it's only gravity

SEA-SALTS
… an astronomer consulting the stars to-day would announce
that the most favourable day of the year for weighing light is May 29.
                                       – Arthur Eddington, Space, Time and Gravitation

The brightness of the light shines more or less
in various fields of stars.
The Hyades, for instance, are
magnificent – rays bend around the sun’s eclipse

according to their gravity (1132?)
& their displacements make
a parallax, will shake
the skies – like that black hole in Virgo

where the whole cosmos in its photon rings
as in a coelostat on El Principe
looks back from a funhouse mirror
mired in the cryptic gloom one Friday brings

(in April, in RI).  So when Prince Hobo Hal
sets out upon the Ocean stream
paddling his gyroscope-trireme
his dim reflections shade his violet pal

Jean-Jo, behind their glare.  It’s only gravity.
They glide along past green Cahoki-o
beneath a soaring Gateway prow
toward topaz Gulf (ineffable Mardi Gras)

where Jean-Jo’s mild humility
(like unknown soldier or
grey pebble on the shore)
emerges – lightweight solidarity –

& swathes him in a dove-grey cloud
of granite apses, limestone
spires… an airy congregation
of sea-salts (& makes his father proud).

up in Montrose Park

PINE-SMOKES

The war to end all wars was done.
On May 29th, 1919
Sir Arthur Eddington
tested heavy light, suspended

in a thread around the moon-black sun;
so gravity bent clay
toward refining accuracy.
Black Elk extends to six directions

silent gratitude & recognition,
just as an icon speaks
in speechless pine-smokes
or a painting glows with valedictory

emotion.  Around the summer solstice
rose-phosphorus sunset
seals the monuments’ regret
in Washington – western promise

magnifies & coalesces, in a microcosm
(up in Montrose Park,
at Avon Place, by River R).
That armillary zodiac, or star-prism

revealing violence, imperial dominance
(diagonal to its redeeming
countersign) – entangling
mn-mutter, amid all circumstance…

sweet Angel, levitant above the cancer
of the Capital; fleet-
footed Evening Star, bright
Pocahontas (waterlogged Delta, triangular).

love is a subtle mode of gravity

PEACEABLE REPLY

Love?  Love is a subtle mode
of gravity, persuading
everything into its ring
via reverse-magnetic motherlode.

Implicit ground of adoration –
centered in that other
sprouting up like heather,
unaccountable (& yet akin).

The Petersburg raznochinets
who wrote, maybe
we are Hagia Sophia
with a million eyes… completes

that Galilean one, who said
you are light of the world
& so like sheep into fold
he goes, smiling into Ya-Neku.

So like that sonorous Adagio
building gradually upward
on frail threads, the sad
clown walks into her thundercloud

shadow.  Like Mary Magdalen
she follows the mild voice
of one who mediates
all force with dove-modulation –

her cooing sing-song tilt of wing-
span balancing the red
& blue with a rusty rod
of iron – his wand out of Sing-

                   *

Sing, his foot-pedal, bruised purple
as small Rhode Island
violet (one grain in hand
touching the resonant key of small people).

She bears the crux of all martyrdom
across the political spectrum
like Mater Dolorosa on some
Syrian plateau of desolate Rom;

yet every child’s candle flickers yet
on the anniversary of statehood
& Providence, in the law-code
charted for Restoration Day (kismet).

When Rome fell, & sheep scattered
into milky constellations,
whirling light-grains
penetrating countless catastrophic

neighborhoods of pitch-black space.
In the darkest of Dark Ages
the ratio on parched pages
scratched by severed stump of Maximus

shone like Einstein intuition –
Man is imago of your Divine
infinite plenitude… sign
lofted into deepest void-perdition;

there is no sovereignty like this.
To be the peaceable reply
to every trumped-up tyranny –
we all God’s children, sang the Empress.

Rab Ravlin was a weaver bred

SILVER TRACK

Summer’s gliding toward those falls.
The sumac swords are rusted
iron.  Below the nested
locks (St. Anthony), swift sculls

are water-spiders on a dragon’s back.
Hobo Larva... Henry
Woodpecker, monarch (maybe)...
all worm, Noman?  Whose silver track,

mercurial, serpentine?  I was
the wolf in Sheep’s Clothing,
tearing Ariadne’s weaving,
trading lux for lechery (luxurious);

I was the shadow of the waxing moon
purling beneath Pearl Harbor
Day – casting her bitter
part across the bar (Frisco Lagoon).

Now crickets rattle in the looming dusk,
a chorus, waiting in its wings.
1132, the catgut sings –
our heavy grave (in one cicada husk).

Only the lightest antigravity
can spark the dark menorah
in the heart of King Henrah.
Lonely almond of sheer pity

welling forth Father of Waters...
what was Magdala stone
becoming human Union
(steely pontoon, welding 4 quarters).

MIGRANT ZONE

“But,” she added, “a tribute that kills thousands of birds?  Is that really
what we want?” – NY Times, 9.11.19

Little Alex was in love with them.
Would run out to the “woody
area” (floored with heavy
twisted vines) & note their thrum

of peregrine wing-calls; run back, report.
He was 20 when the Towers
fell.  Now he’s in the painters’
guild – swings from scaffolds out

in Portland (surfaced a new public school
this summer).  Everyone
knows someone so, dangling on
the perimeter of gravity (lead’s rule).

Edgar Brightman says, each body
is an etching of God’s mind –
that Personage who’s fond
of persons that we are (might be).

It is some Berryman-Osiris dream
of emerald Ireland, or
Mannahatta... out of mire-
bleared violets, one twin-beam

(ineffable, 4 miles up into night).
The glare attracts birds
(like glamorous words
of bright adhesive poem).  Raven, kite...

