if I could gather all 9 muses

IRON HORSESHOE

If I could gather all 9 muses
around the iron horseshoe
Hobo found along the shore…
a middle C stranded by silted rivers.

If I could loop a thread-corral
around the bullish history
of bardic poetry…
Whitman & Olson, the whole passel

of a thousand Pounds – a ton
of raw American aggression
packed in Julian tin can
of salmon absolute (O prodigal son).

You must bind up the strong man
if you would rob his house,
strums Shep Jesus –
the Son of Man opposes Czar Ivan

K. Trump (& all his lawless minions).
For Moses was an anti-
Pharaoh, & his text a fey
neutrino-trace – reversing their dominions

(anti-matter realms of fearful absence).
Their malice plays for keeps –
the quasi-Reagan creeps
who stigmatize Abe Lincoln’s conscience

of profound Union.  A government
of people, by & for people
whose penny is a steep
L-rectitude – the normative ligament

                   *

of every child of God (my soul to keep);
the stony fundament
that grounds each document
hedging the tyrant (as ye sow, shall reap).

For this Hobo bent toward St. Louis,
where clays rotate
around an elder potentate;
the foolish king, whose power was on lease

to that familial mutuality
(the kinfolk circle
& the starry wheel)
Jesus displayed in his nativity.

Star of David, hidden in the clouds
like 4-leaf clover
in a rainbow cover –
ark or Argo of celestial crowds.

So history plays out as Tauromachia.
Watch Minotaur succumb
to Ariadne’s plumb,
Man lifted up beyond Monarchia;

that restoration of all things
the servant-son proclaimed,
chanting beside the famed
Magdala Stone (rose of sharing) –

when Clover twirls in Hobo’s fingertips
& Isis-eye looks from his palm;
when JFK comes home
& Venus blooms… & Sophie Coulombe skips.

where the wheel pivots

VIA FRANCIGENA

My path of J, my Via Francigena.
You can read it on the Q-
line train, between St. Lou
& Monk’s Mound (clay Cahokia).

Choo-choo, J-J, Joanna, Giuliana...
on the milk train way,
your dewy morning ray –
autumnal hoot of helmeted Athena

(hooya-hey).  Fled with her child
from rude dragon.  Nightmare
tyranny (unveiling there
the root of human woe).  So the scald

burns his tattoo into each trumpet call –
the empty mirror of the king
crowns him equal to everything.
So gather him weird into your iris squall,

milky Sophia – gold sunflower
stretched into an almond
ark of mustard limbs (wand
blooming with abject surrender).

Because I love, because I love...
Behold, my child, I have
no wrath.  & in the hive
of clay lips, trace her architrave –

tacit surrender to a violet
sown by storm (below
these wars of villain & hero).
Where the wheel pivots, my river-pilot.

to shade the children from the burning sun

my Hobo Code coffee cup

WAVE-THRUMS

I’m coming to the crown of the river-tree
& the mouth of the copper serpent
following Hobo, where she bent
toward the Delta of American poetry.

& there’ll be singing & dancing, each clown
hootin’-&-a-hollerin’
& dressed up like an Indian
to celebrate the simple joy of Union.

& I’ll trail behind Benjamin Latrobe
the good mason of Washington
taking after his dear son
to build a floating city from mosquito-glob;

I’ll watch that Phoenix-bird arise
like an evening Jonah,
spreading her ghost-persona
wings from Frisco Bay to Providence

to shade the children from the burning sun
& fly them to a new playground
where wave-thrums sound
their steady oceanic Truth for everyone

whose eyes merge in the Sophie-bark
curving over the Churnagogue
(octagonal pine-log
hover-canoe; dynamic-ceramic arc

empowered by the muscled wheel
of hopeful human clay)
– J-stroking toward an Agape
aflow to share, to guide, to lift, to heal.

in the end zone

MAJOR CHORDS

In the shadow of a song of songs
the anthems are always major
chords.  Mendelssohn... (our
home in Hopkins)... everyone belongs.

Tonight the rival city-states,
the patriots, blow
ram’s horns.  O
say can you see... big potentates’

eyes dilate... Vergo rolls out
Hail Mary feint (over
Washington Monument) –
Crazy Horse Rushmore... Touch-

stone!  The transfixated crowd
explodes.  Ghost dance
in the end-zone – Lance
Galahad will take the shroud!

The mob desires to crown a king,
a king of everything.
Sponsors oblige, with bling –
the glittering circlet is a diamond ring

for nubile Woody Berge Ouvrante
(Cheerleader from the Bronx
Will Marry Uncle Onx
Next Year).  Preview this fête galante!

