at edge of Gulf, at Mardi Gras

MUSTARD TEAR

So ancient Carnival-time creaks around
Hobo, at winter’s nadir –
up & down the copper
serpent-river, ice to Gulf, from underground.

Seigneur Latrobe & son (masonic
architects) glide on
into their slanted lichen
tombs, below the levee.  Chronic

exploitations, born of lordly guile
condemn brother & sister
to the poorhouse – maybe
forever (never God’s will).  Meanwhile

Mardi Gras Indians from Cajun swamps
tiptoe, sauntering in beads &
feathers, vaunting weeds
beside Big Muddy… spin their vamps,

magnanimous & happy-go-lucky!
As Frazer phrased it once,
the Oak-King was dunce
for a day, scapegoat – to bind three

realms, to decorate the grim
reality of king-dom
(manacled to thrum
of male plumage, sly rhythm

of greed).  Meanwhile us tramps lie in our camps
the ciphered segregation
of a riven nation –
the politic paralysis of frozen clamps

                *

unbroken for a generation
yoking partisans
of limited taxation
with particles of airy explanation.

Yet lo, Hobo! the sleepy sleepwalker
still reigns under the rain…
King Virbius in blue vervain,
Osiris-man of verby us (dumb talker)!

One lone mustard tear of Isis
flowing down the dream;
knit-wit of Union, seam-
by-seam… Columbia, thy hum he is!

& out of one immense unspoken heart
on its wheel of suffering
flies this foam… a sparkling
shield of steely martyrdom – cart

of churl & Charlemagne, Big Bear,
Charles’ Wain – iron hinge
of Milky Way!  Melange
of pipesmoke sacrificial princes, there!

Martin, & Jack, & Abraham…
William & James… lights
winking from Astraea’s height –
sea-foam & flotsam of the cosmic Lamb!

At the edge of the Gulf, at Mardi Gras
Hobo floats to sea, to see…
out of wrath & misery
lamps of justice, liberty – her wings, Noah!

Election Restoration Day

BLACK LAMB

Henry’s diary for a dying day
saunters into November.
After Wars to End All War
will Guillem find his smoky way?

Apollinaire in a Sikh turban
waits out the head wound.
Carried to the ground
from a Paris window (11/11).

Long way to Tipperary, Gil.
Grandpa in his macintosh
in Belgium rain... gosh,
long ago, Captain.  Farewell.

So long.  Today’s Election Day.
Are we of the electorate
yet?  Like a checkmate
in a game with yourself, aye –

Reds & Blues – rival brothers
in mired mirror war.
Each bears a torch
for her – the midnight soul mother,

those faces of benevolent fathers
children carry deep
into their forests of sleep.
Only the branding iron cauters

its contrary mosaics (through the Age
of Iron).  Black Elk
troubles the star-milk
with one royal touch (smoky sage-

                   *

brush sand mandala).  Soft, Selkie –
blue dolphin from Skye...
this mournful rage to die
sulks in the dark heart, MLK.

You must lift it from us, black lamb.
Forever & ever, light
candle through the night –
mass-vortex Gal of each I am, I am.

She smiles through waves, ineffable
Wisdom – heart’s foundation,
coracle of liberation.
She lifted Jonah (willing Abel)

into eye of hurricane –
the diamond matrix,
Everysoul’s six
ways – your dream song, Hen.

Her word burns like a fire in the Book
of Love, her Testament.
What Maggie meant
when she saw the young Nazir look

from the bright eyes of the gardener
& shouted, He is risen!
Out from your earth-borne
everlasting fire, world-fashioner!

So Morning Star whorls her self-sacrifice
& Guillaume flings another jest
& Henry’s safety net
swings sister-dove from rigor mortis.

by the teeth of St. Anthony Falls

SAY HELLO

End of summer sounds.  A surf
of crickets & cicadas
swells into the branches.
Phantom cottonwoods (leaf-

hearts pale yellow, dried-out husks).
Anemic light, grown timid
spooked by swollen shade –
August forecast (autumn dusk).

Henry attends to his North Star,
his Union under onion
dome... tending toward ruin
now.  Anger drives the darkness car.

Sleek starlings yoked in harnesses.
Electronic neon
beckoning Power’s iron
catalogs (bright pigeonhole affinities).

