chaired in the adamant of Time

WISDOM-BENCH

He was muttering in his sleep the whole time.
Of things seen & unseen,
emblems of earth & heaven – like
a man in his grave, waiting for his bones to rhyme

again.  His friend Hobo came from Ohio
whistling Carl Sandburg tunes,
Vachel Lindsay refrains;
his duds were dusty, raggedy, his health so-so;

he only loved the calm of the constant River
& the wide distant plains
& the ache in his heart.  Pains
of hard living made him smile (it goes on forever).

He himself was an old Yankee man.
Some Quaker dream tilted his mind
to the redemption of a world unkind,
& mad with rage – a providential plan.

The dream came out of West Branch
one fine day – the black marble
of Isis (planted at the Memorial)
a kind of emblem for her Wisdom-Bench

chaired in the adamant of Time, as Walt
declared.  & we are Hagia Sophia
with a million eyes, maybe… a sigh
instilled by otherworldly grace.  A bolt

of lightning from the Thunderbird.  Thus
Wisdom is justified in all her children –
settled on her lap of twinkling obsidian
beneath the steady circling of milky stars.

for Notre Dame

PACIFIC ARC

April air, so clear today.  The quiet sea-
blue sky.  Clear as that great bell
ringing in Paris – for the swell
of hearts, for Notre Dame (in her infirmity).

In Minneapolis, as everywhere, the plague
confines each to monastic cell.
For contemplation, just as well…
for dreams, these patchworks made with rag.

My own dream surfaced in a film – Deserto Rosso
(M. Antonioni).  Monica Vitti, in
moss-green – damaged angelo-mammi;
her little boy, gone lame (povero bambino)

at her ceramic studio; those indecisive men
full of morose indifference
battered by commercial arrogance,
industrial violence… & the wistful omen

of the desolate cathedral (windswept, hollow
Sant’Apollinare).  Alighieri
stood in this nave once; calmly
pondered the tall wraiths, gleaming in shadow –

Justinian, & Theodora… all the martyrs
in procession, holding their lamps
lifted, unmoving… lambs
in a moss-green meadow, by the still waters.

Just so each poet carries in their heart
like robin’s egg in oak leaf nest
a Paradise, made roughly manifest –
as Langland’s Imaginativa would impart

dream-visions of the human Temple
hidden there.  So Henry Church
would make a supreme sketch
on local limestone, an American example –

one Venn diamond, rimmed with Jonah-pen
borrowed from humble Maximus
whose subtlest partitas mass
the radiant matrix of divine & human

(union of the two-in-one, distinct
without division or confusion).
Curl, then, into this acorn
nest of light, this Rose of every precinct –

Apollinaire & Mary Magdalen   together
witness at the sepulcher

*

Grace attentive   through Hell-sulfur
Love revive   on silver loon-feather

When the local materials begin to coalesce
& the collage takes shape & form
& the design of Maximus, his dream
translates (in waves) our constitutional mess –

for that incarnate Union of the two-in-one
implies a like distinction between
Church & State – salvation
neither by Emperor nor Pope, but won

deep within each living human soul
in liberty of conscience
loving freedom of response –
so that the invisible Churnagogue is whole

& multi-confessional – universal – hidden
like Micòl’s almond canoe
in the garage, in Ferrara (you
know what I mean).  So we begin again

where we ended before – in dreams
in shadow-lands of fiction
in the feathery benediction
under that granite palm of Roger Williams

in the old town of Providence, the rose
rood of Rhode Island
with an origami flower-bend
beside the humble stream of San Francesco

flowing to sky-tinged Gulf, flowing to Sea
under a firm Pacific arc
lit by candescent sunset spark
far off there   breathing   with you & me

least coin of Union provenance

WING-BEAT

The American poem makes do with what’s
right there.  Like a penny in a well
or Peto trompe l’oeuil.
Reminiscences of 1865… hook for hats

on an absinthe wall.  Unlike electricate
sweet Alighieri, burbling Italian
honey-rhyme into his Pythian
pylon – a vertical refulgent ziggurat,

as opposed to our stretched-horizontal
(catenary) system of safety
nets (dangling from Frisco Bay
to DC).  Quipu knots of Neanderthal

design – z-twist, s-twist in a 3-ply
twine, spun with dry grass
or pine bark from Abri du Maras
anchoring light matrices of solidarity.

