a minuscule Mt. Everest

DEEP BREATH

Woke up this mornin’ with m’mind
set on freedom
– & why Cahokia, hm?
Why this iron spring, set to unwind

primeval intuition of first peoples?
Perhaps it’s simple logic –
some high One, past magic;
Wakan Tanka, speeding on wind (eagles

& lightning, shattering the oak).
Faint scent of acacia
anchored in Ogygia.
Sophie Lightfoot, before anyone spoke.

So, in Australian wilderness
& Abrahamic villages –
among Socratic sages
in desert Siberian fastnesses –

with recent atheists, even
– who contradict themselves
if they refuse to delve
into this question… (re the unbroken

unity of truth itself).  The wind
goes rushing thru the room
in a gust of life… boom!
While over on Monk’s Mound

one handful of cruddy clay whorls
into centripetal J
beneath the Milky Way.
A mundus sprinkled with corals

                   *

or small hill – minuscule Mt. Everest
tattooed with a J
for Jonah, Juliet, or Ariadne
signum of Persephone-thesis – quest

to rectify kerygma-proclamation
past this wind of madness
overwhelming Loch Ness
with malicious Minotaur (declares U.N.).

So take a deep breath, cries Roger,
stepping forward, forehead
like a hatchet, hand
held outstretched (some blind codger).

The tyranny of the Man of Sin,
the Man of Lawlessness
seems universal – nonetheless...
like an acorn made of lead, woven

into the ruddy branches of the human-
strung quartet (Beethoven)...
1321132… – how Magdalen
comes running from the limestone

sepulcher!  & how Natasha limped
up to the poet’s temple…
felt knees crumple…
when the continuum of limpid

violins prepared a shroud for Love
& Guillaume wept, also
under the droning falsetto
of Villon’s smoky crossword (O vvv)…

to restore a soul

SECRET WORLD

To restore a soul, to mend a broken heart
out of the wells of memory
for relief of misery
for your grace we pray.  A crane bone flute

keening her lonely call might still redeem
the wind that carries it
on the storm-clouds.  Fiat
lux – though the darkness loom.

This primitive wooden Vierge Ouvrante
unveils her secret world
with a copper hinge.  Old
masters of le Verbe significant

carved, flickered into form
a buoyant microcosm
within her oaken beam –
a human shelter from the storm.

Cicadas buzz amid burnt branches
of a poem framing history.
It is a mystery.
Isis on her throne, Ariadne’s hunches,

spider-Minotaur in his plangent web...
the sacrifice of innocence
behind a screen (some dense
thicket of Pig’s Eye Social Club).

The wind is clear & clean tonight.
Whole homesteads rise
toward ordinary Paradise,
warm lips forging a female Paraclete.

with pigeon feathers for stone walls

SPRING BREEZE

As in one of those primitive
Sienese masters,
a pained St. Francis
fits inside a pastel arch.  Give

me your poor, your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free...
Over there stands Liberty
vaunting her mural crown (tresses

awash beneath W.P.A. murals).
Sister to Columbia,
dove-principezza
with pigeon feathers for stone walls.

They’re tripping a Troy-town maze
around the cave entrance;
priming some freelance
to buzz the Republic’s toxic haze.

Where Everyman is king
no man is king.
To the sheep he’ll cling,
to the underside of everything.

Like the span of a soft retina
in Providence, RI.
Like the women nearby
when they crucified the guy, selah.

Man or woman, brother, sister...
hearken to the wind.
Spring breeze, unwind –
a breath of renaissance, tongue-twister.

hove-to before Frisco

LOAD-BEARING

Strong wind in Minneapolis
today, & slate-gray
clouds (stone solidarity
on high).  Big Wind, my father’s

nickname (Indian Guides).  I picked
West Wind.  Some air
in the ceremony there –
pre-Scouts, & pre-Socratic

too.  How a breeze shoulders a mountain
into laurel blossoms;
how one lilac sums
a people in a spell (for funeral train).

The Word-as-Such... the Word is such
for we who have passed over
Lethe.  It is more
than scent of orange – it is a torch

lit by shaping lips, a summons.
One hectoring nation
circles on its chain
thirsting for liberation... the romance

of Spring on earth.  It is only a turtledove
salience, a gray-feathered
stone from Petersburg;
just a load-bearing mule, hove-

to before Frisco.  & you are called to join
the company of saints –
where Livingstone faints
in swamps of cedar (violet, African).
