that hexed hexagon

PRICKLY ROOFTOP

Only a light whisper of April snow
feathers the riverbank today.
The wind-serpent will flay
with rippling wings its own mud-brown

flow.  The cottonwoods lean overhead
like ribs on a canoe.  Gray veins
of some cast-off snakeskin.
Glass fane of Great Worm (empty, shed).

Where are the springs of yesteryear?
This April curls from cold
& back to cold.  From cold
to cold – inhuman, viral (some Shakespeare

Villon).  So the chill indifference
of animal aggression marks
its seal on each snowflake.
Each one unlike (unique monstrance).

So who invented this immaculate snow?
A mind of winter?  Or
a dreaming Melchior – his
clouds on high, his Bethlehem below?

We sleep, we wake… like soft snowflakes.
We drift, we float… we land
& melt upon a child’s hand.
The soul is like that dark green pine, makes

rough & prickly rooftop – root foundation
for each spindrift, wayfaring
Romany light-traveling
human earth-heart time-migration

*

– so hear the art then, O spiraling
hearth!  Martian enfoldment
like arms of Odin, bent
around himself – whole tree corralling!

For Snowflake is that hexèd hexagon
of heaven & earth, joined
in your heart, coined
Abraham – red copper of the gun;

that regal object-dart of adoration
– tangled boomerang, returned
upon itself – urned
at the apex of our celebration;

the bread & wine of every sacrifice
offered by universal Everyman
each time she lifts the can
for mite or gold doubloon… our price.

The light snow sweeps across Ireland
& Minneapolis-St. Paul.
A sweet lamb looks from wall
of van Eyck emerald, almost human (sand

or salt will reveal her, underneath
Mississippi varnish).  Flowers
are eternal, soul-power
is substantial… MELEK shall bequeath

his welcome-gift of bread & wine
on his way to Memphis
for the garbage men.  This
my bodythis my blood.  Lamp, shine.

mini-Mississippi meditation

WINDY CURRENT

They found a body in the broken ice
upstream from Franklin Bridge.
Nearby, JB leapt the edge
50 Epiphanies ago.  Minnesota Nice

reminder of mortality, this cold
Ash Wednesday.  & who
shall rescue me from this
body of death?  You, Lord?

Let each one find you, mighty to save.
My own keeled-over Mardi Gras
diversions end Mid-Barataria.
O rheumy battery of barratry – behave!

Half-sunk, in debt to fraud… Old Ironsides,
our near-abandoned Constitution
drifts toward Mars Lagoon –
graveyard of hulking Liberties, Columbias

I heard Brad Barth, & maybe Latrobe
have shaped a mini-Mississippi
en masse.  Delta recovery
with restoration of the entire globe

– at 1/65th scale, using simulated sand –
in view.  Musk-earthy angel
of Odetta, oversing y’all
sluiceways – my diversions too; your hand

stroking the banjo-strings, your voice…
one grain of sand.
Let not Pharaoh’s demand
deter you from your bitter cross

                    *

a better choice, for man nor woman
noir nor blank, there be nought
but this flashing pivot –
fiery chariot, all-bearing, San Franciscan

stigma tattoo – all-loving happy ghost
& live-oak everlasting shade
reconciling all things made
& unmade (windy current, whirling host).

Water currents, pressure & flow
(scale-model of congregated
clover coracle, 200’ x 70’)
up to the Chapel of Eternal Now.

You just want to get in & start playing
with it.  We can (she sings)
no longer accomplish things
by damming things off.  What saying,

Great Spirit?  Hwæt?  There was silence
for about six hours
(prelude to thunderblast)
when ailing Alighieri, heart gone quiet as

a babe, asleep upon her mother’s breast
gazed up into the rainbow dome
at Sant’Apollinare.  You come
to me gliding, from Sabbath rest

in your almond canoe, Jessie-Jesu…
out of the gemstone casket
where 4 streams exit
like the Nile, from Ethiopia… O Hallelu.

Song of Songs in a snow globe

SWEET SNOW GLOBE

The twin foxes & three pine trees
on honeymoon (in a sweet
snow globe, in Norway).  What
use your Solomonic sarabande, these

loopy solemnities?  & the echoes
far into the motherland
Cahokia to maid’s Gravesend
your Adonai, my Adonis   a Memphis

trial by fire (intricate clay bark
buried in salt harbor).
O serious Nile laborer!
Nephthys, Dark Lady, mark

these fathoms of thy bottomland.
Snow was general over Ireland.
Strum the steel mandolin
then, Mary – plectrum in hand!

