one mustard spark

RAINBOW MOUTH

The splendor of dangling catenary arcs
of orange steel & azure
sparkling with slim sure
stride, sprinting beyond the bayside parks.

I saw you, iridescent Golden Gate
on a sunny day in 1974.
Where Juliet had gone before,
plunged into her absence... my jeune Fate.

These tears in the inescapable network
of mutuality, these tears
of things.  What heart bears
at eye of hurricane (one mustard spark).

In the still, small world, along the keel
of a trim equilibrium skims
love’s unconditional hum
of humble surrender.  Like a simple meal.

Like a mother or father who is always there
ahead of time, before
you are aware.  Will soar
with eagles & doves, your Aviator-

Mediator – volant-violet Adonis, lifted up
(beyond the rivalry of red
& blue) into the thunderhead
of Thunderbird (Jonah grail-cup).

Hum now, Evening Star, Columbia...
your rainbow mouth, Osiris-
child.  Over the crisis-
cradle, full of infant cries – la realtà.

etched in vernacular

BEEHIVE WITNESS

Dante’s rambles round the tamarack swamps
outside Ravenna.  Beached
hulks of Byzantium reach
toward the sea.  Inside, smoke-lamps

phosphoresce hieratic grandeur
(kind bovine gaze of Empress,
Emperor).  Alighieri’s
impressed – ecco l’ora serale

in those green sheepfold meadows
where Time does not run.
He pursues his martyrion
Crusader grandfather, circle of Mars.

He etches in vernacular his answer
out of deep parish history
to the welded Roman panoply
(Arcadian melody, Virgilian whisper).

I am a scribe who when Love speaks
hastens after, hearkening
noting everything down.
I haven’t heard from Bea in weeks.

I remember lips set with a grim reproof.
Down at the borderland
(Texas to Samarkand) –
Coatlicue, Tezcalipoca... beetling roof

of squalling Raven years.  Esta
su iglesia, Henrique?
She’ll be coming like Elijah,
not Europa, now (beehive witness).

Ravenna Diagram Reading Guide #8

R.D. READING GUIDE #8

HOLE IN THE DAY  (p.10)

“Hole-in-the-Day” : prominent Ojibwe chieftain who tried to rally tribal support for the 1862 Dakota uprising in Minnesota.  He was assassinated in 1868 near the Crow Wing Agency by a group of Ojibwe men.  Here, the raven is represented as a kind of “hole in the day”.

“left the ark” : Noah, on the ark, sent out ravens to look for signs of dry land

“Furnace... against azure” : raven in sky imaged as “anti-matter X-factor”, a metaphysical sign

“Oil-power” : pun on oeuil (French for “eye”).  Replays metaphorical changes on the “third eye” etc. of previous poems

“fodder for wretched // prophet” : the prophet Elijah was fed by ravens sent by YHWH

“Hovers / outside” : the spiritual otherness signaled by the raven

“Night’s black... one sphere’s damaged / grey” : the uncanny raven-otherness seems to return to earth through the back door

“One Rahab-hair” : the Biblical Rahab opened the “back door” allowing Joshua to capture Jericho

“In the theater” : poet sees muse-like figure or Dantean “old flame” in the Avon Cinema (Providence)

“Geraldine Fitzgerald” : lead actress in bio-pic (Woodrow) Wilson, and other films.  The “circularity” of her name, and its echoes of Ireland and JFK, are marked here

The hour draws nigh...” : by means of some alchemical movie magic, the cosmopolitan spirit of the film, and the actual presence of “Geraldine” in the theater, evoke this hopeful (Elijah-like) prophecy

sumac muse

AUTUMN SUMAC

The new Solomon will show
a spirit of discernment.
No more time spent
on wastes of shame, Sheba – no.

He might see the Parousia
if he takes care.
His friend Hobo (where’d
he go?) will likely not carouse

far, yah.  He’s by the river,
as per.  Autumn sumac
beads along railroad track.
Dry cotton bones, monsieur.

François might join him there,
under gibbous moon,
Paris monsoon...
cornered at the bridge of the stair.

Amigo Frank – piano soul of Frisco,
tempering tomorrow.
Palming witness so
to stigma of twinship, boy-o.

