wheel turns.
Jonah’s corn-maze yearns
Restoration... (Miriam’s rebirth).

dialect of high & low

CLAY NAVEL

Literature might be political.
The dialect of high & low,
the pyramidical Pharaoh
& Erich Auerbach in Istanbul...

slaves muttering (familial)
athwart the exaltations
of regal Lion-Suns
& River-Moons (extra-terrestrial)

their jocular contra-dance lingo.
Dantean, obsolete
vernacular (obsidian);
mosaic featherweight, grave Galileo.

Everything formed from nothing... out
of a pinhole in the universe.
Clay navel – Osiris hearse
called up by current, cattail flute.

Whorls of tree-rings mantle each mortal eye.
Isis in Iowa,
Blackstone of raven-sigh –
Cautantowwit, under the Milky Way.

The tacit origin.  Your motherland,
O King.  Incipient
restoration, air apparent...
transparent equilibrium (beatitude).

Near the steel vault of St. Louis.
In the seine of the fishermen,
over the Mississippi.  Sign
from tree-logs, Jessie Ophelia... always.

surfing Delta gumbo

sketch by Benjamin Latrobe, architect

LIGHT DOWRY

On this day, 200 years ago
Benjamin Latrobe won
the municipal commission
for the bell tower in New O. –

St. Louis Cathedral, surfing delta
gumbo (French-Indian-
Spanish-Anglo-American)
on canoe-back of turtle-flotilla.

Oak Apple Day, Restoration Day,
Rhode Island Statehood Day
& many another day
no doubt (not far from Whitsunday).

In the well of the king, of the king who must die
(before time began?) shone
a shade of green pine
grieving... like an old Irish eye.

Luminous melancholy, just a shade
from joy – from the well
of well-being, when all
shall be well (amid all things well-made).

When frost of fright-scorn, the old
icehouse of sacred king
slides into melt... & everything
shines in right splendor of childhood;

when young ones in Rhode Island
or New Orleans lift themselves
to the light dowry of El
Shaddai – her pact of love and understand.

in the end zone

MAJOR CHORDS

In the shadow of a song of songs
the anthems are always major
chords.  Mendelssohn... (our
home in Hopkins)... everyone belongs.

Tonight the rival city-states,
the patriots, blow
ram’s horns.  O
say can you see... big potentates’

eyes dilate... Vergo rolls out
Hail Mary feint (over
Washington Monument) –
Crazy Horse Rushmore... Touch-

stone!  The transfixated crowd
explodes.  Ghost dance
in the end-zone – Lance
Galahad will take the shroud!

The mob desires to crown a king,
a king of everything.
Sponsors oblige, with bling –
the glittering circlet is a diamond ring

for nubile Woody Berge Ouvrante
(Cheerleader from the Bronx
Will Marry Uncle Onx
Next Year).  Preview this fête galante!

Apollinaire heard the cicadas
droning in the oak –
of how the wind spoke
dry coracles of wheat to Colchis

                    *

& the streetlight in the snowy dark
zones a frozen cross
against the pavement (Loss
for Brady : Bells Will Boom for Belichick).

We’ll laugh about this tomorrow
(or maybe in 2020).
How the crowd, honey,
decides – & doesn’t care, somehow.

They insist on sacrifice – Sacre
du Printemps, ma chérie.
Tiptoe to thundery
finale... just before the war (nacre

& objets d’art, Guillaume).
Leap to the metronome
over the Metrodome,
Sophie – you will survive this doom

of frightened infants in their uniforms;
Thin Blade Societies
& Rudra puberty
sodalities... unconscious norms

(they know not what they do).  Thread
woven for a future prince –
hearts, purple sequins
imprint Valentine wreath for his head;

he’s singing of an anti-kingdom
where his anti-father
(shedding all that bother)
chords an unquenchable welcome home.

LIGHT SHIVERS

A silver filigree of January ice
atop the Mississippi.
An eye from remote milky
paradise congeals mid-stream.

In the mandorla, the king smiles
who must die.  Rain
wells from Magdalenian
locks, sways down the aisles.

Reality’s an unctuous parasite
whose masculine will
melds to feminine style.
Psyche’s a rose (hermaphrodite).

You search the scriptures, yet
you do not come to Me.
My mother is a refugee,
her kid’s a goldfinch in a net.

Light shivers off the snow, & down
the stream.  Only a dream.
A 3-dimensional scheme
with vanishing pt. in Providence town.

They chased that woman to her grave,
who danced in Paris on the eve
of the Great War.  Her wave
of splendor... Morning Star’s mild sleeve.

La Mancha waits like Camelot
for the happy restoration
of good ship Madeleine
Marie’s cosine (bottled in an oak-knot).

