magnolia blooms

MAY-MONTH

Again, the quiet of a cloudy day
in Minneapolis.  May Day
in quarantine.  This is the day
maidens in flowery garlands would ply

their threads around the blossoming May-
pole.  Hobo is not Falstaff, I say –
he is the King of May;
a blooming almond be his rod of sway.

*

Meanwhile, archaic Hen the Rain King
by circuitous path hath circled
back to River Road.
His early neighborhood – passing

his mother’s house, her father built
– that Master of Grain Elevators
(Ravlin, J.H.).  His crop rotator’s
resting now.  River-tongues will gather silt.

An old man hoists his memories
upon his back.  Their weight,
grown heavy, will grow light…
Grace is a salty providential breeze.

I hear the whisper of her crane-
bone flute – the drone
of one trompette marine…
Guillaume’s grande dame will rise again.

*

& I sense Osip’s revolving sisters,
melding gradually their
sarabande.  Rose flowers
share circumference (O lento tenderness).

*

I never want to leave this house.
Orioles sing in the forest
under their shade palimpsest…
(oaks’ rattling snare-susurrus).

*

A fresh breeze brings the May-month in.
The sisters ring their double wreath.
The young hawthorn on Fisher St.
is blooming pink.  The almond

in her dark eyes glows, her smile
of Sheba-Shekinah… the lady
of the Song of Songs (spry
tree of Galilee, in Rhody Isle).

*

The gawky prehistoric gingko
Granddad planted is
still there (at 1615).  Its
golden Memphis fans billow

in breezes off the Mississippi.
The asphodel, acacia…
the acorns greening, high
over the house… & now I see

her – cartwheeling across a field
like some sapling tornado!
Sophie or Pocahontas?  O
that Gravesend kid – her diamond shield

my royal seal!  Her acorn coracle
my Isis barge – her eye
my Argo’s midnight sky!
Across the Black Sea of a world-debacle

shining (congruent) one American ray –
my Henry-church, our
Churnagogue… one flour-
cattedrale – out of spiritual clay!

*

Like simple San Fran in Frisco
he crost himself, at height
of orange Golden Gate –
where Juliet booked… O

her last, self-cancelled flight.  & Henry
built a rude crossroad
in old Rhode Eye.  Sold
on Roger’s fine distinction – worldly

profiting & holy soul-seeking be not
the same.  Yet they are wed
by law-abiding God
into a single providential knot –

that normative & innocent new world
as old as children underneath a tree
chanting together of a chaste reality
where Love is as the Ocean – pearled

in tides of light (beneath the moon,
beyond the moon).  This charity
stands like a tall pine tree,
from earthy root up to invisibility… one

Union of pure dream-substantiality;
good will, reflected in the hearts
of humankind – with all our arts
in-woven there (O graceful tapestry).

*

The little magnolia on River Road
by Granddad’s elegant abode
unleashed her winter load
of fluttery wings (Primavera mode).

Persephone, Eurydice go underground
& Beatrice to the sky…
a grain of wheat must die
so spring’s magnolia blooms abound.

May Day… the worker bees unite.
The earth itself is in labor
fired in the kiln of Evermore.
Communion loaves of clay ignite.

Everything spins in the green matrix.
Liberty & justice, equity
& equilibrium… an origami
fold of love & intellect – deep Genetrix

a whirl of fiery faery feet – Elohim
twirling on galactic rim
with ocarina Jonah-hum,
to glaze the grail-stone with her hymn.

Sophie was making rivers on the patio,
& found a black-brown woolly bear –
small furry embryonic caterpillar
searching for a leaf to call ground zero.

Henry was looking for an oak-bole too.
At end of May, at Pentecost,
on Dante’s birthday, JFK’s… lost
Restoration RI zone?  Hagia Sophia? – YOU.

chaired in the adamant of Time

WISDOM-BENCH

He was muttering in his sleep the whole time.
Of things seen & unseen,
emblems of earth & heaven – like
a man in his grave, waiting for his bones to rhyme

again.  His friend Hobo came from Ohio
whistling Carl Sandburg tunes,
Vachel Lindsay refrains;
his duds were dusty, raggedy, his health so-so;

he only loved the calm of the constant River
& the wide distant plains
& the ache in his heart.  Pains
of hard living made him smile (it goes on forever).

He himself was an old Yankee man.
Some Quaker dream tilted his mind
to the redemption of a world unkind,
& mad with rage – a providential plan.

The dream came out of West Branch
one fine day – the black marble
of Isis (planted at the Memorial)
a kind of emblem for her Wisdom-Bench

chaired in the adamant of Time, as Walt
declared.  & we are Hagia Sophia
with a million eyes, maybe… a sigh
instilled by otherworldly grace.  A bolt

of lightning from the Thunderbird.  Thus
Wisdom is justified in all her children –
settled on her lap of twinkling obsidian
beneath the steady circling of milky stars.

they were playing Benjamin Britten

LEAF-MURMUR

In the peace & quiet of her little room
with cactus & late poinsettia
on the sill, she’s growing quieter
herself, just one step from the tomb.

They were playing Benjamin Britten
on the radio, his Moonlight
from Sea Interludes.  Slow
breathing, like tides come in;

the pulse of one high cresting wave;
flute-shrieks of gulls.
Her strong deep swells…
receding now.  She curls concave

into her wheelchair, brave head bowed
(the pride of life, brought low).
Her potter’s wheel, slow
spinning, rounds her own clay into cloud

as in the Garden of Gesthemane
all-powerful God
knelt to his own rough mud
fleshing star-fire to flinty harmony.