Apollinaire heard the cicadas
droning in the oak –
of how the wind spoke
dry coracles of wheat to Colchis

                    *

& the streetlight in the snowy dark
zones a frozen cross
against the pavement (Loss
for Brady : Bells Will Boom for Belichick).

We’ll laugh about this tomorrow
(or maybe in 2020).
How the crowd, honey,
decides – & doesn’t care, somehow.

They insist on sacrifice – Sacre
du Printemps, ma chérie.
Tiptoe to thundery
finale... just before the war (nacre

& objets d’art, Guillaume).
Leap to the metronome
over the Metrodome,
Sophie – you will survive this doom

of frightened infants in their uniforms;
Thin Blade Societies
& Rudra puberty
sodalities... unconscious norms

(they know not what they do).  Thread
woven for a future prince –
hearts, purple sequins
imprint Valentine wreath for his head;

he’s singing of an anti-kingdom
where his anti-father
(shedding all that bother)
chords an unquenchable welcome home.

rattlesnakes & wild hogs

woodcut by Mary R. Gould

BLANK MIRROR

Hobo & Henry (mirror lakes of ice)
hunker down by the Miss
in apocalyptic freeze.
Global worming – ain’t nice,

offers Hobo.  Henry stands on a log
of spongy cottonwood,
to speechify.  I would
gather everyone in D.C. – slug

it out with themeny!  Hobo : Who he?
King Henny Gowanabe?
Beware Coatlicue,
m’deer!  She got that panoply

um rattlesnakes & wild hogs,
rootin’ all around –
Iagoons, Macboars... ground
Z for Camazone swamp hellhound dogs!

In the blank mirror of unconsciousness
the stone-cold powers
& the lotus-flowers
collide in a collusion...  Heartlessness,

she mutters.  Hobo sunk down.
Cheer up, old boy,
sez Hank.  My Book of J
opines beneath Cordelia’s Crown;

she shone me that Madonna del Parto
flaring like Indian mound –
high Sophie’s dancing ground
(who shall restore our humane Beneficio).

guarding the garden

painting by Phoebe Gould (ca. 1992?)
GREEN CORN

Half-moon tonight, like a silver flask
of molten lava.  On this date
George Washington was translate
(1799).  Here’s his life-mask :

fine profile.  Merging in white clay,
like a peaceful moon.
Landlord, when all’s said & done.
Valley Forger, sensing Californ-i-ay

in the green corn of his plantation
garden.  Grace Ravlin
etched that evening scene –
sweet Virgo in Virginia (dawning nation).

The myth rides with the Indian.
Scars limbs of slaves.
Everyone behaves.
A raven-crumb plummets into ocean.

Something’s lugged back, out of clay...
the lunar wilderness.
Innocence, blessedness –
Sophia twirling in the calm of day.

Like young Hal emerging from a golden egg
(his father’s legacy).
Attainted crown, see –
buried bones in Resurrection (Pig’s

Eye) Cemetery.  Across the river,
on Lakota Bluff.
Two swordsit is enough.
Gesthemane is haunted, Indian-giver.

autumn in my heart

SWEAT EQUITY

Like falling from a winter bridge
in Minneapolis.
Absolute zero-ness.
11.32 ft/sec (straight-edge

it, carpenter).  A little life-saver –
gold bubble of air
in the wooden measure,
Chris (dolphin fin-waver).

The little tree, the little almond
eye of Providence.  A
sort of weathered prudence
from rough planks – sweat-bond

of every laborer in vineyard
or in field – Georgia
footprint, selah
in every cemetery, bard.

Like this confusion of nature
circulating good will.
Invasive humble
habitat, Roma imprimatur...

signature of spiral J
(Ojo de Dios,
owl o’Sophia)
out of the oak-knot, honeybee.

Lightning furnishes the room.
So fall into my heart,
Julie (where start
the roses on their river-loam).

the melodeon of civil peace

GREEN PALM

This silver light-pull on the black pathway
like a miniature dragon or
sperm whale (grey Minotaur
immured in Ocean labyrinth)... Ariadne

dropped it here for me, maybe
(bowline from safety net
strung beneath Golden Gate,
or strand of hair turned silvery

along the wheel of time & gravity).
In him the root of the matter,
wrote Cotton Mather –
he meant that turbulent sectary,

mild Roger Williams.  An apple root
it was, the legend holds;
clasped in earth-folds,
his buried limbs became sweet fruit

(at Prospect Terrace, where his bones
were laid).  Sweet peace,
he called it; a release
into that harmony among distinctions

Roger christened Providence, & we
e pluribus unum
a spiritual freedom
planted in magnanimity;

a willingness to mingle tares
& wheat, so infant conscience
tried by experience
find its own starry stairs

              *

& not by force, but gentleness
its ripening prepare
to climb past nightmare
to the melodeon of civil peace.