Meditation on a funeral

HONOR GUARD

Soft muted early winter light
outside the National
Cathedral.  Great whorl
of reds & blues, at dazzling height

O rose window, still glowing bright.
The honor guard (Marines,
Army, Navy) forms lines
like intricate toy soldiers (boy’s delight) –

maneuvering, in wonderful coordination
powerful precision
beneath the boom of cannon,
brass band’s hopeful invocation.

The dignitaries have assembled.
Paired front aisles unveil
in allegorical detail
old icons of authority (kings trembled

once, when they beheld such signs
of a succession crisis).
On the right, witness
the mourning son & heir – thin lines

of tears streak from his hawk’s eye,
flank his aquiline profile,
his anxious beak.  Meanwhile,
on his left, an accidental guy –

the crown-usurper (with a face
like a disgruntled frog).
Even Sully the dog
got more headlines than such disgrace,

the preacher said (speaking in tongues).
Haunted, defunct princes,
princesses acquiesce...
the fatal, dominant thug belongs

                 *

to us.  Chief executive,
or executioner?
Headsman (for our
gentler Republic)?  How can we live

in a democracy, ruled by despot?
We cannot.  Our choice
is clear, as once we faced
when Lincoln gave it voice – the violet

is trodden underfoot by hate.
What’s at the root
of all our discontent?
Man’s thirst for domination, set

in place since his umbilical was cut;
rage at the shrinking womb.
Like Jonah’s boat-turned-tomb
of alien Leviathan, the doors of Night

close, flooding, overhead... the child’s
unconscious & primordial
nightmare (abyssal
mystery).  Note each tyrant’s wild

psycho-disgust... the fluttering hands,
the flickering deceit
– detached from all sweet
reconciliations, lawful bonds.

The flag-draped casket of the patriarch
squares with the glowing rose
window.  Still hearth glows,
somehow – Wisdom’s scintillating ark.

the Winter King (a mummer's play)

BLUE LIGHTNING

Hobo, sprawled among November reeds,
cattails.  His scattered bones
ache on jagged edges.
A chill is in the sky.  Light feeds

the icing-over swamp, the acid-
green vomit (absinthe
effigy of spring).  A plinth
of plastic raft supports his dream-kid,

Henry Hawkeye – duffed.  In mummer’s rags
of scruffy black, to match
his sullen rage (a match
is all it takes).  Here comes Antigone’s

antagonist... here comes Creon, Jason...
Here comes Le Grand K
himself, all brassy
mass and armored mirror – one

half bull, the other carny barker
in a cream straw hat.
Just look at that!
He laughs, he sneers, he boasts, he barks

surrounded by his bulky thugs,
stiletto-dames –
No Shame in Crimes
his badge declares (pinned with slugs

to his forehead).  The plastic raft
quivers to his stomp.
This is gonna be a romp,
he crows, & circles Henry, fore

                   *

& aft.  Wispy, cloudy, quiet Henry’s
cornered.  By the water.
No weapon (though an otter
peeks up near the scrim).  He’s

holding only a tiny pocket mirror,
which he flecks upward
toward the pale sun.  Hard
to say what will come next.  Your

ghost dance, Hobo, flickers photons
like Planck’s constant
from an old field tent –
where photos of Kennedy, Abe Lincoln,

Martin Luther King hang, haunted (black
& white).  The King
is dead, long live the King,
Ave Maria, Henry whispers back.

& suddenly a mass of flame pours out
like pale blue lightning
from a Chartres ceiling
down upon a maze, blazing partout

across the center of the raft.  Truth
is our Law, O shallow
princeour commonweal.
She rules, & will spring forth

againlike that torch-bearing Liberty
all clothed in copper green
welcoming everyone...
So Hobo saw.  The raft was empty.

FEATHERED WHEEL

The king is carrying his cross
wearing his crown of thorns.
Only his mother mourns.
The restless crowd is at a loss.

So history plays out
on broken banjo string –
scratchy LP spinning
over & over the tethered Scapegoat

Song.  A narrow beam of rust-
red copper, through shade
of rock.  Copperhead
of light.  Serpent mouthing dust.

Tan sand (some Navajo camouflage).
Everyman, eaten
by ants.  Has-been.
Hobo, dreaming in a stream-montage.

Nobody.  Only air, flashing
like feathered wheel –
Thunderbird heel?
Lo, him – Kingfisher, splashing.

In the clay matrix, Morning Star
pirouettes in Paris
for Apollinaire.  Pax
lounges with Liberty, while from afar

twin pillars of a temple rise
in unison – an azure
octave, lifting her
amid dew-glittering, sea-breathing sighs.
