upon St. Swithin's Day

MONARCH MILK

‘Tis hot & muggy in the octagon
upon St. Swithin’s Day.
& will it rain?  Say.
St. Emperor Henry’s (Holy Roman)

also, once upon a time.  It’s stifling.
An unreal toad usurps
the garden throne, & burps.
His orange tongue is mean, & trifling;

his fire-red refuge-chair is for a child
who hasn’t come home
in 33 years.  Christendom
conquered the Holy Sepulchre... wild

slaughter & rejoicing on this day,
1099.  But will his Ghost
lift from that gloomy host?
Joachim daubs a fingerpaint contrary

blindly, with bare feet (a cave-fresco
for San Francisco).  & Henry
plots his own obscure & minatory
figure : double wheels.  Of milky glow

& river-clay – Cahokia, North Star.
To turn the Great Year
5 29s... & spin from here
some monarch milk (a little almond to restore).

most August wind-chime

MIGRANT TABERNACLE

So another August 8th-month
inches toward its close.
Whatever Pilate says,
goes – IN RI, nailed to a terebinth.

Whatever happens, happens, now.
An old man is an oak leaf
skimming like a thief,
going to ground.  & when the winds blow

the silver pipes of Sophie’s chime
go tingle-tangle... melody
of sea-blue cherub, see?
Clasping Columbia, his sweet tame

turtledove.  While her fire-engine chair
waits in my octagon
beneath late-summer sun –
a migrant tabernacle... Amor-

Shalom... transportable to Paradise.
Her father is a recent
immigrant, & citizen.
The Shekinah is mercy for chaste eyes –

unquenchable fountain of pure love
for simple existence, for
its mysterious source.  Our
wisdom, Sophie – like your turtledove –

comes shimmering down... she permeates
all things, & everywhere.
As it was always, my dear –
the mind of Love revives, creates.

O day-song of a day

MINUSCULE EDIFICE

Some ancient Oklahoma sage
knows life as integral
& whole.  A round corral
of circle dance (light wind on stage).

One heartbeat, straight from Manitou.
John in the river, calling
each to prayer, & fasting –
washing clean (life to renew).

The little red plastic lawn chair
Sophie uses catches
the sun.  Minuscule edifice
subject to ridicule, she will suffer

small kids to be comfortable here.
Her persecuted refugee
will be your judge someday –
the heart of old Bluejay casts out fear.

Some perfect day in June, she’ll come
for you...  Shine, raving dove
from Resurrection grave!
She’ll ask what you have done, she’ll sum

you up.  And it’s not too late
(amid these arcs of oak
& pine) to add your spoke
to the wheel of penetrating light –

to hear Natasha’s whispered promise
in the ear of Mandelstam
& join the rapture of a psalm
clasped in her kiss within a kiss.

in memoriam Liu Xiaobo

SAND-CASTLE
                                                i.m. Liu Xiaobo

The workmen are building a great new wall
beside my octagonal turtle-
hermitage – where Sophie’s little
ruddy chair sits patiently, for one & all.

Another chair remained in Stockholm,
waiting for a noble prince
to win his prize of Peace.
His prize is won.  He’s going home.

He held his vigil by Heavenly Gate.
Hatred can rot a person’s
wisdom & conscience,
enemy mentality poison the spirit

of a nation, inflict brutal life & death
struggles, destroy a country’s
tolerance, humanity...
They want to bury him deep in the earth

yet verily I say to you, unless
a grain of wheat falls
into earth & dies,
it remains alonebut if it dies

it bears much fruit.  I remember
the orange Chinese lantern
peeking its bright octagon
out of green shade.  Welcome glimmer

with hidden crimson berry – lamp
of mountain sheepherder
marked by the torture
cell like turtleshell (or scarab stamp)

                *

only to grope toward pine-green Liberty.
My beetle’s modest haruspex,
the ideogram for pontifex,
key row-your-boat for Vera City –

check the N-trail labyrinth.
This liver between Earth
& Sky was micro-moth
or Maximus (locked up til 44th

of July, by Bureau of Injustice).
His wounded knee, his tender
foot, his gentle mind were
furrowed brow, for cultivating scholars...

Thrones are made for serial tumblers.
You can demote King Tubby Lou,

kill Voodoo Queen Marie – so
what?  Arrestocrats come back in numbers

juggling for electric chairs.  Polly
Pound says so, the mystical
Apologist of Tyranny; she’ll
sow you Uncle Ez’s grapes – see

how they make great yappy whine!
(& his chinoise Confusion
still bakes a mean Rune
Cake.)  He not the Way, sez Hen.

The blot thickens.  Blue Emperor Mon-Ki,
with his twin princelings, Rude May-Hem
& Gilt Moon-Eye... descended from
Lord Me-Man, Minotaur of Die-Nasty...

