wheezing in an iron lung

PATIENT BURRO

Utterly subjective universe
of the poet, Hamlet
dreaming action... what
was I thinking?  A serious nurse

stood by my cradle (Abbott Hospital).
I was four years old,
wheezing in a cold
iron lung.  Paralysis (total).

1956.  Guillain-Barré.
Dr. Pohl – I
don’t remember (sigh).
Osiris in his casket, hey

ey yo.  The photo in the Star-
Tribune – toothy Henry
hugs his scarlet monkey
in a wheelchair.  Recovery! (Bizarre.)

Like the slight son of Giuliana
in a clinic in Ravenna.
Watch her parabola –
purple violet (or cypripedium

reginae) fringes the pottery;
congregate, massive
unguent jar, evocative
lure (hand of Lippo Memmi)

harboring anointment oil.
Milk, sap, honey,
wine, blood...  See
the star-eye riding the sea-roil

                  *

on her prow, lancing the Black Sea!
Magnet of gold foil,
handle for plow-soil –
wave of personae-galaxy!

As if the searching character of Isis
were encapsulated in
this matryoshka-queen.
Vierge Ouvrante (Hagia Sophia’s

magnifying glass, or Henry Church)
sums up significance
of eucharist – each instance
in a suffering kenosis, the human lurch

(from safe beatitude to surf
beat attitude)
leading to passionate
étude (H. Gorecki... – it is enough).

Prow like a beak, eye like star,
the solidarity of Polar
Bear – it is our
birthright, people everywhere!

Metaphysical, incomprehensible
Love, that finds an echo
in the infinitely patient burro
suffering everything.  Your fable

inches toward the human heart
on light footsteps...
so Nora’s rose keeps
Eros innocent (sweet garden violet).

& know the place for the first time

STEEP HEART

The mystery of the Incas, how
they filed those giant stones
at the top of mountains
into close-fitting knots (above, below).

The slim knife-edge, the penetration.
On behalf of balance,
lamb-tethered violence...
one must die, for the sake of the nation.

Something about moss-covered stone,
arctic lichen.  Colors
on a rough-hewn wall (yours,
mine).  Collage of blood & bone.

Memory, mother of muses
lead me back to your
stone milk-splashed door.
Ancient well-bench (sea-roses).

The eunuchs of the kingdom come
& go... their simple habit
underneath the gibbet
simply to repeat the sacred OM.

Alpha, Omega.  History unwinds.
He’s humble, sheepish
as a goat – Ish-
mael, or Solomon.  Pay him no mind.

The one thing that happened, historically
was that an innocent nobody
became king for a day.
Steep heart, remind me... let us pray.

by old Bronze River

PROVIDENCE ROSE

Every day’s a sabbath day
for Hobo in retirement.
He drowses, full content
by old Bronze River (jasper, say –

carnelian, or sard).  On an empty bench
left for Henry once
in Dante’s Providence;
muttering seek ye the good, mensch

avoid evil.  That would be a start.
The natural conscience
inheres in us; hence
dignity of life abides at heart

like some inalienable hearth-fire,
wants but a spark
to swivel toward magnetic
North (up near Itasca, where

scampers el Baby Rio del Espiritu).
That’s his geography –
some Hart-biography
sketched by the circle of a grey-blue

palm (O Thou smoky Hand
of Fire) – lightening the clouds
with limestone pigeon-crowds
& Jonah-spray... playful Leviathan!

O chaste & ancient liberties
free men & women found
promising iris-ground
out of primordial charities

              *

when Pharaoh was scapegoat too
& idols of the king
morph into Arty-thing
or potsherd red-white-blue

jewel-eye... old Noah’s galley
wakening in Galilee,
when ordinary Mary
hums a grass-green prairie

ray.  The light of Providence
shines out of living things
her omnipresence – springs
on breezy air (moist & immense)

into the metamorphoses
of human times, places –
so many steeplechases
in one race!  Four horses

at Clop-Clop Ellipse rounded
the bend by Hobo’s bench –
each iron bit they clench
forged in a molten sun-crowned

whisper-salience.  Providence
Rose crossed over the line
in first.  Bright human-
divine dervish foot-dance –

key pivoter in clay, O starfish
sun-Leviathan –
O luminous Kid of Man
in cloud-basilica (original Ish).

through clouds like whales

SOUL SCOUT
                              i.m. Fr. Jacques Hamel

You breathe a mist over stained glass,
like a cloud over Mirror Lake,
by the trolley road to Blake
(in Mendelssohn).  Rouen, alas.