Thunderbird collects herself
over Red Wing swamps.
Imperial affliction stamps
[available in lobby]. Guelf

to Ghibelline, Dante wit Beatrice...
Moses and Elijah frame
their thorny throne (slim
acmé of suave pillars).  Touché.

banquet at the end of time

PUSHKIN MOVE

The banquet at the end of time,
the invitation read –
the living & the dead
to celebrate.  This pantomime

of solemn feasting they perform
beneath cavernous timbers
(burnt resinous embers)
foreshadows that preternatural storm

of joy, tasting our expectation –
when Eli’s empty chair
so hopeful (floating there)
is overflowing with affection

once again.  As we well know,
observes bright Magdalen –
beseeching, in the garden,
gardener (raw moon of woe).

& what it all may mean for Hobo
Hank, lazing out
his salvation-boat
conundrum (Solipsism, ho!)...

Can it be can-do canoe?
If anyone thinks they
know anything (See
St. Paul!) they’re in Pig’s Eye

sez he.  My inconsequence
is like a Pushkin move;
chess is like love,
government... clear as Providence.

HIGH WATERSHED

As when a song transposes suddenly
into more stringent chords
the charismatic words
Dante-Apollinaire relay

from salty mud-flats of Ravenna
hungry Parisian streets
emerge with copper rivulets
of Mississippi calumet – that gateway

mound out of the bottomland
that mundus in a grove
or Okie Argo alcove
up from rustling bronze riverbend.

A pileated woodpecker
with fiery crest drives
toward dread beehives
of Annie Oakley – checkmates her

bull’s-eye – knocks at the door
of sharpshooter & target
as she drills toward
his dragon-beak of pain & blood, for

leafy harvest-time of bread & wine
(ripe honey-gold high meed
poured out of night   freed
goldfinch   slipped from nest of twine).

So Thunderbird laced the perimeter
like one ghost dancer over
one ghost kingdom.  Power
flickered from its lightning center

                *

& with spark of recognition
the Life-whirr dove across
an abyss of non-existence
wakening green acorn nation

to restoration of all things
as it was in the beginning
ever shall   beginning
with your soul & mine.  The king’s

a monarch like Melchizedek
alighting on a milkweed
whose electric feed
mauve candelabra Shaker-speak

& lift the everlasting seed
to drift on orange wings
& ange d’or strings
to azure Gates   high watershed

for humble mule-servant   that beggar’s
beggar   slave’s life-saver
huffy Hen’s   broody engraver
Elijah’s raven   bearing messages

like crumbs of hope   for dying prophets
thirsting by the stream
to hear the pure Dream-
Songe   of limpid safety-nets

where rivers stream toward glory
in the salt infinity
one sarabande soul-tree
of beaming suns   their wake of Victory

the law is not a sword

WILD GRAPES

A timid April tiptoes toward
her Spring.  Gun-gray sky,
leaf-brown river.  Hobo’s eye
moseys from earth to heaven (&

backward, again).  Raven loops
his knotty diagram,
figures 8 a.m.
some eats (thin scraps he scoops

betwixt instinctual communal hates
of squawky flocks, nations).
Noah’s inflammations
Eli salts – warns, Don’t be late.

Fuming smoke signals just
add to his unease.
Alighieri aims to please –
his bones rest in Franciscan dust,

his narrow beak angles from spark
to spark.  Hearth-embers
flicker out drear winters of
scalding be-ice.  Imperial dark

is splintered by gold threads of light –
lamb-thin graphene ravels
the cave-mouth – mangy hovels
hearken to trompette marine (slight

return).  Apollinaire or Orpheus,
shepherds in New Orleans,
Ravenna... rustic scenes.
Under an overpass (U.S.

               *

or Rus) refugees convene,
lean farmers share
their plows... while everywhere
stones ricochet like bayonets (mean

answers mean, unkind unkind).
The law is not a sword;
it is a binding word
uniting variable humankind

proceeds from love, & so returns –
one warm traveling lamp
from isolated camp to camp
where Roger & Canonicus trade yarns

& Edward Elk defends each Everyone
upon egalitarian
thread-frame (one golden
safety net for all the wobbly children

of sweet Manitou).  Cautantowwit
whispers a Narragansett
name over each hamlet-
nest in Providence.  Let’s eat.