The wheel of life, how she runs down
at last!  This shadow of herself
feigns sleep, feigns prayer.  Only
the fleeting elfin smile remains her own.

Stalin, Akhmatova… terror & grace,
beauty & ugliness meet
in the grave.  A life’s complete
that hears leaf-murmur through a face.

like an 8-ball in a canyon

HELIUM BALLOONS

Thus the poem is a free agent,
loosed from its cannon
like an 8-ball in a canyon.
We could go on – what they meant

you know.  Dante was getting on
when he stopped by Sant’
Apollinare.  The slant
of loneliness caresses its panopticon

of painterly rainbow eyes & forms,
afloat overhead
like a Macy’s parade
on Thanksgiving Day (enormous

helium balloons of adoration
under an umbrella
of matryoshka nesting-
dolls, like an infinite function

in rose granite aegis, arcs-
over-arcs).  In her eyes,
the grace of God buys
time with molten agape-caritas.

Jesus emerges from the cave.
Mary faints in the garden,
dream bent back again
to Gödel (his suspended-7th grave).

Her incompleteness theorem
is like Easter in 2020,
always there already
(gleaming ring, undying diadem).

at the end of summa

SURSUM CORDA

These heart-shaped leaves of the cottonwood –
yellow-black memories,
your excavated face
from the dark archive of branded blood.

Leavings from an old mosaic, my Psyche;
yearnings you magnetized
like a Tombs Angel surprised
me from despair – desire molting to fiery

grace.  Loose, unloose these cords,
sister Cordelia –
churnagogue Jonah,
heart’s winepress of happy candle-words.

I hear hands clap together
this little light of mine
I’m gonna let it shine...
through the funhouse mirror

mend you ways, O Minotaur
sacre du printemps
bête pour FIN DU TEMPS
so you may stand with sisters

brothers   in the great congregation
at the end of summa
when the threads draw
taut (1132)   Rabbi, Rab Ravelin

sursum corda   my clay Columbia
as out of the flaming kiln
the milky waters spill
& your glad-sparrow brother sighs   selah

Rab Ravlin was a weaver bred

SILVER TRACK

Summer’s gliding toward those falls.
The sumac swords are rusted
iron.  Below the nested
locks (St. Anthony), swift sculls

are water-spiders on a dragon’s back.
Hobo Larva... Henry
Woodpecker, monarch (maybe)...
all worm, Noman?  Whose silver track,

mercurial, serpentine?  I was
the wolf in Sheep’s Clothing,
tearing Ariadne’s weaving,
trading lux for lechery (luxurious);

I was the shadow of the waxing moon
purling beneath Pearl Harbor
Day – casting her bitter
part across the bar (Frisco Lagoon).

Now crickets rattle in the looming dusk,
a chorus, waiting in its wings.
1132, the catgut sings –
our heavy grave (in one cicada husk).

Only the lightest antigravity
can spark the dark menorah
in the heart of King Henrah.
Lonely almond of sheer pity

welling forth Father of Waters...
what was Magdala stone
becoming human Union
(steely pontoon, welding 4 quarters).

shout it from the rooftops

CLEAR PINE

Hobo was playing solo crane bone flute
like an airy trompette marine
as he watched Henry puzzle on,
muttering his thumpy rhythms en route.

It’s the Union, the Union, Hobo intoned –
as your eye is clear & light
in the pasture breeze – right?
We wrestle with this violence, shark-boned

with vicious avarice – yet Sophie-gentleness
may rule at last, a restoration
of your soul’s volition
the true child-wish, mild & harmonious

as that lamb-lily in the tiger’s eye;
as Sophie plays her middle Cs
at center of the keys
& swings all 88 into the sapphire sky.

Hope is our natural state – for a grace
bestowed, unbeknownst to us.
Lost & found – like that Tombs
Angel, swimming from the marble face

to lift a prisoner out of the dust –
Rebecca Salome Foster, spun
by Bitter-Lamb into the sun;
drawn out again (by Jeremy Ann) at last...

So Henry clutched the muddy wheel
& turned it, counter-clockwise;
from oceanic Providence
to clear pine river-source... you feel

                       *

it turning, turning... into San Francisco
& a rainbow pigeon-throat
blent with rainbow trout
all natural wonders for that footloose hobo

full of ecstatic spiritual deliverance
marked on his feet & palms
from walking, chanting psalms
all the way to the Delta – joyeux entrance

into azure Gulf, American trumpets
O when the saints
come marching in...
& the clay wheel turns bronze serpents

into flame-gold lambs, whose linking thread
folds limbs into a March on Washington :
where they will wash away corruption
& the violence greed breeds – the dead

shall climb up from their graves, & dance
the Beguine – the beginning again;
the restoration of all men & women
in the clay river-light of Cahokia’s immense

plateau – across Big Muddy from the sky-
blue angle of the Gateway Arch –
that silvery canoe, echoing the arc
of one invisible & omnipresent loving eye :

Aye-Aye of Providence.  Elliptical wafer
lifted from humble bowl...
Hagia Sophia (universal
soul) wearing her limestone life-saver.