Ah, nested Rose of Dante’s alta fantasia!
Here lies a homely Providence
cresting seven hills, dense
with ignoble Henry’s disjecta membra.

Plain facts of what happened, what was
made manifest in clay.  Bearing
pinned-up mementos (sprung
Ford’s Theatre tickets… Jimi Hendrix

poster?) – cornered in a coign
of copper maize, a corn
maze.  Dropped in a forlorn
well off North Main St. – least coin

                    *

of Union provenance – silver Penny’s
golden meaning (Love
welded to treasure-trove…
chaste equilibrium of all equalities).

The gift that unfolds at the heart of things –
Francesca’s golden poncho (Peruvian)
spun at Sheep’s Clothing (on Wickenden)
for Dave the California bard (who springs

from Rhody roots himself).  Gift
that is already there in the earth,
shining quietly… an Ocean mirth
salted with grief & everlasting life.

In the heart of remorse & gratitude
rose memories well…
the flaming throne planted in Hell
transmuted to Paris park-bench habitude.

I know whom to thank for this Rose Jubilee.
Stony Magdalen, in Galilee
rolled away, set free
the Rabbi of a rescued Julie-bee.  Recovery!

He was already gone, but she showed us
the way.  & the catenary
curve of Argo’s aerie
twinkles with lights, up there – a million eyes

suddenly flash joy from blue-black sky
pouring Milky Way & Ocean Stream.
La vida es sueño – life is a dream;
the wing-beat of Thunderbird only a sigh.

ANCIENT MELODY

The air so clear, & the evening moon
a bright silver penny
as in the children’s story
walking along my mother’s old lane

(River Road).  Looking back through time
toward rust-bronze Penny
glinting in the well… you & me,
sweet riverbend friend (Rose I. William).

On middle C, in common time, imperfect
we will tap the ivories –
some Memphis honey blues
for Milkman, gone today (perfect

in charity).  I remember how we clung together
in the greenhouse, long time gone.
Now distance is the quarantine… yet
only temporary, Pen.  We’ll meet somewhere

by snowflake relativity – that Providence
where every soul has dignity,
disintegrated from the sea
of Ocean River (Osip’s salience – a

wee raznochinets bubble of pure silvery glee).
The sky.  So clear tonight.
Transparent memory.  A light
chord lingers in the heart (soul liberty

the ancient melody).  Freedom, equality,
respect… humanity.
Like Newport’s Jeremy – buried by
John Gould’s oak, in Hemel Hempstead (age 90).

SOFT KISS

Not far from Berryman’s Witch’s Hat
in Prospect Park, off Arthur Ave
Henry beholds spring showers lave
his plague-burnt Vale of Josaphat

(in Minneapolis).  It is a hard Lent
& shrunken plain to see –
April trundling mournfully
to graveyards.  Brash head bent,

hobo Henry Hal recounts his crimes
(near Purgatory Chasm,
in Newport).  Hopes a chrism
helps redeem his own end times

along Humility Way – the icy treason
of a lodestone heart.
His mother’s art
pierces also, beyond reason –

those 4 unsoldered quarters of clay tile
where Henry & Francesca swim
below a swirling rim
of Gooseberry Falls (old Ravlin file)

in the blithe innocence of marriage
unbetrayed… unmade,
not yet.  Like Longfellow glade,
or negative of Dante’s personal stage

(Circle of Lust) the two of us
will splash, forever smiling
in that riverine, beguiling
clay lost Paradise of faithfulness

                   *

& O the hubris of Superior Prince Hal!
To think he’d play the alpha male
to Berryman, beyond the pale –
snow-bent J. Beerust, in his dream-corral!

My clay ticks slowly on its glitter-wheel
toward kiln of Judgement Day.
But you might take another way,
Kidron – follow the foamy V of keel

into that Ocean River of the galaxies;
gaze up into the Royal Arch
where smile-canoe arcs
over candescent happiness... frees

hearts & souls into the wholeness
they were meant to seize!
That Charity of charities,
that source of every brimming goodness...

the grace of Miriam-consent (to give)...
true North Star of the Sea!
Friend Berryman would be
beside me here, in this infinitive

to live – an evergreen, emerald
eternity of growth –
an exponential for a moth
(or butterfly) to find – New World

born from the Old, as wings from chrysalis
when Spirit strokes like Thunder
through clay rings… & under
your rose aye of Providence (soft kiss).