He stands by the teeth of St. Anthony
Falls – a Berryman
apparition, a ghastly John
lingering by fish-scale cutlery

(zombie ice-fishing is reviving
local watering holes,
say Twin Cities
polls).  Barely surviving

in professional cinch, Polaris
remains fixed in place –
kingfisher Falcon-Ace
tweaked by that wench in Paris

                  *

out of all shape, except a heart-
scarred origami –
Guillaume or Alexei
dovetailing it to Jordan-sprite.

So helpless Noah watches his waters
subside.  He turn to Hobo –
Hobo turn to her.  So
child become grain – grain gathers

to child.  On the scandalous retina
of Mary Magdalen,
the Earth rewinds again
as Man – wrath spun to mattina.

I have no rage.  The otherness
of your... your mother-smile.
He lay for a while
on sands of Jordan wilderness,

at peace.  Your American motherland
is an adamant green
Everywhere.  A limestone
welcome-mat (with waves of eye-in-hand).

It was here before we all arrived;
it was not to be won quite yet
by war, but by legitimate
befriending – loving everything that lived.

& only a bum in San Francisco
or homeless reprobate
treated like jail-bait
knows Charity enough to say hello

& happy lovey-dovey Thanksgiving to you

Hobo's New Year Address

VENETIAN GALLEYS

The gentle adagio of these
yellow butternut leaves
like Venetian galleys
cantering down into the grass.

The slim ribs & spine of each
a gilded replica
of that emerald armada
still tethered to its summer beech.

Prophetic microcosm, georgic
farewell speech.  The poem
wavers down to home
so... some big moody Amerique

or bottomland Berryman mound.
Hobo will mutter her.
He misses her forever
sunk by fratricidal wound.

We cannot remain free unless
we recognize each other
in ourselves, bro – so your
Uncle George cries in the wilderness.

Hobo would touch the iron swing,
its rust-corroded spring,
chi-rho, chi-rho.  Wing,
Raven, down to Mexico – sing

autumn’s monitory mirror.
Minotaur must turn anew.
Like Rosh Hashanah, you
shall too.  O Planet, hear.

from Agate Rock

WHITMAN BREEZE

A pink drift of crabapple petals
lights the rust-brown bricks.
Hobo sniffs lilacs
through your gazebo’s flimsy walls

of ragged cedar.  Transparent air
& Saturday quiet;
a tiny spider’s lucid net
shines like platinum from here to there.

His soul’s invisible as God.
His heart beats slowly.
Time in the Family
of Man sways over Land of Nod.

His hammock is a green hummock
where hummingbirds & robins
warble, strum... Someone’s
calling you, Hobo (from Agate Rock).

You loved the looming sweep of limbs,
the creaky oaks in autumn
storms... quick, winter’s come.
The columbarium of paper hymns,

a windy wasp’s nest in your heart,
the melancholia
of sentimental sigh,
chilly memorial... you play the part,

poet.  These lilacs will not last.
Odysseus, in the Sirens’
grip, resists – sharpens
his ears – clings to the swaying mast

                  *

shuts eyes against his blinded sense.
Light tiptoes through, at last.
The shrouded cosmos (vast,
remote) circles a pilot’s evidence;

the pole star of his meditation
lifts into incarnation
(ark of a nation
anchored to her own grave station).

So Hobo’s apple petals scatter
in a spring chaos.
The Minotaur lurks close.
Greed splits matter from anti-matter,

rigid red from angry blue.
These violet bowers
dangling sweet flowers
bend over you in vain, Hobo.

Your dark twin leans from Golden Gate.
Her black hair beckons toward
the deep.  Only my Word
is closer to your heart, shipmate

your heart, & hers.  A violent order
is a knot of pain, a riddle
of ingratitude.  They fiddle
while my planet burns, smolder

in contemptuous hate (for neighbors
not their enemies).
Mauve Whitman breeze...
salt loveliness of tide’s martyrs.

ELEVATOR MATRIX

An eagle gliding motionless
& swift under the rain...
a message from the sun
outside my window.  Inverness

beyond the clouds, it says.  Dauntless
Dante beheld a double wheel
like Charlie’s Wain, meal-
sifting Hamlet’s dead-end eddies

into Ariadne’s crown of yellow
maize (Paradiso XIII)
at the center of the sun;
Dominican, Franciscan, we shall go

along with Beatrice too,
into that Minneapolis
where incognito Jesus
is a twin St. Paul (aboard canoe);

from White Bear Lake to Resurrection
Cemetery, we’ll unbury
Berryman & Mary
Magdalen right now – a Raven

intersection at Jonah & 4th,
a Jubilee bird-fest
out of the cosmic nest.
Jerusalem is raying mirth

from every corner of the universe;
the gray hide of a mule
hides one God-Jewel
gold-sprinkled fiery agate-cosmos

