emblems of endurance

EARTH SPIRALS

The words are worn & second-hand
because they came to you
from what came before you.
Peaceful silence of that early land.

Spring meadow, showered with gemstones
glinting in the Joe-Pye weed.
Her breathing warmth, your need
to hold.  Her smile, tickling your bones.

What I wanted to say, could I put it in words
seraphic Maximus might get?
Leaning no-handed on his parapet –
a prisoner (two mourning doves his birds

of paradise, his golden fleece, his dream).
Our tacit sense of truth
sleepwalks, like gentle Ruth
into her waking world.  Like a clear stream

running over red-brown clay, where scattered
agates gleam… moss-rose earth spirals
guide us to Gateway walls –
Itasca springs of earliness.  Of all that mattered.

The throne, the chair of adamant obsidian.
Her maze of Mexican onyx.
Coatlicue’s fire-tempered bricks
of wrath & fortitude… that perihelion

of burning sun, her purifying kiln.
These emblems of endurance
frame a turtleshell dance,
absorbing pain – her sweat-salt will.

Hong Kong dragonfly

FRIDAY AFTERNOON

A Friday afternoon of breeze & clouds.
In Hong Kong, crowds awake
the legacy of Edw. Coke
& Roger Williams’ Providence – shrouds

brace the pinnace, steady keel
to sweep of choppy surf.
Aft the canoe’s curve
a foaming V for victory... for real?

A tiny splinter in the eye, or
Chartres-blue dragonfly
camouflaged by sky.
A Thunderbird (outpacing Minotaur).

Apollinaire, in his bright air-machine
waits on the universal sign
for Joie – like blue-green
pine... like jubilant Mary Magdalen

finding the gardener in cemetery...
like nothing else in Oklahoma.
The principle of hallelujah
is always a little ahead of you, chérie

the way Love leads always, pilgrim, toward
more life (the Way, the Truth).
Out of that cornfield, Ruth;
out of Beforetime plummeted the word –

& so we’re circling around this cave
like a bunch of prehistoric
Australians.  Your biopic
features an almond coracle, O dreaming knave.

O ye porcelain princes

DOVE’S EYE

Arctic air is bearing down now
on this middling Midwestern
flatland plate (limestone).
No sea-breeze moderates the snow

though I remember dockyards of Duluth
in water colors.  Seagulls
recollect their coast
with scraping cries.  Boaz & Ruth

wend for us all – we ramble through
strange parts, returning home;
Kuala Lumpur’s steam-
bath sealed a wedding (one from two).

Love knits together contraries.
This is old wisdom, Sophie;
providential strophe
swung from your native city.  Rhody’s

ambient orchestra – a certain
mildness in the air,
a temperate clarity...
O ye proud porcelain princes, hearken!

Loveless disdain for one another
serves not to patch up
my cracked American cup.
You bicker with your own twin brother.

Stiff little Nutcracker king, your white
hair flows like rain from grey
dove’s eye.  Pluperfect Roy...
a rose ellipse (enfolding day & night).