We climb out of the clay to shape
this Royal Arch, for St.
Latrobe & Son.  See the faint
wave-trace along its rim (crêpe

for a funeral train; flute-song
transcription).  Grain
melts into wine again –
the living man or woman prong

from earth.  We called it love
& swam into the circle
where snowflakes speckle
dark green live oaks (O crooning dove).

bateaux of old Louisiana

SPEECHLESS GIFT

It was 50 years ago now, Julie.
We were with the sleepers
in a dream, the jumpers
on a fogbound bridge – our odyssey

a sleepwalk of necessity
from day to day.  America
was manifest, a replica
of heaven for the taking – see?

This land was made for you & me.
But you & I sank down
into Pacific depths, my clown,
so young, so sad, so gone.  Ahey

ey yo.  It’s in the bottomland
or on the ocean floor
you’ll find the coral door,
the seashell, Pearl – your eye-in-hand.

Like Joan of A. moored to a smoking pyre
or O. still singing in Leviathan-jaw
bateaux of old Louisiana
meet like rose petals in a western choir.

& the Word-made-light, that sank into the clay
sprang up again, as speechless gift
in the dome where every tongue will lift
& feed upon her painful vine (his dying-day).

Our ghost-dance, Julie – tiptoe in a dream.
JB whispers, Eurydice!
& circuiting the dome with me
hums from Rez graveyard in a Joan A-frame.

I dream a general restoration

CONTRA-DANCE

The early ice on the Mississippi
forms a maze of frozen
eddies, a chaos of cotton-
wood leaves on glass, all dark & ripply.

Somber November drawing on
toward JB’s Janus-mouth.
Slight man, moth-
light, leaf-blown from iron span.

I dream a general Restoration
cousin, cuz.  Because
our love that never was
lies crypted in a deeper congregation

of earthworms... Earth-life...
this pumpkin-celebration
where each seed is someone
like a minuscule canoe (collective

buoyancy, anchored in agape).
Not that Cyclops-utopia
ice-locked with Satana
imperador del doloroso regno, nay!

Rather a contra-dance of Earth
& Sky, a balancing
of stillness with evolving –
clay vase molded into mirth

by humble presence of the king
(of servant-kings).  A single
molecule of brine (NaCl)
is tabernacle bread & wine (of everything)

                            *

& you will meet her in the ordinary courtyard
of the everyday (she’s Everywoman-
Everyman).  This is a vision
of figure & ground.  She’s walking toward

you, now... like Roger Williams, stepping through
twin pillars on the Terrace...
Providence, a place
of mercy & discretion (fair & true).

I cannot put it into words, this waltz
of swirling time & high
eternity.  It is the sky
spanning the sea.  It is the salt

in everything; it is the molten dove
dive-bombing into clay
who joins you in a sway
of hurtling dancers (Milky Way

a-sarabanding, up above).  I cannot
put it into words.
The brutal violence
(stone-hearted ignorance) surds in a knot

of self-destruction, planetary waste
& You must turn & repent
cries San Francesco, bent
upon his imitatio Christi (feet laced

with scars).  It is the Via Francigena.
You will walk back to the river
sped with such a pulse... her
springing from the graveyard (Magdalena).

the stubborn Acmeist

AMERICAN THING

The way a stream flows around a piece of granite
rough gray in the water, winking
with rose quartz, mica (splintering).
So the stubborn Acmeist would honor that

which is, that which exists.  & Osip
would agree with Oscar Cullmann
as to the meaning of Redemption –
it’s already happened.  So right worship

is a thing of joy – ample gratitude
for being, & the hope
of Restoration (its full scope
a celebration, braiding bread & wine).  You’d

barely sense the almost-infinitely distant
echoes of a first Thanksgiving...
everyone hoisting something
to that scrawny picnic table (ancient

light).  So as we J-stroke forward
let’s return to New Orleans
with B. Latrobe, who kens
the old French buildings there (mired

in mosquito nets & drainage swamps);
where he will follow his own son
to his malarial grave (one
body, bread & wine).  Under yellow lamps

like fireflies in the harbor (swaying,
soaring).  Scintillant mosaic
for one lugubrious Republic
(hopeful, Creole).  Clay American thing.

cloud & catalpa, Minneapolis

Cloud & Catalpa, Minneapolis (Martin Johnson Heade, 2019)

GRASS CLOVERLEAF

Everything grew simpler in that high room
overlooking Jerusalem
when he added up the sum
& gave us his Thanksgiving poem.

The apostolic laying on of hands
was just an afterthought
Mary Magdalen taught
to keep the Presence each one understands.

The knot held.  The silverweb
floresced, in centaur arrow-
shots – from Antioch to
Thebes, up to remotest Gad-Gab

(Ethiopia).  Axled on coffin
of coffins.  Buried deep
as Noah’s ark.  Sleep,
King of Kings (like everything human).