      *

spiraling like fingerprint
of Everywoman, every
man.  The ordinary
ferris wheel begins to glint

with light most cosmopolitan –
green emerald of soul
freedom (personal
live-oak of Okeanos – constellation

of the Showy Lady’s-Slipper).
Be careful how you tread
this living woods of dead
leaves, sprouting crocuses – your

difficulties are not partisan,
your cures are neither red
nor blue.  The crownèd head
of King George, or the plowman

trampled underfoot by Mammon,
or the young stranger, mortally
undone by poverty,
her kids tossed into pauper’s prison

by our favorite mythologies...
we’ll mingle in the great
grain elevator matrix,
where the brightest of celebrities

& most anonymous of soldiers
meet.  Before the stars fall
through the vortex – Love
wingspans our last full measures.

he talked in sign lingo

COPPER BEECH

Late crickets from low crevices
scree high morse code
along the River Road,
mourning what vanishes.

The trestle bridge shoulders its iron
rust refrain.  Hobo,
Henry rehearse their slow
converse – where’s Bunny Rabbi gone?

He talked in sign lingo, for fun;
smoke signals over Pipestone
bearded the Old Gray One
whose windy glance was made of sun.

The bards were babbling nonsense
around the Ink Palace...
forgive their lack of grace
whose pride is their inheritance.

Meekness is the key to peace,
a mule named Franky said;
our mutual Day of the Dead
fringes each cot with golden fleece;

both enterprise & government
rest on bone shoulders
of the poor – our diverse
attitudes were never meant

to drive us to unpeel the Union.
Pensive eyes discern
gray beech limb’s copper urn
of reconcilement (smiling veteran).

like Don in Key West

milkweed palms

DOUBLE-DECKER

Hobo lounged by the great gray Ocean
River, his old hide detached
a little from his mind,
like Don in Key West, his one-

time winter host (at the Q Motel).
Distanced a little from the
whitecaps, red & blue,
that molder to a stucco frieze of Hell

sometimes.  He remembers wild violets
that peek beneath gray toes
of an elder copper beech, whose
crown shades Providence; those roots

drill deeper than the black & white
of shaky party platforms.
Down beneath worms
mining resentment & indifference, the bite

of greedy centipedes, the slugs
cold as a winter street
in Minneapolis, whose neat
chewing fattens themselves alone (bugs

do not think about their neighbors).
Whose murmurous gray arms
have framed the milkweed farms
of metaphysical Hope, that anchors

Roger Williams’ canoe –
Love’s almond chariot
that smiling Faith built
out of flocks of can-do

monarch wings, green palms
circumferencing the gray
scallops of yesterday –
twin limestone radials (emblems

of spousal harmony, e pluribus
unum).  Whose tap sinks toward
the center of the gourd,
the hearth Love stokes, wells tears...

& where a voice from her grey mirror
sang in Hobo’s ear –
Behold the Platonic Year
revolve at last, aboard my double-decker

Greyhound!  When the game of suits
& spades & royal clubs
gives way to hearts purple
& ruddy diamondstwin 52s

orbit an orange origami octagon,
one Chinese lantern, standing
in the night gardenbring
Hobo to the table, thenIt’s done!

He pondered pumpkin murmurings,
& mooned there, by the muddy
banks.  The breeze of poetry...
only a feeling (sighed).  Our burdenings

borne by that humble muse, whose trust
in some deep loving cloud
grey Manitou’s abode
will wave back (Noah’s buoyant crust).

the palm, the fiery gates

PRAIRIE ROUNDELAY

American robin on my fence
I sense you are a friend
& neighbor – here to lend
your orange breast, for salience –

swell-sign of aerial fellowship
in gravid cave-adventure
(blue waves of chicory
pacing old roads, from Boston slip

to San Francisco).  How your edgy
yodeling interrogates
our grubby, wormy hates –
sclerotic, squamous tragedy

of shriveled hearts, rancid hypocrisy!
You diagram with song
a madrigal so strong,
so many voices in emergency

merge into blueprint buoyancy –
manifest (garnet clay
prairie roundelay)
a ship-shape evening constancy.

Mute gesture from crow’s-nest G-ray!
Memory, beyond time
salts a Boethian rhyme-
beat... in quella Roma onde

Cristo è Romano.  Staunch ruddy
steersman indicates
the palm, the fiery gates,
Pacific O... – Eternity! is all his study.
