in the entrails of the nation

RIVER-SCOW

So Henry hearkens to the sea-wash
over his meandered house.
From District C to Minneapolis
his terramara whorls, to Washington

& south to Frisco, lap after lap
of wave on wave, sea-green,
serpentine.  A Berryman
for Julian’s Bower (Juliberry nightcap,

mayhap)?  Osiris, in the entrails
of the nation?  Sleep, now
microcosmic river-scow –
everything grows smaller in the whale’s

rib-cavern, everything a miniature,
dioramic Minnesota (at the
end of the last knot, minute-
man).  Cold as a Viking vulture-

sepulture.  These bricks might save
the planet, Henry mumbles
to the museum baubles
in his sleep.  & then her hand will wave

to him, from waves of his dream;
Columbia the sister-dove,
his Tyche-tyke from above...
over the Father-of-Waters with a beam

of smiling light.  & suddenly the vermilion
shades atop Sunset Mountain
& the orange orangutan
threatening our rusty tub of human

communion (Old Ironsides to you)
are dissipated shadows
in a rosy dawn... & Henry’s
crown rests in her ark (shalom, J-rue).

what child is this

HOLIDAY MUSIC

The empty duplex is quiet tonight
though not completely silent.
Drumming in the basement –
Khaled rehearsing our old duet.

From different corners of the same planet
immigrants & refugees
hasten to the Twin Cities
as to gemütlich haven or warm magnet.

& history is like a palimpsest of pelts
trapped in somebody’s woods
before there were neighborhoods
or streetlights – only raw scalps, rotting guilts.

When we were that City on a Hill
of our imagination –
special paragon of Creation,
establishing law-&-order by God’s will

on earth.  But it wasn’t so beautiful.
The Magi rode by camel
across a parochial hell
subject to Herod & his trumpets (terrible);

the angels remained invisible, mostly;
& both the Ark of the Covenant
& ironclad Ship of State
came to resemble that drafty, mangy

manger itself.  Where Mary lay
& her shivering baby sighed
& Joseph almost died
of inhumanity.  Hush little baby, don’t you cry.

only piano in town

CLAY BARN

6-yr-old Sophie curls up in the lap
of grumpy old Grandpa
to listen to Grandma
read us the story of Jingle Bells.  Slap-

happy Mr. Pierpont, of Medford Mass.
watching 12 skating sliders
skim frozen circles (laughter’s
elves) runs next door to Mrs. Waterman’s

– only piano in town, to test his melody
& the rest is history
she’s ready for bed, isn’t she
Sophie’s growing up fast, Henry

The tall Norway pine at the prow
of the duplex, like a mast
climbing up toward one vast
frosty galaxy, with its Xmas lights in tow

(Grandpa’s dad’s project once, long ago)
they don’t glow anymore
but the duplex lies at anchor
like every ark, Egyptian barge, Ferrara canoe

like every nave, like every churnagogue,
like every Celtic coracle –
round as a 4-leaf miracle
of Columba, or Mayflower Compact (ship’s log

of covenanted sheep’s union);
round as lightswept dome
of Hagia Sophia, or home
sweet home (clay barn, Mississippian)

the otherness of the poem

RIVER-VEIN

The turning year brings its anniversaries.
Sunken ships in the harbor.
My fleeting image of an arbor
green on the slope at Golden Gate – Julie’s

last day (her father Jim’s birthday).
Today the sun glistens
as if through Temple linens;
pearl beyond price, merciful Gateway...

The otherness of the poem is merely
the cosine of a conversation,
Cuz.  Light trinity of sun-
moon-star, embedded in clay lips (dearly).

As America is balanced in the scales
by a feather from Byzantium,
so a Pipestone eagle-drum
summons a kingdom borne on wing-sails.

Covenantal arc of steel
at navel of the earth;
gangway to spoke-berth
coralized beyond our iron wheel.

& from a pearl-eye in the mandorla
light beams to every hamlet-
brig across the planet –
melting the blood-red wax of Danelaw

& Washington, pouring dark wine
into each muddy river-vein,
lofting all-human
fellowship again (curving J-spiral sign).