The gathering of crumbs, wild grapes
& hobos has begun.
Mississippi sun
beams west, southwest... Pacific shapes

crest arcs of rainbow (orange, indigo,
azure & rose)... an Ocean
State anchors her span –
Hope’s incarnation (Jonah show).

in Red Wing

JOY-DIALECT

The great apes crouching toward the east
to meet the light
Cautantowwit in flight
southwest, southwest (a raven-feast)

echo the caw-caw over Noah’s ark
(breadcrumbs for Elijah).
The future is for Jonah
or for Jeanne to bear (as oak

from acorn weathers Thunderer,
Earth-Shaker).  From these
enormous clay crocks
of Red Wing pottery (grain elevator,

stoneware casque) one Blue Morpho
or ochre-black Monarch
skims toward blind Psyche-
park (houseboat for mosey-Hobo) –

when Hero rises from the womb
of Nile or Mississippi
like Huck, like Jim (she
will be free!) across the loom

of frozen rim (Troezen or Petersburg).
In Red Wing, Frances Densmore
heard the drums pour
rhythm underneath the river – bug

slant like water spider’s perfect
pitch-black whispering
through tympanum – sing
beyond ice-frame (joy-dialect).

music of ordinary things

AERIE-FEAST

Music of ordinary things...
happiness at work,
when things go OK –
when the work is good, & skill brings

flowers to fruition; then at dusk
heading home, to family
& friends, where kids play
beneath a sturdy roof (hard task

fulfilled with courteous precision)...
plain telos of humanity,
pleroma of reality,
continuum of beauty’s diapason.

Grandfather’s house of rusty brick
along the River Road –
an engineer’s abode,
who loved an opera (Elvira’s cheek)...

One high lone raven corkscrews toward
the Pole.  This pillager
is Eli’s forager –
his black-hole fleece ties ragged

knots, makes nest for bread & wine.
Look how the prophet-priest
exalts his aerie-feast
where Time peals to a finish line,

B-flat – è FIAT... è finit.
Apollinaire smiles
in the wings – miles
overhead his plane lifts (azure, infinite).

let her skip

DAKOTA HEXAGON

This quiet August day toward
the cusp of autumn.  Green
vine-light in the cavern
where Henry hides his raven-word.

That empty chair in Dante’s sky-
deep rose, for all the hoped-
for prophets, emperors...
& here’s Sophia’s little throne (my

dancing-master’s rosy resting-
spot).  Let her skip
fearless across the ship
of state, her toy basilica, questing;

the Greyhound of the Lord, her
vengeance, comes to this –
gray clouds of Providence
replete with rain; a pregnant mother

radiant with clearing day; the shades
of persecution blown away
by ocarinas (clay-
shell turtledoves, dolphin parades).

Ineffable golden Hephaestus-net...
veil of corn fleece over
a West Branch face.  Her
sister in D.C. (Adams duet) –

icon of Miriam & Magdalen,
Dakota hexagon
implicit in the sun
of Washington... cartwheels, Columbian.

This old man goes rolling home

SPRING-STEP

Sunlight glints in flash-of-gold
on blue-gray lashes, curling
sea around each green-
black pupil glancing from cold

Pontus-depths, like lacquered pearl.
Each soul hath such a wild
wee isle – immurèd child
of even-star, whose raven whorl

beams out of everwhirr – bright
innocent prinkster, fleet-
footing the complete
spring-step, so shamrock-intricate;

Tara, Soissons, Iona know
how low she twirls, she droops
before her leaping swoops
a coign... Elijah – let her go!

Light-nimble Columba... thundery-
coot’red Geraldine... – fits
Geraldine, the crown fits
Geraldine!  In a wheel of clay

through the eye of time – in a ray
of light, through a feather-
full of waterfalls... there,
thereLook there!  A catenary

clover-span!  Four-folded spire,
planted on copper penny-
whistle... one milky-
black Eire-eye rose Paycock-fire!