In Chartres nave, one dark gray
thread still navigates
J-whorl, on golden agate –
Ariadne’s Way (sealed crypt to Day).

Her catenary smile will make
a lazy loop through Space
in Time; her carapace
a turtleshell – sweet curve you take

through clouds like whales, Jonah –
to find an old mercy-go-
round anew.  Like Jessie O.
on racy waterwheeler, sunray-

rain-bowed – Lady Liberty
an echo of Cahokia,
a salience of Royal Oak
(lips’ kayak lifting word to be).

Deep breath, Path P, Rhodos.
Out of a barbed-wire
cat’s-cradle (rust pyre
of Minotaur-empire) you rose –

winded with old George, the breadwinner,
& Maggie, of the veritas
caput – where Brandywine flows
into 4 Pine River (soul scout’s honor).

A Word to Readers

A bout of illness sometimes offers opportunity to steer necessary change of course.  I've been laid up for a week or so, & through the fog of discombobulations began to see things slightly anew, or anyway askew.

For long I've had a reasonable rationale for putting a lot of poetry, & ponderoskings about poetry, here on the blog.  I won't rehearse the wherefore all that? right now.  It would require a book-length tapeworm to unwind all real & supposed motivations & feelings about my own sitch in the American poetry landscape (FYI, see prev. 8-zillion pp. of HG Poetics).  In any case, I shall retain all that for the Paris Review interview and the New Yorker profile, both of which are looming on the event horizon, no later than 3026 I am told.

But this week I came to the conclusion that there is no alternative for the American poet, no back door or sideway entrance, whether by street minstrelsy or digital rhizome-megaphonics.  There is a longstanding marble-columnar Establishment building (made up of many buildings) which houses American poetry; it is maintained and sustained by a combination of internal memos and laying on of hands; it is not evil, corrupt or malicious - it simply is what it is, the Establishment.  And there is no route for the American poet other than the most direct : that is, to face that central verbal Building-Complex, and direct one's work directly toward It, and await Its response.  As the old Sunday School song maintains : You can't go over it, you can't go under it, you can't get around it - you've to to go in through the door.

Why would any poet (other than yours truly, Don K. Hotey) imagine things this way, doing things this way?  The only valid reason would be Unity.  That is, if & that there really exists a kind of unity - a unity of the human imagination, a unity of the art of poetry, a unity to the sense of beauty or rightness.   If all our individual strivings under the heading of this art actually nestle under the aegis of some shady, comprehensive unity - then we ought to be forthright in our efforts to sling our work toward the general public, the established organs, the leading Judges of this particular field of endeavor.

I can hear the uproar and the cynical chortling.  Is the Great Refuser suddenly become the Great Kow-Tower?  Is the snarky Rebel now turned toddling Toady?

My answer to that is : I'm not suggesting uncritical obeisance to the standing Arbiters of Taste.  One makes and expresses one's own taste.  Nor am I suggesting the aspiring noodlehead abandon his or her fellow struggling little-magazinites (sounds like a microbe) and aim only for the Big Screen.  I speak only for myself.  I myself need to throw my toys toward the editorial Bull's-eye at the center of the Island of Reception [note arrowed metaphors], and work harder, and take my chances.

So I decided, during my bedridden week, to lay off publishing my poems immediately to blog.  I'm sorry to bid this partial adieu to you dear trusty comrades & faithful friends (this means you, Olive Oyl).  & for anybody who just can't get enough of these mesmerizing, stupefying masterworks, I do think there are actually a substantial Matterhunk of my poems present on record, for perusal & re-reading.  Hopefully they will remain live here for a good while to come.