Hamlet in the death-canoe

SCARLET WAX

The dreamer, mapping a circling cosmos
of milk & honey, starlight
& sweet fire... like Brightman’s
integral Person – with tables of Moses

in their cedary bark of mutual promise
lending salty substance
to halting hesitance
of reason (while the heart says yes).

The dreamer assembles the disparate realms
into crescendo-tango.
Hamlet in the death-canoe,
precipitous peripeteia – helm’s

Charon-pilot, planting the scarlet wax
of his father’s dread seal
for a doom they must feel
anon (political axe prickling their necks).

The tables of the covenant
written on our hearts –
sine-waves where channel parts,
Osiris-Jonah reassembled (US to haunt).

Old Ironsides, your canny constitution
oxidizes under termite siege.
The man of lawlessness will wage
perverse destruction like a weathervane

cut loose... yet that rust-bound ship
still bends toward Providence –
native Thanksgiving-sense,
red-corn grasshop (at clipper clip).

have you never loved & suffered?

MOON-BEAR

Hobo crawled out of a hollow log
like a moon-bear from hibernation.
The River held him in suspension
between breaths, heartbeats (in a fog).

Have you never loved & suffered, Henry?
Do you comprehend soul-agony?
He was a Man of Sorrows, he –
acquainted with grief – like a lost penny

(Lincoln?) at the bottom of a well.
I have, Hobo.
If you want to know
I too be tarnished imago, two steps from hell.

Like who.  But I carry this flashlight
handed me by Lightning
Littletree one morning
(way back, in Providence).  It all right.

Or going to.  Everything you see
is a fresco-dream,
June-bug – the triple beam
searchlights all round (Imogen Dovie

in your mind).  I see you grinning,
Beatrice.  Bunny Rabbi
and Ignatz O’Lamb, too (hi).
This IGNIS NATURA RENOVATUR thing –

will it spin in the sky?  Little Bear,
Big Bear?  In a sloppy gyre
you may bespiral somewhere
sometime, Hobo... in your underwear?

King David hopped like a rabbi
alongside the canoe.  Micòl
was like... O well.
The pure fire is restoration, Jun-eye.

otherness of the Someone

IRON WHEEL

Her fingers fondled Red Wing clay
on the circling wheel
into Northwoods bowl
or Mexican flowerpot.  Wheels, say,

within wheels... microcosmic canoes,
Arks of the Covenant...
even Charon’s punt,
Henry (we who have passed

over Lethe).  The woman with child
in her apocalyptic
mandorla, chased by Dick
the Drag to the edge of the wild

(up north, near the Boundary Waters,
in the Iron Range, near
Itasca).  Fresco a veneer
across Ravenna beams – Jordan River’s

sleepy patron god.  Sort of like Hobo
witnessing the fire-dove
skim down Cottonwood Cove
& settle on the shepherd kid... just so...

but I just don’t know.
Iconoclasm sets in,
considering we’re human –
liable to make it up as we go.

The otherness of the Someone.
Your friend, your judge
(merciful – but won’t budge,
won’t fudge the facts).  Solomon

petitioned humbly for wisdom,
sensing the dire burden
beyond each king’s ken :
the destiny of Jerusalem

                *

under a blood moon of violent men
& the everyday mayhem
the grinding paroxysm
of atrocious cruelties – shifting pain

to the weak (convenient scapegoat,
ordinary poor).
Even blindfold Synagoga
might remember something critical, something

our mosaic Pantocrator forgot.
A little gray-brown moth
settles on Hobo’s mouth,
like a fingertip.  Hush, seraph.  That

maybe we are Hagia Sophia
with a million eyes.
Solomon was wise
to be humble before the Shekinah.

& Hobo was a mumbling bumbler
more like a river than a man
more like clay than person.
& Thunderbird was a rumbler

in Red Wing, churning the rusted wheel
until it sparked like gold;
helping her to fold
the wet clay of America on steel

braces... evenly rotating... Source
to Delta... Sea-Rose
to Golden Gate... flows
through the arch... Mud-Morse...