Occasional poem (from Ravenna Diagram)

DARK HEART

A droning of iron chariots on
U.S. 80.  Straight through
Elkhart.  Winnebago
memory (in the amygdala).  One

whisper groans like an oak in Mendelssohn.
Becomes a benevolence,
a shade for Sabbath silence.
Word become flesh (my father’s own

right hand, gripping mine, until
he was gone).  Amygdala,
a tower, a butterfly
net for memory (little

Rorschach mirror-wings); the stone
with the 12-leafed rosette,
with Abraham’s whetted
blade, upheld in time... (atone,

atone).  Little portable temple,
your body (innocent son
of mine) – odd grail-stone
now, for a trial in Jerusalem.

Where they open bronze doors for Jubilee.
Let the land rest every 50
years, in the name of mercy;
let the mind roam in humility

of Franciscan donkey (chariot
of Elijah, sparking fire
of futurity).  Dear
Mary, with your high dark heart...

6.13.2005

from Way Stations:

           from a cave

Such a small voice,
I would not stop to hear;
the sun was going down, and
there were no houses near.

Such a strange voice,
whispering out of the ground –
familiar, though it seemed
unearthly, utterly profound.

Such a sweet voice,
twining my cavern ear;
a vine for water jars, when
all the wedding guests are here.
Spent some more time over the sultry weekend with Stephen Prickett's dazzling book (Words and The Word) mentioned a couple days ago.

He's getting into the relation between Romantic & Victorian poetry, & the 19th-cent. movement toward cultural centrality of prose fiction & realist novel.

He does this in terms of the paradoxes & problems of Biblical translation, & the enormous impact, on British poetics & romantic poetry in general, of Bishop Lowth's studies of Hebrew poetry in the 18th cent.

Sounds rather abstruse, I guess. But it's not. His focus is on Wordworth, Blake, GM Hopkins, & esp. Coleridge. Tied into a remarkable reading-back of the various translations of the story of Elijah's encounter with the "still small voice" in the cave. (I have a little old poem along that line, which I will post here later.)

Coleridge's emphasis on the power of the imagination-intelligence to shape perception; of human language as a "subordinate logos" of the (divine) "communicative act" which is Nature itself; & the corollary - the necessity for imaginative participation (re-making) in any reading.

How the trinitarian formula of transcendent Logos united with incarnate person contains a logical paradox (like the "set of sets which contains itself", or however it goes : the infinite God appearing inside "his" own finite creation). (Prickett illustrates with the Saul Steinberg sketch (taken from Escher?) of the two hands, holding pens, sketching each other.) And how any literary representation of reality comes up against a similar paradox.

The prose realists evaded these paradoxes by simplifying the problem of representation. The stories are cast in a form of (desacralized) "objectivity" which reifies the world. (cf. George Eliot's humanist recasting of religion via Feuerbach.)

I thought I noticed faint echoes of some of these issues in Ron Silliman's latest attack on "School of Quietude" representational poetry (remarks on Clark Coolidge, etc.). He sets up a false dichotomy and a false choice between representational and non-representational poetries. If we inhabit some form of Coleridge/Hopkins "communicative cosmos" - within which particular things in nature speak their meaning or Adamic name - then the basic motive of poetry-making - whether "abstract" or representative-narrative - will be to communicate.

When I was working on the long poem, I thought of it as anti-prose, anti-novel. The ghost-shaman Bluejay mixes in with real places & local history. Stubborn Grew narrates the crisis-collapse of its own narrator. I think I have always been aligned with Coleridge & Blake - that there is some mission for poetry which merges with religion & the sacred. Breaks through aesthetic & cultural categories.

sorry, I'm really rambling this morning. back to work...

Not sure why this old octet from the Reagan era came to mind today. something to do with the election. I've posted it before...

My countrymen, dreaming and drinking down
the livelong day in your smooth Cadillacs,
Americans made of nostalgia, playing the clown
on roads past the high school railroad tracks -

go on, play the radio, shoot for the moon;
your little boy up from grasslands not for hire
is building a tricycle in the backyard, and soon
he'll step inside a brand-new chariot of fire.

[my father being a patent lawyer (& someone still fascinated with games & gizmos), I grew up in an atmosphere in which inventions were important. I remember my brothers and I (1960 or so) floating the first prototype of the "frisbee" around the yard.]