– bad omens, harnessed by our own
self-heightening memorials.
Yet... all my trials,
Lord.  DOVE LIBERATES LOVE’S MIGRANT ZONE.

autumn in my heart

SWEAT EQUITY

Like falling from a winter bridge
in Minneapolis.
Absolute zero-ness.
11.32 ft/sec (straight-edge

it, carpenter).  A little life-saver –
gold bubble of air
in the wooden measure,
Chris (dolphin fin-waver).

The little tree, the little almond
eye of Providence.  A
sort of weathered prudence
from rough planks – sweat-bond

of every laborer in vineyard
or in field – Georgia
footprint, selah
in every cemetery, bard.

Like this confusion of nature
circulating good will.
Invasive humble
habitat, Roma imprimatur...

signature of spiral J
(Ojo de Dios,
owl o’Sophia)
out of the oak-knot, honeybee.

Lightning furnishes the room.
So fall into my heart,
Julie (where start
the roses on their river-loam).

milk of All Souls'

DARTING GLANCE
to Reinhard Genzel & Andrea Ghez

For decades, the rival astronomers
– Genzel, male, & female
Ghez – aimed instrumental
eyes toward the heart of the cosmos –

muted piano key of the galaxy.
Genzel flung his telescopic
javelin (atmospheric
annihilator) toward a dusty

shoulder of Chiron (the man-horse,
Sagittarius) while Ghez
gazed from the Andes,
waiting, measuring her course.

From the center of the Centaur
the whisper of a signal,
as from Eye of Bull.
As if from his maze, a Minotaur

murmured – beckoned toward his lair
in the galaxy’s grave
(her gravity-cave,
light-shrouding tomb of Milky Way).

As if across the Black Sea
the shadow of the Argo,
like a winged hippo-
horse, shaped signal-symmetry –

echo of those sunken galleys
encrypted on the salty
floor – an Ariadne-
thread from Sagittarius

                *

as on a line from eye to Ghez
its waver-tremor moved
from Memphis to beloved
son... a bullet-train (just MLK’s).

We’re standing on that floor of sound.
The black hole marks an end
for time & space – a frond
of palm marked Jonah, on a ground

of milky whale-spume.  There
he stands, in her eye
of hurricane – not angry,
mild – her Son of Man, her heir

of air, from navel of gravity
humming his servant-
song (for a new advent
of justice, lovingkindness, charity).

Where Ocean River shapes galactic
horseshoe lakes (whorls,
eddies of fresh worlds
and clear water) your prophetic

Nazir chants his invitation
to return to life – joy
spiraling unceasingly
from springing restoration

of all things; eternity
undying, in that heart
where all the rivers start –
her darting glance, from middle C.

Tran-Van-Tay

NILE ROSE
                          for Tran-Van-Tay (i.m. Joseph Duemer)

The pomegranates on white linen
loom like autumn leaves.
A red that fades, grieves...
yet glows out of its midnight background

blue.  Like a chokecherry, or
some other berry, man.
Viet-American
(another long-gone war).

We were on honeymoon, in Paris.
Aphrodisiac,
that dried-up sack
of seeds (maroon, vermilion).  Osiris –

will he climb out of the grave again?
The grave of gravity
(1132 ft/sec) – for me?
One catenary arc (trompette marine)

– one thread cut from the labyrinth
of frightened Minotaur
(mother-nightmare).
One Ariadne-clue, one length

of yarn, your sheepish hermitage;
C-magnet of the knot-
king’s smoking calumet –
curled fringe of Jonah’s whale-image.

Out of the sea, the rudder swam.
Rhode Island... oaken
wisdom’s perihelion.
Rose Nile, set sail for gentle Vietnam.

beneath gray Bruegel sky

WAVE-CRADLE

Crows ink beneath gray Bruegel sky.
A line from A to B
zigzags spacetime – see?
So raven vanishes in Noah’s eye.

Between two points, a yawning Ocean.
Infinite intensity
of black-hole density
draws yesterday into its spin.

What is your personal specific gravity?
The poem is gray pebble,
obscure soldat (trouble
for no one).  Ordinary Smitty

whose greatcoat pocket holds an agate.
Lodestone of a jay
tracing King’s Highway
into the calyx of a ruse (checkmate).

It is Path P, the chi-rho
branch – diamond
mandala of almond;
Black Elk milk road (ey yo).

Love is the tread between twin pillars –
only a glance of weightless
spiderweb.  Inverness
of vernal tenderness... wind, stars...

when the bow sways in its wave-cradle
& Ithaca, Iona, Eire
lift like green fire
Skye-perpendicular – familiar grail-dreidel.

Weldon finds his shoes

O FLOWER
For a Tear is an Intellectual Thing

This evening light over the sink
& clutter of Mom’s pots
dish soap, what-nots
stillness of an eye that doesn’t blink

pupil of an unseen commonwealth
Lincoln-logos of a realm
Time cannot overwhelm
where Walter nurses back to health

Hart’s broken farfalla-tower
& Weldon finds his shoes
again   & Berryman his
balance on that bridge   O Flower

Joy   Out of these winter fields
where Bruegel-raven   zig-
zags   over leafless twigs   &
Guillaume’s pink turban   slowly   heals

Your graven images of gravity,
Henry   my autumn fall
1132   a burial
at sea   the perspicacity

of buoyant Jonah   one grey gull
white-feathered underneath
lights on a wave   breathe,
Dove   lift down from empty skull

my ashen diamond   the snow skims
sparkling   under the sun
& from bright gatherings one
Flamant beams   whose warmth redeems