This gemstone of the Southern Cross
shines like diamond
out of emerald
almond – mossy quaternion, grass

cloverleaf (in shape of heart).
That little tree will root
where all the branches start,
where all the rivers roll (sky-girt

perpendicular – little Everytwig
leaning against current)
– unto that iron agent
sluicing the Delta to a brazen fig

                    *

shriveled, dry (as is the way with figs).
Yet Wisdom is justified
in all her children.  Hide
now, O Man – Ouragan digs

into clay.  Rotating so solemnly,
she shakes the bone-limbs
from their joints, skims
lightly over coastal property

– only to uproot, destroy.  Bideth
nor roof nor door, Tornado!
Like the Iron Age you know
twisted to shattering shadow... Lilith-

Crocodile, climbing from Delta
to muddy matrix of
St. Louis.  Scorned Love
twisted into dust-mandala –

substantial b-flat of the galaxies
stilled, played in reverse.
The little tree of Ursus
Minor – little star, catalpa’s

iris-blooms – starts wheeling
counter-clockwise.  Clover
culminates your
integral almond-canoe.  Sing,

Muse, Oblomov-grail of prairie earth!
The great wheel turns.
Jonah’s corn-maze yearns
Restoration... (Miriam’s rebirth).

banquet at the end of time

PUSHKIN MOVE

The banquet at the end of time,
the invitation read –
the living & the dead
to celebrate.  This pantomime

of solemn feasting they perform
beneath cavernous timbers
(burnt resinous embers)
foreshadows that preternatural storm

of joy, tasting our expectation –
when Eli’s empty chair
so hopeful (floating there)
is overflowing with affection

once again.  As we well know,
observes bright Magdalen –
beseeching, in the garden,
gardener (raw moon of woe).

& what it all may mean for Hobo
Hank, lazing out
his salvation-boat
conundrum (Solipsism, ho!)...

Can it be can-do canoe?
If anyone thinks they
know anything (See
St. Paul!) they’re in Pig’s Eye

sez he.  My inconsequence
is like a Pushkin move;
chess is like love,
government... clear as Providence.

where everything is born

GREAT BRIDGES

When summer is a woven synthesis
of differences, a music
of what happens, homesick
Hobo thinks of Providence – yes,

Ocean State – that tiny place
where everything is born.
Microcosm, on a horn
of sea-salt... on a wave of seamless

grace.  There dreamt his dream
of mater Giuliana,
in her moss-green llama-
shawl (Francescan almond-gleam

within Ravenna).  Dante found Christ
in Beatrice’s almond joy;
hypostasis in our eye;
omnipresence of the Holy Ghost.

That fusion in Jerusalem –
gemstone of solid air;
communion of river
& sky great bridges ravel, hem

by curving hem (triplicate
unruffled grace).
Traveling eucharist,
friendship seal... rose safety net...

personification (into human
rainbow) of a humble
kiss.  Gold bumblebee,
sweet Henry-awk... sunken, risen.

ledge of regal limestone

HUMAN PLEDGE

The cool dry tesserae congeal
in Sant’ Apollinaris –
dance, coalesce
into high figures of a royal seal.

Exalted features... recognizable.
Your neighbors (Limentani).
Riding bikes to the sea
to get away from scent of stable

(Mussolini’s racehorses).
That was then; this
is placid Minneapolis.
We’re not like them, of course (off-course).

The constitution of a human pledge
blazons these images
from pencil-boxes... pages
scratched out.  Natasha’s ledge

of regal limestone – living rock,
streaked honey-colored
marble.  Moss-layered
icon, limpid under chopping block.

Our covenants of disputation
rest on implicit ground;
Rhode Island in the round,
an Ocean State of transmutation.

The bond of love is clean as salt,
as plain as day.  We are
redeemed by holy fire.
The one you seek has left the vault.

Whitsun yodeling

SHADY RIVER

Hobo goes with the flow of things,
he sinks into the green
entanglement of vine
& grape, the stream’s faint ripplings.

His logos is a Lincoln knot
scratched into driftwood
while Turtledove cooed
overhead (so reads Coyot’).

The knot binds everything, as with
her singing spine, the Argo
bound over il Mar Nero
Noé’s noeud of adoration (myth

turned moth turned monarch seal).
Echoes from a cave
one vanished brave –
Love’s breadcrumb, who became a meal.

All come to bloom in memory...
as the canoe in the garage
scented with Micòl-image
breathes again inscript in Bassani.

A grail of dew sprinkles the summer grass
with Hobo’s oasis-gems;
yearning no one condemns
uplifted where it shall not pass –

into that monarch-realm of dark cedar
where a thrush warbles
& salt breeze marbles
lilac dusk (by Po-Boy River).

