set to sound

SIMPLE SPACE

Henry was just an American poet,
not well-known, born
in Minneapolis… a plain-
speaking, ordinary place, a cold spot

on the planet.  He had his talents
& his quirks – his great
advantages, pensive disquiet,
the serious focus of his mind, his diffidence…

but none of these things mattered in the end.
Poetry is neither marketplace
nor museum.  It is a simple space
for flighty conversation, set to sound;

a fatal stage, a public theater
where fantasy rings true –
YHWH appears to you
disguised as sister, holy fool, butler…

anything but king (or slave-herder).
King David plucked his harp,
made his obeisance sharp
& clear – YHWH is holier

than I, or any man on earth.
Henry drew back the curtain.
In his poem, all was done –
la vida es sueƱo… from Fort Worth

to Dallas is but a short drive.
Righteous ones must die
until the message (IN RI) bears
fruit – honey flows from her beehive.

chaired in the adamant of Time

WISDOM-BENCH

He was muttering in his sleep the whole time.
Of things seen & unseen,
emblems of earth & heaven – like
a man in his grave, waiting for his bones to rhyme

again.  His friend Hobo came from Ohio
whistling Carl Sandburg tunes,
Vachel Lindsay refrains;
his duds were dusty, raggedy, his health so-so;

he only loved the calm of the constant River
& the wide distant plains
& the ache in his heart.  Pains
of hard living made him smile (it goes on forever).

He himself was an old Yankee man.
Some Quaker dream tilted his mind
to the redemption of a world unkind,
& mad with rage – a providential plan.

The dream came out of West Branch
one fine day – the black marble
of Isis (planted at the Memorial)
a kind of emblem for her Wisdom-Bench

chaired in the adamant of Time, as Walt
declared.  & we are Hagia Sophia
with a million eyes, maybe… a sigh
instilled by otherworldly grace.  A bolt

of lightning from the Thunderbird.  Thus
Wisdom is justified in all her children –
settled on her lap of twinkling obsidian
beneath the steady circling of milky stars.

to look fear in the face

ROSE BATEAU

March trudges wearily this year
toward April.  The robins
tremolo their violins
with plaintive warbling.  The end is near

for many.  Gaunt doctors, nurses
wait upon the Emperor…
his unrelenting petty terror
carts off families in makeshift hearses.

Now courage & compassion race ahead
to look fear in the face –
offer to stand in place
for fainting visitants, among the dead.

Is life a dream, or mere nightmare?
Behold her profile, bent
over the bed… his silent
fellowship… the grieving watch they share

with every tremulous shocked sufferer
(who must foresee the end
as lungs contract… distend).
Is life a dream?  We wonder, wonder.

I see a silent servant of servants,
across whose labors galaxies
& all their glory graze
in circles (up above our sacraments

& merry games).  I see her figure
shine like sunlight on brown river;
glance at Rabbi Live-Forever;
smile from rose bateau (Dream-Builder).

your barbecue of fibs

WORDY COVENANT

& how could that heart-shaken man
(Jay Berryman-Osiris) dive
from a bridge, the eve
after Epiphany?  Say, Jack Ravlin –

Granddad – 3 blocks from your house?
& on your birthday?
How?  Evil holds sway
as dream molts into parody (inverse

remorse, or nightmare fallacy).
Estrangement reigns
when Minotaur maintains
the lie that makes untruth reality.

Demonic hatred be the coin of death.
The grass stuffed in the mouth
was greed gone south
coffered Osiris longing for mere breath.

That auctioned ship, Old Ironsides
the Constitution of a rifled
dream – must she be stifled
by unruly piracy?  The manger hides

her refugees in the hull of your ribs,
old mothership.  Your heart
where 13 adders start
is like Coatlicue – your barbecue of fibs

is just begun.  Your John Paul Jonah
swings his wordy covenant
over his head (adamant
evening, stony crossroad... hallelujah).

Hamlet in the death-canoe

SCARLET WAX

The dreamer, mapping a circling cosmos
of milk & honey, starlight
& sweet fire... like Brightman’s
integral Person – with tables of Moses

in their cedary bark of mutual promise
lending salty substance
to halting hesitance
of reason (while the heart says yes).