So gather up stray iris-strands,
Henry.  That self-same
moonlit trail (slim
path between wrath & Rhode Island’s

liberté) was Alighieri’s narrow way
between Imperium,
Ecclesia... low hum
of Jonah-Beatrice (out of the grey

cloud-surf of Ocean River).
Garden & wilderness,
Solomon’s shepherdess...
airy Sophia in Hopkins windhover...

O delicate light-threads, pendentive
on twin pillars, anges
d’orange...  Who arranges
your catenary smiles?  You dive

with her dive, you rise with her rise,
surfacing... Hail, Jonah!
Out of the whale, Jeanne-
Arc!  The mercy in your eyes

– wonder in ours!  A gold mandorla
where the twin points meet –
meld into one – & greet
the Union with green palm... Alleluiah!

the rooster crows at dawn

EARLY ARIA

Moss-green & rusty brown, the shades
of veritable November.
Carapace for a fire
of leathery hearts, when autumn fades –

hopelessly stained & cracked, like
little nations stewed
in sour grapes – each rude
philosopher of One-&-Many stuck

on stiff prongs of mutual destruction
(as if our differences
were so many instances
of envious violence).  Someone

disconsolate, like moody Hobo,
comes to his dead end
sans lover nor friend.
The bridge beckons, the river flow...

it’s then that her grey shadow
curves to be with him –
grace of the seraphim,
milk of galactic commingling Rio.

A yellow-black monarch skims south
like nature, figuring rebirth;
her beryl-fiddlehead of mirth
lifts Hobo to the vernal mouth –

where dark Sophia & the turtledove
gather in Providence again.
The rooster crows at dawn
on city walls... an early aria, up above.

Le Pont Mirabeau

BLUE PLANES

Autumn already in the air.  The lace
net lifts slightly in the window
breeze.  Down the road
a train thunders steadily across

the iron bridge.  Eads, in St. Louis
same river in St. Paul
ebullient waterfall
descends into incessant sluice-

ways.  At Fond du Lac, Guillaume
will wave his pipe   the smoke
floats in blue planes   OK.
Autumnal, your pellucid tomb.

Under a beautiful water-mirror
flows the safety net.
My waif on the parapet,
my Juliet... little evergreen spear

crowning a rangy monarch span –
my songe, my sign, my Seine.
Cloverleaf Corn Maiden
twirls her blue-green mist of pine

on heron-foot again   Sophia
skips through the basilica
like Liberté-Columbia
her grey eyes scan geomatria

here twin circles merge, twin shores
align omega points
&   Maggie Galilee anoints
her Galileo with the milk of stars

8.26.16

Today is the birthday of poet Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918)

let her skip

DAKOTA HEXAGON

This quiet August day toward
the cusp of autumn.  Green
vine-light in the cavern
where Henry hides his raven-word.

That empty chair in Dante’s sky-
deep rose, for all the hoped-
for prophets, emperors...
& here’s Sophia’s little throne (my

dancing-master’s rosy resting-
spot).  Let her skip
fearless across the ship
of state, her toy basilica, questing;

the Greyhound of the Lord, her
vengeance, comes to this –
gray clouds of Providence
replete with rain; a pregnant mother

radiant with clearing day; the shades
of persecution blown away
by ocarinas (clay-
shell turtledoves, dolphin parades).

Ineffable golden Hephaestus-net...
veil of corn fleece over
a West Branch face.  Her
sister in D.C. (Adams duet) –

icon of Miriam & Magdalen,
Dakota hexagon
implicit in the sun
of Washington... cartwheels, Columbian.

across languages & worlds

CEDAR HANDS

O calm August river, weaving
under your ceiling of gray
fluff!  I’d like to say
you are a figure for Edith, rocking,

singing Sophie to sleep, somewhere
above Ethiopian night.
I’d like to formulate
a lamp in a window, out there

on a foggy lump in Narragansett Bay –
Rose Island Light, maybe –
what stands for certainty
in the midst of rocky sea, the sway

of tide.  They’re almost finished now
with the bridge repair.
Her double eyebrows bear
their concrete filigree, & show

twin circles in the river’s glass.
Their delicate embrace
a fractal carapace
for curving lips of one round lass –

a sea-green pebble, calipered
by radiant massive Einstein
armature.  So shine,
my lighthouse pine – like shy brown bird

or Great Blue Heron – one sharp eye
across the moving waters!
Agape holds stars
in loving stillness – rhyming sky

