on the North Shore of the North Star state

SOFT KISS

Not far from Berryman’s Witch’s Hat
in Prospect Park, off Arthur Ave
Henry beholds spring showers lave
his plague-burnt Vale of Josaphat

(in Minneapolis).  It is a hard Lent
& shrunken plain to see –
April trundling mournfully
to graveyards.  Brash head bent,

hobo Henry Hal recounts his crimes
(near Purgatory Chasm,
in Newport).  Hopes a chrism
helps redeem his own end times

along Humility Way – the icy treason
of a lodestone heart.
His mother’s art
pierces also, beyond reason –

those 4 unsoldered quarters of clay tile
where Henry & Francesca swim
below a swirling rim
of Gooseberry Falls (old Ravlin file)

in the blithe innocence of marriage
unbetrayed… unmade,
not yet.  Like Longfellow glade,
or negative of Dante’s personal stage

(Circle of Lust) the two of us
will splash, forever smiling
in that riverine, beguiling
clay lost Paradise of faithfulness

                   *

& O the hubris of Superior Prince Hal!
To think he’d play the alpha male
to Berryman, beyond the pale –
snow-bent J. Beerust, in his dream-corral!

My clay ticks slowly on its glitter-wheel
toward kiln of Judgement Day.
But you might take another way,
Kidron – follow the foamy V of keel

into that Ocean River of the galaxies;
gaze up into the Royal Arch
where smile-canoe arcs
over candescent happiness... frees

hearts & souls into the wholeness
they were meant to seize!
That Charity of charities,
that source of every brimming goodness...

the grace of Miriam-consent (to give)...
true North Star of the Sea!
Friend Berryman would be
beside me here, in this infinitive

to live – an evergreen, emerald
eternity of growth –
an exponential for a moth
(or butterfly) to find – New World

born from the Old, as wings from chrysalis
when Spirit strokes like Thunder
through clay rings… & under
your rose aye of Providence (soft kiss).

gash of a calm current

CALM CURRENT

The daggers of the sumac (plum-
red, maroon) accent
the gash of a calm current
between these knotted forks of autumn

cottonwood.  The knot itself
an ellipse, like bole
of oak (hollow hole...
screech owl?) – for an emerald elf.

The Green Man in the green glade.
Prehistoric American?
Or an Irish cousin.
Gardener in the garden (maid

Magdalen’s Gesthemane).
The river is a strong
brown Gould.  Unstrung
out of New Hampshire (Alleghany?

Ohio?).  Or maybe Negus, Ravlin...
leading the flock mesmerized
to Iowa (West Branch,
shepherd).  Buzzing a Quaker violin.

We have dawdled long enough
in Babylon, children.
The labyrinth (Parisian)
folds Theseus into a trough

much like a Mississippi mirror
dreamscape, umbilical
(& smoothly paradoxical).
We mumble into the interior.

Mary Elvira Ravlin Gould, potter & flute-player, is of course a major background presence in my poems.

"Time flowers on the lips of whispered clay."

My grandfather's tile, from Barnett & Record Co., which he put as stepping-stones in backyard (River Road) around 1927. Still there, I discovered last week. (Mentioned in "dream-vision" poem "Grain Elevator", here. )Posted by Hello

Today is saint's day of Guillem de Gellone. One of Charlemagne's lieutenants, fought in Spain; memorialized in French chansons de geste. Entered religious order, founded monastery & school at Gellone, in southern France. According to some historians, descended from Jewish nobility from Baghdad who migrated to Narbonne. A distant relative, I think, I like to think.

William Blackstone was buried on Study Hill, Cumberland, RI on this date in 1675. The next day his property was burnt to the ground by a band of King Philip's men.

- "Talking of corpses," - the Consul poured himself another whiskey and was signing a chit book with a somewhat steadier hand while Yvonne sauntered toward the door -"personally I'd like to be buried next to William Blackstone -" He pushed the book back for Fernando, to whom mercifully he had not attempted to introduce her. "The man who went to live among the Indians. You know who he was, of course?" The Consul stood half toward her, doubtfully regarding this new drink he had not picked up.
- Malcolm Lowry, Under the Volcano

Malcolm Lowry lived in Vancouver. Yesterday digging through the files I found the first letter (I think) I ever received - a postcard from Vancouver, from my grandmother Ravlin. Colorized photo of twins in papooses. I was 14 months old. Tomorrow I'll be. . . sheesh.