Hopefully I won't change my mind on this until tomorrow, at least.  In the meantime, here's one more "occasional".   In future I will most likely be posting other kinds of messages - not going away.  Hi-Ho, Silver!  [waves cowboy hat, rides mule toward Chanhassen]

EVENING ROSE

Day after Father’s Day – at cusp
of springing summertime.
Anxious children climb
steep query-spirals – must the Ship

break into toothpicks, battered by
cold 40-ft slaps (off
the Tongue)?  Mozartean buff
Fathersare they foundering& why?

Some stately turkeys ornament
our neighborhood.  Their very
carriage molts each scary
Bronze Age snood toward merriment,

that used-caruncle dewlap glare
to bustle of 18th-century
quadrille heroine (stray
boa-feather in Ben Franklin’s hair).

Down its ravine, the river-myth
is inexhaustible, still
spills, inscrutable (al-
most), its copperhead glide.  With

wattle-basket coracle, Huck Frisbee
heels for civilization.
Skinny levitation,
Aesculapland shaman... – Hey,

there’s Beatrice!  Pacing slowly,
lifted above herself,
a white heron (sylph-
crane) sure-footed, shadowing me –

long-legged flier in the reeds,
like feathered snow come
from gray clouds.... amalgam
sweetheart-griffin-seraph-steed.

She says: your frigate’s scraping shallows,
that is allThe ring
of Ocean overhead (sing,
choirs of pilots!) is harmonious;

your houseboat made of Lincoln logs
is under beanpole Abe’s
Euclidean bien sabe.
His moral compass counters rogue

waves, waves of dead shark-plugs
with a fertile proposition,
proven (fractal fashion)
through o’erlapping pliesPersian rugs,

matryoshka dolls... onion peals
from domes of ever-deeper
& dove-subtle cheer...
‘til liberty for all becomes the seal

of human Union (universal,
irreversible
malice invisible,
o’erwhelmed by charity for all).

Doubloons of humanism shine,
winking in mud-banks
near St. Lou.  So prinks
the Rio’s evening Rose (yours, mine).

the Ariadne pattern

INGLE EYE

A wild white rose at the side of the house
bloomed just today
like the city of Dioce
on green clover stairway   Spouse

Sister   in clusters of stars
Who are you?   Magdala
Stone   mosaic   of gala
winefest   little swirl of squares

corn-maze   around an ingle eye
your single sigh
the keystone   by-&-by
(little fiddlehead fern   turning pern-

kernel   the axle of the ax)
as Icarus   burning wax
falls   cataracts
into Grotto J   (relax)

on Chartres nave-pavement   discern
the Ariadne pattern
that angry monks   learn
magnanimity   & turn

again   as falcons gyre   into
the sun   (mild   smile
on earth   mile upon mile)
the Son of Man   is fashioned true

whisper those lips   of windblown rue
Jessie Ophelia   your
leaves of grace   empowered
to plow   deep rose   to emerald blue

Scent of an ending

Summer fading, a For Sale sign on the house... getting ready to leave Little Rhody.  Yet still remains one rose out back, a very bright one.

PETAL-FAN

September.  One late crimson backyard
rose remains.  Knot
not exactly Ruby, not
Desire – but Steadfast Fire (framed

by maroon foundation of the house).
Afloat upon your thorns,
a crozier, or serpent’s
copperhead – magenta compass,

planetary pole.  Away beyond
all foregone Oregon
disputes – those Diomedan
straits of Fenris-Greyhound –

54º32-by-Four!  Ringing
the International Date
Line – must I hesitate?
Princess in a shower, singing.

We clambered to the clear high room
where SF in a bay flamed
orange bloom – became
entangled like a quipu sum (loom,

cedars).  Weight of one iron anchor
filled that octagon
with spray of azure ocean
when Evening Star fired his tangential

thread of light into shade-womb
of piers – that San Franciscan
adamant, where limestone
Rhodi petal-fan (leaf-shaken hum).