                      *

with earth.  It is an ur-rhyme, personal –
a Neva-petroglyph,
an anchored spider-skiff,
chaste common akme (Eeyore-humble);

like moony pleb with sunny Phoebus,
roaming Apollinaire
with domed Apollinaris,
Love is that hearth-melding force

that fuses Unity & Liberty –
soul freedom is the spark
of arcs.  I found a monarch,
lonely, in the donkey straw you see

down by the iron river (pausing,
perhaps, between White
House & Soldier’s Rest).
We bowed to one another, browsing

sheared grass, cordially.
The song began like this –
a dream made manifest,
Railsplitter... prodigal Boy...

held in grey threads of dog days’
dawnlight.  Soft rainbow
pigeon croon – low
throaty turtledove song-maze –

dream-songe across the meadowlands
of languages & worlds
farfalla-far – she whirls
& jags... floats into cedar hands.

of the clay peoples

PEACOCK’S EYE

Path P stretch in six directions
out of Cairo, Huck,
sez Jim – any way you look.
One of them north-south junctions,

I reckon.  There was a labyrinth
of red clay trenches –
dead men in its clenches
like flies hung in a spider’s tent

– heavy that clay, so heavy!
Like the bottom of the sea.
How could a little child be
dancing in such dismal gravy?

She’s Pueblo, of the clay peoples;
they put away wrath before
the sun go down, f’sure.
Lookee there.  & through the peephole

of his fingertips I saw (obscurely
as that garden of Sheba)
a lightning pathway – Sun-Ra
threshing floor – arisen merrily

from ripened Flanders wheat (so
melancholy).  Like Van Gogh
seized with a fury-glow
of happiness... Persephone?  O

yes!  Threading her crane-dance
through a peacock’s eye –
purple Hagia Sophia’s
woolly poncho-swirl (at cave-entrance).

What's in a sine wave ?

PALM WAVE

This milky February sun
foretells another spring.
Still far-off – winging
eyebrow-arch reflection

of a snow-blue almond bridge.
Yet near... a looming
whisper (out of Red Wing,
maybe) in your ear.  Sweet pledge

of union, set sail southward
by wattle-crane basket
to mossy reed thicket
below Delta (belle Campagnarde).

Knot-eye of Popeye raptor-
sailor, here trans-
mogrified to mildest
peahen-cockerel (Eeyore-

Sophia, high over Frisco Bay).
Equable & everpresent
omni-beneficent
orthogonal well of charity

infusing one & all (mandala-
dome, dominion’s
doom).  Everyone’s
chest de trésor – heart’s ah,

life’s oh... amended Manitou
of Man.  For me & you,
within the vernal blue
of ocean wave (palm-feather true).

Circus leaps

RAVENNA DOOR

This winter Mississippi, silver-
blue as a kingfisher,
must be my Ocean here,
now.  Old Rhode Island (Roger

Williams tugging at his oar
along the Narragansett
shore) is like an inlet
glinting on Ravenna door.

This plain flatland’s no nacre
objet d’art – no Rimini-
Jiminy jingle-tree
nor fizzle-pop of firecracker.

It’s the tip of a massive iceberg
mound, with Ojibwa scrawls
from International Falls.
It’s a raven-furled ironwork

Father of Waters (del Espiritu
Santo).  The dark ink spills
from Andean condor hills
like shade from a single pine... you,

yew.  One sinuous dove-grey thread
from woolen crown (above
almond eyes) – Love’s
quipu, drawn from riverbed –

the peacock bow of freedom’s O
(a circuit of Noahtic leaps
that signal seamanship).
Her line grips like a sheepfold

fence (through centuries of snow).

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

HIGH SOPHIA

My mother’s golden watercolor
of a corner by the porch
door – let us approach
this summer morning autumn splendor

as it was, & will be once again.
An open door in Hopkins
Minnesota spins
its Manitou of teeming pain

et vin (an infinite childhood);
Alighieri in Ravenna
summons high Sophia
in the guise of Beatrice... would

she still circumference all human
knowledge in her arms?
Beyond Hell’s harms
stands Boethius – Consolation

rhymes (decline & fall of Rome)
with Dante’s futurismo
(Roma onde Cristo
è Romano) – one bright sunlit home.

Paisans, turkeys, sheep draw near.
The meal c’est commencé.
Massasoit & Williams here play
host – what was a funeral pyre

unfolds to cornucopia.
The crux of natural law
is liberty’s Commedia
all-human Earth joins Milky Way.