Philadephia harbor

SHADE TREE

Stewart’s old print of Philadelphia harbor
(1821).  The great shade tree
by the shore, so peacefully
imposing.  What’s America for?

The benign bonheur, hovering over
our intricate pursuits
of same.  The one who loots
forcefields of dominance, mon frère,

may never find this canopy
of feathery leaf-
grace, hopeful belief...
for we the people brook no satrapy –

relentless justice of the golden rule
the frame of human dignity;
law’s equilibrium of equity
our guarantee of commonweal.

My own boat pilots back to Mendelssohn
so slowly, through such vast
flat riverlands.  Her mast
a pine tree split from almond Someone

cloudy shadow of a smile (O shady oak).
Your heavy clay, Coatlicue –
the chilly violence you
still portray – fired to a silver spoke

as fine as spiderweb, becomes a sign.
Your limestone epitaph –
a serpentine & fractal staff
fractured for us, broken for bread & wine.

those double doors

DEEP RESCUE

Those double doors of the Baptistery
in Florence, where Alighieri
was restrained from returning.  He
might have admired the mastery

of Lorenzo Ghiberti – that golden river
of perfection, surging from
Eden to Gesthemani... some
inscrutable summa of Prime Mover

spoked in parables of heartbreak
& confusion (Miriam, lifting
both hands in agony).  So bring
what you have to a blindman’s break-

fast, to her Thanksgiving feast.
From the belly of a whale
came Jonah whole & hale
as dolphin-breach (O swift grey beast)!

The linèd forehead of Leviathan
is like your own... therefore
be not dismayed.  Footsore
mule, flinty thin Prophet Stan,

your Livingstone (still at the Nile)
holds firm against the flow
of time – your steadfast glow
upon the brow of them who show.  Smile,

Indigo!  Passage to more than blue!
– these equilibria
of gyroscape... mute
mutualità, below the soil... deep rescue!

Reminiscences of 1865

GREY FEATHER

Today we recall the tall gaunt pioneer
with Peruvian cheekbones.
His fifth scene atones
for all that blood shed in anger

at the righting of wrongs; his brief turn
by the Gettysburg graveyard
consumes, with a perfect word,
our kindled rage in bright compassion.

The creaking panorama of all wars
since Cain killed Abel, here
slows, crawls... Ford Theatre –
whose British farce on Yankee manners

stumbles from play to traitor’s hour.
Dusky similitudes...
old King of the Woods
hung from an oak (in Raven’s power)...

the tragic pattern rotates on a string.
Tyro, dangling puppets
tangled on parapets,
shuffles the script – the play’s the thing.

Your clear-eyed servant laughs his last,
cries, Come to my Thanksgiving
feast!  An overlay of evening
wash soaks its river of papyrus bast

in crimson, indigo, & brown.
Still life.  Peto.
Reminiscences on Yew.
Grey feather you must make your own.

hope is the anchor of the soul

DRY THICKET

The salty bread & wine of commonweal
is not a partisan domain;
it came before Abel & Cain,
magnanimous magma of the real.

Like these green palm-prints in a ring
my daughter planted on a square
of Grace’s linen, whirling there
like burning wings of seraphim (wheeling,

wheeling)... the Power of the universe
flames through a hearth-fire
(undermining empire
with compassionate adhesiveness).

I watched this morning as a lone
bald eagle, gliding quickly
in great catenary
arcs (like Guillem de Gellone

or Joachim, the hermit of Fiore)
mimed curvature of bridge
along that autumn ridge
like a daguerrotype from Civil War –

the process signifying Liberty
teeters twin wings
an unknown soldier brings
to bear (O turtledove of solidarity).

The downward angle of the bird
that signifies nekuia
& kenosis (ah,
bright wings!) so anchoring the word

                    *

she flies – & radiates upward (selah)
that Shekinah you heard
wailing in Ramah (sword
rotating every way)... hey ey

yo, Ma!  Your motherland the Earth
is calling you, Hobo.
Only primordial blue
clay, replicating Ocean birth

can shape the high ship of the whole.
Those human ribs, breathing
from Galilee to Sing-Sing
slip the galley through a needle –

bear Arcturus to the North Pole
via waltz of galaxies –
salve memories
of lost sailors, & reconcile them all.

Hope is the anchor of the soul.
Light seed, planted in soil
of churnagogue, still
twirling on your milky way... scroll

out your almond gospel alms,
Melchizedek... your ray
through aquiline papyrus
lens, through Gilead pine-balms.

The clay awaits your bread & wine.
The heart yearns for it,
through dry thicket
retina of Man – your sappy pine.