                *

[sludge on the honey-scroll, I guess]
We circulate by arrow-
glance, the human sorrow
of disharmony (each creepy-eepy instance);

only the gentleness of Manitou
the windy sheep-liver
& fleet   lamb-giver
who stands   magnanimous & true

blue cedar (melodious   rainbow
of royal   Reality)
is King.  So let her be.
Your soul, sealed so, dear Liu Xiaobo –

your spouse, waiting by prison-house,
will flex her wings, & spread
your word – rise from the dead;
her torch (inalienable human justice)

shines from copper harbors & green hills;
over harm & over hate,
ever-flowing   light on light
descends   like turtledove   on twisted wills

to straighten ways   streams merging
into concord   toward the sea
Ocean of Charter 8   mercy
& fellowship   in gratitude   Thanksgiving

Day   after the battlefields are still
& Liberty beams   far & wide
her smile   across the tide
& turmoil of the mind’s   sand-castle jail

begin the Beguine

MINOR 7TH

There’s a baby high chair in the river
made of sycamore wood
(from Sycamore St., in old
Providence) – you could flip it over

& make a little car of it.
But the Miss is frozen solid –
can’t break the mold,
flow thru, maybe.  Love-seat

slung low.  The mood’s on Henry
sometimes, to be sittin’ there
– like Neptune, or Great Hare
the Leapin’ Dauphin (Huckleberry?) –

beyond the marina, where all the waters
congregate.  With Jeanne-
So-Dark of New Orleans,
the Cedar Queen (through the main door,

là.  La-la).  Her Rio never ends,
her rain is circulating
even now, hump King –
no matter which boar hounds, pretends.

Henry’s babble splinters echoes
down the ice.  Yet the flute
welds sheepskin & galoot
into a chord both Greeks & Hebrews

play (sustained diminished minor
7th, maybe, on
Ojibwan theremin).
Siddown – begin the Beguine, sailor.

the whole sweet Seine will glow

TINY BULB

A ghost of snow hung in the air
like glittering smoke.
Dusted from a hemlock
by a twirling jay – like nothing there.

Harsh cold rain goes crystalline,
shines in white waves
of domes (over sea-caves,
graves of grass).  Adamantine

turtleshell or judgement seat
of green sea-swell
beyond heaven & hell...
only a murmur makes complete

your copper frame, chère Liberty.
Emerald cicada husked
in tamaracks, at dusk –
vesture & camouflage for thee,

O soul set free!  Out of the spiral
gloom of time you come,
crown of the human kingdom –
like yellow-black spry swallowtail

up from your petrified cocoon,
or incognito monarch
skittering from ark
to ark (Amsterdam-Rangoon

Line – Mendelssohn to Mexico)
– or like a tiny bulb
planted in mirror-hub
of rose islands – blazing so

                *

bright the whole sweet Seine will glow
from end to end –
the safety net, my friend!
Jonah’s repast (Apollinaire’s tomorrow).

Thus the planet’s plain warm hearth
was set in diamond
& salt – with two kind
hands melded was gentle Earth

into a homely heart (Heimlich
maneuver from afar).
Gates cracked ajar –
the broken cistern, Cain’s conflict –

the Minotaur in every man –
the frozen ideologies,
bitter mythologies
of gulag-mind, in her began

to melt... the light played on the iron
spring... rust turned
green... mold burned
clear... the Psyche-lamp of Zion

lifted from the harbor.  Then
that fireplace couch of ages
in the molten kiln of sages
rose from black soil – crowed the Hen-

Cock!  Morning gathering beneath
the lighthouse surfaced
in your radiant face
O Matrix of candescent wreath.

down to St. Lou

SLATE PANOPLY

Henry’s Chair is in the woods,
beside the Rio del Espiritu
Santo.  Hobo to you,
mayhap – lost in his darker moods;

drawing a diagram in river-sand
of Ursiana’s barer pillars,
moss-bound Giuliana’s
pines (forlorn Ravenna swampland).

Emblems of spiritual epilepsy,
moon friar.  Lame lone wolf
Dante, crying for a proof
of integral radiance (nay, nay

sobs hunchback Leopardi).
Hiawatha whistles there –
follow the tripping Hare
Whirlaway to Itascasee?

The spring.  Mammoth drone of stream.
Down to St. Lou,
where airs axle true –
bloodveined grey sponge, clay dream...

tuning-fork in the river road.
Wheel, innocent rabbi,
through your Galilee
of primary colors – lift the load

from Henry’s sloping shoulders.  Bend
a prism to Columbia,
slate panoply of Jonah-sky –
who lights the harbor at grave’s end.

Henry's Chair

8.13.2016

let her skip

DAKOTA HEXAGON

This quiet August day toward
the cusp of autumn.  Green
vine-light in the cavern
where Henry hides his raven-word.

That empty chair in Dante’s sky-
deep rose, for all the hoped-
for prophets, emperors...
& here’s Sophia’s little throne (my

dancing-master’s rosy resting-
spot).  Let her skip
fearless across the ship
of state, her toy basilica, questing;

the Greyhound of the Lord, her
vengeance, comes to this –
gray clouds of Providence
replete with rain; a pregnant mother

radiant with clearing day; the shades
of persecution blown away
by ocarinas (clay-
shell turtledoves, dolphin parades).

Ineffable golden Hephaestus-net...
veil of corn fleece over
a West Branch face.  Her
sister in D.C. (Adams duet) –

icon of Miriam & Magdalen,
Dakota hexagon
implicit in the sun
of Washington... cartwheels, Columbian.