The dreamer assembles the disparate realms
into crescendo-tango.
Hamlet in the death-canoe,
precipitous peripeteia – helm’s

Charon-pilot, planting the scarlet wax
of his father’s dread seal
for a doom they must feel
anon (political axe prickling their necks).

The tables of the covenant
written on our hearts –
sine-waves where channel parts,
Osiris-Jonah reassembled (US to haunt).

Old Ironsides, your canny constitution
oxidizes under termite siege.
The man of lawlessness will wage
perverse destruction like a weathervane

cut loose... yet that rust-bound ship
still bends toward Providence –
native Thanksgiving-sense,
red-corn grasshop (at clipper clip).

the American dreamwork

NAVE RESTORATION

The American dreamwork seems to grow
of itself, like a vagrant
acorn’s buried descendant
branches roots into veins of air, so –

leaving yourself behind, then
as in a park playground
at dusk, all around
echoing shouts of kids having fun

within the green lamps of those trees
& the circle of daydreaming
grownups, their evening
rest emerging at last – the iron wheeze

of the swing-set beginning to mesmerize
with its creaky metronome –
& you have a premonition of home,
like a matryoshka doll of paradise

or a houseboat nested in a boathouse.
American as they don’t get?
Anonymous as a planet
without name, yet – Isis, Osiris...

A figure stands at the dream door.
They put the body there?
Now it’s not anywhere.
He gone, she gone (to tell them more).

Hobo Ulysses glides toward New Orleans,
St.-Jeanne of the Delta,
Jonah.  Coracle fella,
acorn Cap.  Nave restoration’s what it means.

what you might believe

kids climbing oaks on Arthur Street, in Mendelssohn, ca. 1958 (by Mary Gould)

PACIFIC SOMERSAULT

Childhood in Mendelssohn... my mother
helped us build an igloo.
Spiral parabola
of ice-blocks, framing up a doma

seamed so fine, snow-translucent –
its arctic arc an image
(Inuit bird-cage)
of the revolving deep blue firmament.

Complex reality’s concave enigma.
Mirror-image of
a winecup-face... dove-
Jonah diving from the ship – Mama!

– spewed out on shore by Moby Dick.
The Q in Queequeg, or
Coatlicue – the semaphore
of Joseph’s coat, turned inside-out (thick

darkness shrouding every mountain-top).
Fine rational weave
of what you might believe,
while dreaming (temple veil, torn up

from bottomlands to Memphis crown).
A knot in the cucumber twine,
Apollinaire in umber vine...
a fishnet made of golden fleece.  One

lifesaver-lead sinkers the weight
of the whole wide prairie –
like Cathedral Mary
or that flute-bone poet-fishbait

                 *

goes by name of Buried-Man’s Henry
– bright grandson of the late
star Morning Star, whose crate
floated Twin Cities to the Gulf (see,

Tommy, how the dead rise from the grave).
All 12 disciples died
by violence.  The Ghost plied
her woodcock back & forth, & wove

Ariadne’s safety-net (one grey thread
bent like accordion file
from Ocean vortex, mile
on mile).  Behold how us dead

rise from fleecy loam – your dream.
We dwell in a matrix-
creation – Beatrice
skips from Florence to the throne (beam,

Natasha, from your vault-chariot)
& Juliet will navigate
the high bar of the Gate
d’Orange (Pacific somersault).

The vertical of Dante’s Pole
balances Henry’s hobo-
equilibrium... so
the message in the oak bole

from the King of starry Heaven
sets a gyroscope
in motion – Henry’s hope
& Giuliana’s love (sweet corny leaven).

Dream song of reality

Just read Joshua Rothman's New Yorker profile of philosopher Daniel Dennett, his lifelong pursuit of a materialist, non-religious, un-mystical theory of consciousness.  Dennett steps out as a brilliant, original thinker, with an impressive science background (biology, mostly). And as an admirably enterprising DIY jack-of-all-trades.

I'm neither scientist nor philosopher.  But I have, like many another, puzzled over the question of "mind", this ancient (back to Epicurus, at least) divide between idealism and materialism.

