they were playing Benjamin Britten

LEAF-MURMUR

In the peace & quiet of her little room
with cactus & late poinsettia
on the sill, she’s growing quieter
herself, just one step from the tomb.

They were playing Benjamin Britten
on the radio, his Moonlight
from Sea Interludes.  Slow
breathing, like tides come in;

the pulse of one high cresting wave;
flute-shrieks of gulls.
Her strong deep swells…
receding now.  She curls concave

into her wheelchair, brave head bowed
(the pride of life, brought low).
Her potter’s wheel, slow
spinning, rounds her own clay into cloud

as in the Garden of Gesthemane
all-powerful God
knelt to his own rough mud
fleshing star-fire to flinty harmony.

The wheel of life, how she runs down
at last!  This shadow of herself
feigns sleep, feigns prayer.  Only
the fleeting elfin smile remains her own.

Stalin, Akhmatova… terror & grace,
beauty & ugliness meet
in the grave.  A life’s complete
that hears leaf-murmur through a face.

guarding the garden

painting by Phoebe Gould (ca. 1992?)
GREEN CORN

Half-moon tonight, like a silver flask
of molten lava.  On this date
George Washington was translate
(1799).  Here’s his life-mask :

fine profile.  Merging in white clay,
like a peaceful moon.
Landlord, when all’s said & done.
Valley Forger, sensing Californ-i-ay

in the green corn of his plantation
garden.  Grace Ravlin
etched that evening scene –
sweet Virgo in Virginia (dawning nation).

The myth rides with the Indian.
Scars limbs of slaves.
Everyone behaves.
A raven-crumb plummets into ocean.

Something’s lugged back, out of clay...
the lunar wilderness.
Innocence, blessedness –
Sophia twirling in the calm of day.

Like young Hal emerging from a golden egg
(his father’s legacy).
Attainted crown, see –
buried bones in Resurrection (Pig’s

Eye) Cemetery.  Across the river,
on Lakota Bluff.
Two swordsit is enough.
Gesthemane is haunted, Indian-giver.

gash of a calm current

CALM CURRENT

The daggers of the sumac (plum-
red, maroon) accent
the gash of a calm current
between these knotted forks of autumn

cottonwood.  The knot itself
an ellipse, like bole
of oak (hollow hole...
screech owl?) – for an emerald elf.

The Green Man in the green glade.
Prehistoric American?
Or an Irish cousin.
Gardener in the garden (maid

Magdalen’s Gesthemane).
The river is a strong
brown Gould.  Unstrung
out of New Hampshire (Alleghany?

Ohio?).  Or maybe Negus, Ravlin...
leading the flock mesmerized
to Iowa (West Branch,
shepherd).  Buzzing a Quaker violin.

We have dawdled long enough
in Babylon, children.
The labyrinth (Parisian)
folds Theseus into a trough

much like a Mississippi mirror
dreamscape, umbilical
(& smoothly paradoxical).
We mumble into the interior.

banquet at the end of time

PUSHKIN MOVE

The banquet at the end of time,
the invitation read –
the living & the dead
to celebrate.  This pantomime

of solemn feasting they perform
beneath cavernous timbers
(burnt resinous embers)
foreshadows that preternatural storm

of joy, tasting our expectation –
when Eli’s empty chair
so hopeful (floating there)
is overflowing with affection

once again.  As we well know,
observes bright Magdalen –
beseeching, in the garden,
gardener (raw moon of woe).

& what it all may mean for Hobo
Hank, lazing out
his salvation-boat
conundrum (Solipsism, ho!)...

Can it be can-do canoe?
If anyone thinks they
know anything (See
St. Paul!) they’re in Pig’s Eye

sez he.  My inconsequence
is like a Pushkin move;
chess is like love,
government... clear as Providence.

Jonah was a fisher of men

NO THING

Hobo couched on his frozen bench
& felt the dream of summer
flow through his mummy-
shroud (cocoon from Danish trench).

Everything from no thing,
mused the broody dagger-
raven, plastic bagger
limping toward immortal spring.

Must mean some one looking out
from furled oak leaves.
No one conceives
how close a whisper knits the plot.

Poverty’s a hollow ache.
Lento, lento, the fast
approacheth – one last
Sabbath before Easter break.

The one I love’s an almond slip
between Pharaoh & Laius.
An airborne edifice,
the bubble in the level’s grip;

the fisherman’s égalité
gal from Gesthemane
surfacing lambent sea,
coulombe crooning Liberté.

One blinding black diamond
clothed in octahedron.
Orange junk lantern,
Hobo’s caravel flamande.

shade of fig trees

OAKEN ARK

I remember the tall shade of fig trees
on Observatory Hill
in Sydney, their colossal
spread feet lifting leafy memories.

The diamond hologram glinting
upstairs – the Southern Cross
a silver doubleness,
a micro-mirror (winking, hinting).

Dante in Ravenna, on the coast
of swamps & tamaracks
the scars of Whites & Blacks
scorching his palm (a sulfur-host)

felt a light flute-breeze ruffle
his conch-shell ear
whispering draw near
beheld Matilda waltz the Buffalo

(an aboriginal design
painted on granite
for Woodpecker-flight
framing two Thunder-twins benign)

& plumbed the gravity of clay
that wheels so slowly
through mortality
toward candescent kiln-fired Day

of Jubilee   the metamorphoses
of starfish realms to stars
the green & gold pillars
of corn & wheat   Georgina’s

laughter in the new-mown fields.
So her green-almond eyes
drew Alighieri to Vitale’s
arc of Paradise (welds

souls into an infant baptistery,
a fan of everlasting
life).  Interesting,
murmurs iconoclast Henry

Hobo   but I would bend the lens
slightly   enfold the ray
into a Bay of Biscay
alphabet soup   Beguine begin-agains

based on an anchored oaken ark
of milky bread & wine
the whole human communion
in the sun of mnWmn (spark

from a Galilean jewel of light).
Inside the delicate crystal
gently circling... still
potter’s whirl from infinite night

around the whisper gallery
Twine Monastery
pregnant humble glory
of Francesca (Piero’s poverty)

leaves mutter in the sea-breeze
just beyond the orange
bridge   Georgina’s Grange
the dusty gardeners   Maria sees

Gemstone of Paradise

NEVA-LAND

The poem is for lonely you
amidships (I-&-Thou
nailed coign to prow) –
& for that grubby neighbor too

next door (George or Georgina
with the garden hoe).
A solitary lamp-glow
lingers in the old cantina –

in William Blackstone’s study (man
who went to live with...)
– uphill, on the forest path
to Middy Wewe’s blithe fountain.

George Washington spins in his grave
to see how we behave
without a mind to save
us from ourselves.  Thee must be brave,

& true, & kind, & dedicated
to the perfect good –
that global neighborhood
that shines, wid’ green & delicate

kiwi-glow, beneath the rind
of blind & brutal night.
A callow grail-knight
stumbled on it once, near Samarkand –

spry Wolfram rings the tale – &
like an unknown soldier
leapt – O soulman Prospero! –
from here to Skye (in Neva-land).