Just a few off-the-cuff reactions to Rothman's Dennett.  He strikes me as a curious, searching person, whose stance toward nature is essentially that of an engineer.  He's interested in the mechanics of process - how things are done.  This is obviously necessary for science, an attentive approach which leads to discovery.  But it seems ironic that Dennett's view of consciousness - as a continuum, shared with other animals and living things - is not that different from the classic "chain of being" perspective of Aquinas (for one example).  That other animals exhibit a "sort of" consciousness (Dennett's term) - an evolutionary preview of the human mind - parallels the chain-of-being picture, only without the traditional hierarchical fence between "Man" & the rest.  For Dennett it's a flow.  & it seems he has focused passionately on explaining (theoretically) the how of it : how our sense of consciousness could arise from purely physical, evolutionary developments.

This is, I would say, the blind spot in Dennett's vision.  There are limits to the mechanical, analytical dissection of reality offered by biology.  Whatever conclusions he can draw from such analysis only serve to justify his prior conviction of the non-existence of an over-arching God, Spirit, or Mind - something which cannot be "proved" by such analysis anyway.

It seems to me that aesthetics & poetry, as well perhaps as some branches of philosophy, can offer a more valid perspective - because they are rooted in a sense of holism, a synthetic sense.

The poet and the artist register the fabric of the dream.  The theologian (or philosopher of God) articulates the analogical/anagogical synthesis.  Materialist attempts to disprove the reality of Mind or Spirit lack the tools to achieve it, first of all - and, secondly, are probably asking the wrong question.

The question, maybe, is not how, but why.  Why does this immense spectacle of the universe exist at all?  "We are such things as dreams are made on..." - but why?

I've always found the theological answer the most satisfactory.  Why the wonder of the cosmos?  The truest answer : it's a gift.  Why human consciousness?  The truest answer is a kind of geometric/analogical one : human consciousness, which governs (imperfectly) life on our planet, demonstrates an analogy - a sort of geometric parallel - with the divine Mind that governs (ineffably) Reality as a whole.  And history is basically a spectacular drama, unfolding the destiny of that governing mind or spirit, working through humanity toward some kind (or kinds) of definitive expression - call it "Providence".

elephant burials

SOFT RIVERBEND

Snowflakes crystallize, unique
& elegant.  Mandala-
knots (of ice).  Then follow
the sun, like dew in a raven’s beak.

Into the rain, the river, Ocean.
Heart’s slow dilation.
Sunken beams of pain,
of petrified love... beyond reason.

Light tracks of salt, the tears
of trees.  Sacrament
of speechless element –
elephant burials.  Fallow years.

Inarticulate, dumbfounded soul.
The knowledge of the end
in each soft riverbend –
her fingerprint, on clay bowl.

Dreams gather, so.  The dream.
A curly wave of sheep
threading from the deep
time-meadows.  Trim trireme,

bearing a casket wrapped in fleece –
matrix of Paradise,
grail-caduceus
lifting each Jonah to release.

The air murmurs immortal Spring;
your friend is limping sweetly
by your side.  The tree
of Galilee is blossoming.

Rock Candy Neva-Neva trail

LIMESTONE PROFILE

The little white cabbage moth
& the dragonfly, following
Hobo down his bumbling
Rock Candy Neva-Neva path

beside the river.  Past the bridge
nearly finished, almost
restored... some ghost
dance out of Petersburg (knowledge

from chaste visionredemption
blooming like a morning
gloryeverything trembling
at the dawn of timethe Galilean

tacking in the wind across the lake
zigzagging like a monarch
slanting orange-black
over sumac, milkweedto be forsaken

& his cup to take)...  So the dream of a girl
is the grail of a dream, when
startled Magdalen
beholds him (where fern-worlds unfurl).

Like a fiddlehead figurehead, a nettle
Beatrice, the dream ramifies;
what was there always
unveils, the whole sweet kernel-coracle –

as Hobo finds his bearings in the smile
of a limestone Ursus profile,
in the lofty Milky Whale
of a firefly Jonah (rainbow trail).
